An interesting combination of elements here. We're talking, of course, about institutional racism, especially surrounding hair, and gentrification. But there's more complexity here than we typically see in middle grade fiction. It allows for gray areas and compromises. Worthy of discussion.

This middle grade is great in that it is interesting and will hold the attention of readers, while also covering issues that will matter to readers in this age group. It is well written and features a strong female lead, who is becoming independent and coming into her own. There was not a lot of loose ends to wrap up, so the ending of the book was quite quick, but that is often a positive thing, especially for readers in this age group. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book!

Another great BIPOC story to add to the list. And what a head of hair Lotus has? Wow! Plus her violin. A good story of community, schools, and speaking out.

Disclaimer: I received an eBook copy of this book to review by the publisher in exchange for a review. This has not impacted my review.
Lotus is such an individual and strong character to have in a book. I really enjoyed her individual style, that she seemed to put so much effort into. Lotus Bloom is a fantastically diverse book, that has a great emphasis on family, friendship, and sticking up for what you believe in.

I was attracted to the book due to its absolutely fabulous cover. The story was cute and eye-opening. As a white woman, I honestly had no idea of the extent of dress coding girls due to hair styles. For that reason alon,e, I will be purchasing this for my middle school library whose population is mostly white and South Asian.

I was so excited to see that I was approved to review this book! The title and the cover are awesome. The concept excited me as well. However, my biggest issue is that I could tell this was written by an adult. When you’re writing from the perspective of a child, it should sound like a child. It completely took me out of the reading experience and sort of killed my excitement.
