Overall pretty pleased with this book. As a newbie gardener I was a little nervous that this would be advanced, but I am glad that the content was appropriate for a newbie like me. Overall pretty simple. I really appreciated the step by step approach!

Good basic advice but virtually no images of any kind and rather dry. Also, the tips about container gardening didn’t include safety information like avoiding containers that will leech toxins into your food. Recommended tires and cinder blocks for instance, both of which contain loads of harmful chemicals. In general it’s good beginner gardening advice but I would have preferred photos and more information on organic and sustainable homesteading.

This was a good introduction to gardening. The information was laid out in a methodical way and was easy to read. The homesteading part seemed more of a second thought in the book though. Maybe I was looking for different information than what was provided. Since it's titled and marketed for those interested in homestead gardening, a lot of time and focus was spent on backyard gardening information. I really wanted to see what was needed to move to the next level and I don't think this book touched enough on this, esp the big issue of the harvest timing and preservation of your garden, and how to make the work load manageable etc. If you've already read a decent gardening book, you probably won't need this one. If your a new gardener or have had lots of issues in your garden over the years, this back to basics book may help. Overall, a good beginners gardening book. *I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and this is my voluntary and honest review.

The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Homestead Gardening was filled with great information and techniques for beginning the process of adapting your home/property into a homestead. There was a lot of focus on vegetable gardening. If you’ve got an interest in homesteading this is a great guide to help you take the very first baby-steps down that pathway!

This is an impactful and important read for anyone wishing to pursue homesteading/ homestead gardening. My husband is now reading it (we share a kindle) because I kept sharing tidbits and he got annoyed and said “I want all of the info” great book!

Homestead Gardening by Mila R S is a helpful addition to any library. With so much gardening advice available, this is a most useful simplified, step-by-step guide to establishing a sustainable homestead garden. It begins with an explanation of homestead gardening and its usage in whatever accommodation you inhabit. With twenty chapters, this book covers various topics such as vegetable gardening, soil preparation, seeds, watering, fertilisers, weeding, harvesting, storing and most, crucially rotating crops for a self-sufficient year-round garden. It provides various advice from using different containers, planting layouts, tools, companion planting and even the easiest vegetables to grow. A clearly presented gardening source, with its colourful diagrams and tables of simple presentation, makes it a must have, four and a half star rating. With thanks to BooksGoSocial and the author, for an uncorrected advanced reader copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own and freely given.

The author begins by stating that you can grow a garden anywhere, whether it's a suburban garden or a city rooftop. You need to do some research on what types of plants are grown in your area, what kind of soil you have and if your plot has a lot of shade or sun. You also need to see what plants complement each other and which plants may crowd each other or take each others nutrients or spread disease.
Vermiculite ( a mineral that retains moisture), peat moss and compost are the three most basic components that your soil needs.
Zucchini and summer squash grow prolifically and are easy to plant, as are leafy greens and lettuce. You will need to research what plants grow in your area and how you can irrigate and water them effectively, a timer is suggested if you are only home in the evening or you have a busy schedule.
By using mulch, you will retain water by keeping it from evaporating, and you can use hay, grass clippings and leaves to make free mulch.
You will also need to set up a schedule to weed your garden to keep the plants healthy and give them space to grow.
You should keep a record of which plants thrive in your garden, which plants do poorly and what you have done to encourage their growth to know what you can plant every year.
You are taught how to prepare your ground for planting by clearing away rocks, unwanted trees, bushes and grass so that your area is ready for planting.
So learn how to set up a garden by deciding how big it should be, what kinds of plants grow in your area and how to plan your crops every year by reading this book.

This book is a great beginner's gardening book. I enjoyed reading it and was pleased to find a few gardening nuggets of wisdom that I'd never run across in my years as a gardener. I recommend this to anyone interested in starting a garden. My only critique is that the homesteading angle is a bit overdone.

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to trying my hand at gardening again. I’ve never had luck here in my backyard, but this book addresses some of the problems I had and even gives me alternative ways to get my greens growing again.

A great resource for the newer gardener.

The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Homestead Gardening is an interesting monograph on planning and beginning gardening to lessen readers' carbon footprint and improve food security and self sufficiency. Due out 11th July 2022, it's 117 pages and the review materials provided for review included no retail/acquisition information or author links.

This is a very simply written and accessible guide to planning and getting started with gardening. The information included in the book is very general and widely available online, but the author (the publicity info received for review does not specify or give author name or credits and there's no Library of Congress info available) does a good job of collating the information in one manual. There are no annotations provided and the book (in the ARC supplied for review) doesn't include an index or bibliography.

The chapters are arranged thematically, starting with basic concepts (where, how, what, when, why), small space gardening, beginning vegetable gardening, layouts (there are no plans given here), tools, easiest vegetables to grow, companion gardening, soil prep, seaonality, seed sowing and propagation, watering, weeding, fertilizing, harvesting, storage, crop rotation, some pitfalls to avoid, general self-sufficiency, and making money from your "homestead hustle".

This is a guide for dreamers and people who are trying to get started with planning. There is no real concrete information contained in this book which cannot be found easily online elsewhere. Graphically it's a very simple layout, devoid of photos or illustrations. There are no graphics in the ARC at all.

Three stars. It might make an appropriate support text alongside other more traditional guides, but as a solo work, it doesn't go into enough detail on any of the subjects to be a sufficient resource on its own.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I received this as an ARC, but the opinions are honest and my own. This was a great introduction to homesteading and vegetable gardening in particular. It lays the foundation of all the information you need to get started and tells you where and when you will need to research for your specific region and needs. It is not a deep dive, but will get someone new to the concept of gardening started.

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is an interesting guide, but is very high level.

The guide talks about deciding how to use your space, what plants to grow, how to take care of your plants, and more tips on homesteading. While there's some specific information throughout the book like what plants grow together well and how to have a container garden, but other information is just 'see what works for your area'. It's helpful as a checklist of things to think about when considering homesteading.

The simplicity of this book is its finest point! It starts at the very beginning by examining your property, and then progresses to tools you need, ways to plant, companion gardening, and common mistakes. The book is very easy to read and follow. It will lead you step-by-step from inspiration to results. It is one of the most inclusive guides and is a must read before you start your gardening endeavors!

This is an in-depth beginners guide to gardening. It’s great about mentioning the smaller details that are often missed by similar books. I love that there was comprehensive information about companion planting and soil health!
