This book kept me on the edge of my seat. I can so see this becoming a blockbuster movie and a cult classic. Tula is a painter and psychic, Casey is a cop seeking to solve and prevent more murders. I wish this was a series, I could read more about these two but will settle for books by the author.

Tula Crane is an artist, but she’s not like other artists… She’s a psychic artist. She gets visions of women who are about to be murdered and she paints their faces while in an unconscious state. Sometimes she is able to find the women and stop the murders before they happen, she stopped two killers when she was younger. She moved away from her abusive parents the moment she turned 18 and she has never looked back except in fear of her abusive parents that she’s afraid will find her and bring her back home so they can force her to paint against her will. She has started over again in Moses Lake, it’s quiet and she has stopped painting, until the murders start up again and she paints the first victim. She feels like the only right thing to do is show her painting to the local police department so hopefully they can put a stop to this new serial killer.

That’s where Casey Wilson comes in, she is a detective with the Moses Lake Police Department. On the rise in the force, she takes her job very seriously as she has to, being the only woman detective at the Moses Lake PD. She finds out about Tula’s abilities and is sceptical at first until Tula proves herself.

Tula has other help besides her amazing psychic ability. She has otherworldly help from a longtime friend, Angel and Angel’s guide, Blue. Angel watches after Tula, helping her in any way she can. Angel has her own demons to battle in order to get to the next stage of her existence.

Can Tula, Casey, and Angel all work together to stop this heinous and villainous killer and bring them to justice?

I enjoyed reading this book, I just wish there had been something unpredictable in the plot. I like when stories surprise me and unfortunately this one didn’t do it for me. I was, however, intrigued with the story writing and even though the story was predictable I was still captivated by the story. I really liked the LGBTQ+ relationship in this book, they were really beautiful and amazing together! I also really enjoyed the paranormal aspects of this book. I wish I had even some of the amazingly awesome abilities that Tula had, just without the whole head injury part. This is a very entertaining read, I just wish there was a surprise or two hidden in the plot. Still, it was an overall interesting read and I’m glad I got to read it. Thank you to NetGalley and Sheri Lewis Wohl for the opportunity to read this!

First time reading a paranormal book and it was ok for me. I may not be a big fan of the genre but it did all right keeping my attention. Mostly because I liked the two main characters. The mystery part was less fleshed out as I had hoped and the romance was a very tiny part of this book which was a bit disappointing to me.

An ARC was provided to me in return of an honest review.

I didn't get a chance to finish this book before it was archived. I stopped about 35 pages in due to some health issues. Anyway, from what I've read so far this is the exact kind of book I love. I'm going to go ahead and rate it 4 stars because I already expect it to be one of my favorites. Can't wait for the end of the year to read it (getting it as a holiday present from a friend)

This murder mystery with a paranormal aspect is well written, readable and an enjoyable diversion. I liked the main characters and thought the grandmother should have a book of her own. I love side characters who seem like fully rounded people and I found the grandmother like that. The killer isn’t hidden that well but the story still has enough angst to have you turning pages.

The second plot line with Angel had me guessing more than the murder mystery. It was clear Angel had done something that caused her to question everything but we don’t get the answer till the end - and I didn’t guess that one.

Good elements of storytelling and the pacing was right for me as I raced and slowed down through the plot. I accepted that Tula could paint faces after a TBI as if it was just an everyday thing and that’s skilful writing. I’ll continue to pick up books by this author.

I do not typically read paranormal, however, I have read previous works by this author. I seem to be okay with "light" paranormal. In my opinion, this read fits. The detective, Casey Wilson is skeptical of the artist, Tula Crane painting faces of murdered women. The dynamics between the two women is interesting as they get to know each other. The two Angels in the story had a larger role than necessary in my opinion.

First I would like the publisher to know that they need to rework the synopsis. No where does it say this book includes a paranormal theme. I am not a fan of paranormal stories, thus I am not a fan of this story. I thought I would be reading a murder mystery...a thriller. Oh there was so much more. There is an artist that paints the face of women that are potential murder victims, a psychic grandmother, abusive parents and angels with a past.
The writing is fine and the dialog is good. But the characters are all a bit over the top. The Angels and their back stories felt like it was thrown in to beef up the story. It wasn't necessary at all. All the story lines were totally predictable. You will know who the killer is right away. And there is a tiny romance.
All you paranormal fans out there might just love this fantasy but not so much for me.

If I’m looking to read something with a paranormal twist infused with mystery, intrigue, and romance, Sheri Lewis Wohl is one of my go-to authors. Her newest novel, The Artist, has all of the things I look for in this type of story.

The main character, Tula Crane is in hiding, and has been for twenty years. She was a child prodigy, but ran from that life when she was in her teens. She used to be a famous painter, but now that talent has taken a horrifying turn. She is painting the faces of women who are being murdered. This brings her into the sights of Detective Casey Wilson who is tasked with her partner in solving the murders. Casey doesn’t believe in Tula’s talent, but ends up working with Tula as the killings continue.

There is quite a lot of hidden angst from Tula’s past as well as from some of the secondary figures. The mystery in the tale is not so much a “whodunit”. I figured out who the killer was almost as soon as they were introduced. It was more of a if, when, and how they would be caught, and how many would die before that happened. There is a secondary couple in the book that I became really interested in, as well as Tula and Casey. Angel and her companion Blue keep popping up in the story, and we only get glimpses of who they are and why they are in the tale. Those peeks really intrigued me, and they do add up so that we eventually know their story as well. The killer is well described…so well, in fact, that I truly hope I never meet someone like that. Just the thought sends shivers down my spine.

The author almost always uses the Pacific Northwest as the settings of her novels, and this book is no different. The descriptions of Moses Lake are well done and create a beautiful background to a rather dark but thrilling novel.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is a good story to escape with when you want a few shivers and paranormal action mixed with your murder mystery and romance.

Good paranormal romance. I loved the mystery, murder and paranormal mix in this story. Tula and Casey were such great characters for this story. I loved that the author had a bit of witch craft thrown in to make it even more interesting. Tula and Casey's relationship was really compelling and sweet, and their families were pretty interesting as well. One family was the family from hell and the other family was very supportive and nurturing. I really can't say much more about this book, because then I would be giving spoilers, just know that I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and family and I look forward to what's next from this author.

Thank you Netgalley and Bold Strokes for a copy of the ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Firstly, I chose this book because it had three things I love. Lesbians, Murder Mystery and Paranormal content.

I really enjoyed this book, but it was hard to get into at first. There were bits in it that didn't make sense, like the ex-girlfriend (what was the point?) and the third POV. It wasn't until maybe 50% into it that it started to make more sense. I was kind of put out that I figured out who the murderer was, like pretty much straight away, and the romance was a really really slow burn, so it was a bit disappointing.

But even that said, I did enjoy it, and I liked the paranormal content. I liked the connection between Tula and Casey. It was easy to read and follow.

Sentences into this paranormal mystery I was immediately drawn into the world of Tula Crane. Once a child painting prodigy, she has taken her finely tuned artistic gift into a different direction. She has the ability to paint the faces of women who will meet their fate at the hands of a serial killer.
At the Moses Lake Police Department, Detective Casey Wilson is involved in the solving a murder and is skeptical on working with an artist of all things to aide in her investigation. As the number of murders increase and someone Wilson knows is a victim, she will cast aside her doubts and will slowly believe in Tulsa’s psychic abilities as they forge together to find the killer.
Filled with intrigue, suspense and twists this is an entertaining read.

Lewis Wohl’s characters are well written and I very much appreciated the 2SLGBTQIA+ rep. It’s just that I didn’t jive with the style of writing. I DNF'd at about 30%.

2.75 stars. This is the first book I read by Wohl and I was looking forward to it as Wohl is known for books in the paranormal genre, which I like a lot. This book also falls in this genre as it is a paranormal mystery, but unfortunately I was disappointed with it. I hate to give a bad review, but I struggled with this book, put it down several times and had to make myself finish it. I’m hoping I just picked a bad book to get introduced to this author’s writing, so I’m willing to give another book a try in the future.

Casey is a detective working on (what she doesn’t know at first) a serial killer case. Tula is an artist who has a paranormal gift that allows her to paints the victims of the serial killer and together they start the hunt for a serial killer. I have to say that the blurb is somewhat misleading as Tula really does not want to get involved in the crime investigation, as the blurb suggests, but she gets involved anyhow.

My main issues with this book were that it was extremely chaotic and that none of the storylines caught my interest. At the start of the book you’re introduced to several characters and you sort of fall in the middle of the story without introduction. I tend to like this approach, slowly figuring out what’s going on, but here it didn’t work for me. Two characters were especially hard to understand, their own small storyline was intertwined with the bigger storyline, but I didn’t think it added much to the story even when I knew their full story. Add to that that one of them was constantly crying and I got very annoyed after a while.

Then there was the crime story and I was hoping for a good crime investigation, but that never happened as the story relied on the paranormal gifts of one of the main characters. Her abusive background and paranormal gift are rehashed over and over and because of that the mystery never really took off. The killer was also not a big surprise, and it was all a bit predictable near the end.

I don’t need a romance when it’s a mystery or paranormal storyline, but for those interested in the romance storyline, it’s there but it’s very small and fast, and I missed some chemistry. I didn’t mind too much as this is not the main storyline.

Clearly this was not the right book for me and I can’t recommend it. I suggest to read some other reviews if you’re interested in reading this.

There are a few subplots, but I believe the main plot is Tula Crane and her ability to drawn vividly. The story is solid, even though I don't enjoy double POV, I was still able to focus well enough in every POV and it was a really good journey.

I am really glad for that scene when Tula showed Casey what she could do. Even I as a reader, I felt the need for it. I feel like instead of Blue and Angel, there should have been more of Matthew, because yes, Angel was doing whatever it is she was doing and her story is truly sad or POETIC, but Matthew was more. Esp when Tula elaborated on how he helped her. Truthfully, I really feel like Angel's protection ability was overestimated. But my god, did my heart break for her when the truth about Blue's identity was revealed. Now, that reveal was more intriguing than the killer's reveal. I had a feeling about Blue esp when Angel screamed, "No." But I wasn't sure, and damn. Though, Angel protecting Tula would have made more sense and been more in-connect with the story if Angel had any ancestral relations with Tula.

I love how Casey and Tula connected so easily. Hopefully, they lived happy ever after. Casey's ex was a real wacko. And Diane, that crazy woman. Don't even get me started on Dante.

This was a very interesting read. I just wish it was slightly longer. The characters were both very like-able but I felt like perhaps a bit underdeveloped. I loved the chemistry between the two as well.

This is a story about child prodigy artist Tula Crane who suffered a traumatic brain injury as a teenager and afterwards she starts seeing visions of women who are being murdered by a serial killer. She paints these women and then helps the police find the killer. Detective Casey Wilson is assigned to the serial killer case and tracks down Tula. At first Casey is very skeptical about Tulsa’s psychic abilities as the killer continues his killing spree Casey begins to believe in the paranormal.

This was my first book by Wohl and I was reluctant to read it. I don’t think the blurb accurately described the storyline. I really got into this book at about the 40% mark by just going with the paranormal and immersing my self it the possibility of the afterlife. There is a secondary story in the background with Angel and Blue. Angel was fairly needy, repetitive and annoying but if I had experienced her life I might be the same.

The mystery of who the killer is was not much of a mystery and pretty predictable. The final resolution was nice and tied up all the loose ends.

This was a very slow burn romance, The paranormal storyline took up most of the book.

Arc received for an honest and voluntary review.

Ms Wohl’s novel The Artist brings you into the world of a painting prodigy, Tula Crane. Tula has the uncanny ability to paint the faces of women who will be murdered. Her special gift has been dormant for years until murdered women start turning up in her small town.

Detective Casey Wilson is one of the investigators trying to solve these murders. Meeting Tula has Casey reaching deep into her psyche and belief system to understand Tula’s physic powers.

A parallel story revolves around Angel and Blue who try to protect Tula without her knowledge. Throughout the novel the two act as a pseudo Greek chorus giving their opinions on what is occurring. This is where I have problems with the novel. Angel has done something horrific in her past and plays the victim card all through the story. Her moaning and whining became too much for me and I found myself skipping over most of her dialogue.

Another issue is the transparency of the mystery killer. There are no false leads or alternative suspects to be considered to add a deeper sense of mystery to the story. The main plot requires some beefing up to enhance the “mystery “. The subplot needs to be condensed and not act as a page filler.

Although this novel was not for me, others have found it quite enjoyable.

I received an advance review copy from Bold Strokes Books and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was my first time reading Sheri Lewis Wohl. Usually, psychic and supernatural themes are not my piece of cake, but I liked the blurb as it had a woman detective and decided to give it a shot. I liked "The Artist" and it got my attention, but it is heavier than what I had anticipated regarding the paranormal storyline. It was only after the reading that I saw that the author writes vampires, werewolves, and ghosts, so it might not be for everybody. Also, it deals with child abuse (not sexual), just leaving the heads up in case it is a trigger for somebody.
The book has two storylines and there is not really a mystery, but it did not bother me. However, I need to point out (trying not to give a spoiler) that I think there is a loose thread by the end. The killer threats one of the MCs and affirms to have power over someone important to the MC, and then nothing is said about that any more... I did not have time to go back to the book to check on it, but I think it has a problem there and it should have been solved before it was published.
