Hidden Pieces by Mary Kelikoa was a great mystery that kept you guessing what was going to happen and then completely surprises you in the end.
This story follows Jax as he investigates a crime in his area. This crime brings up the past for him and leads him to investigate not one but two crimes. As Jax investigates he will learn that not everything is how he sees it and not everyone is how he views them.
The story is a fasted paced read that you want to inhale because it leaves you at the edge of your seat. Would highly recommend this book to anyone that loves thrillers which surprising twists.

Hidden Pieces by Mary Keliikoa is the first book in the Misty Pine Mystery series.

I love crime thrillers! Jax Turner is the sheriff in Misty Pines.
Jax feels like he has little to live for. He lost his wife, daughter and possibly his job.
He is distraught and on the brink of suicide.

As a new case comes up about a missing girl, Allison, he starts investigating and finds he is getting his purpose back.

I could not put this book down. I love crime thrillers, and this one was EXCEPTIONAL with a very unique premise. The twists and turns were so good .

The ending was very unexpected.

I look forward to more books in this series and spending more time with Jax.

Trigger warnings: mental health & cancer

a strange and confusing book that grabbed me and then lost me near the end.....

a young girl is abducted at her bus stop
the sherriff jax turner is at the end of his tether and about to eat his gun

but its when the girls missing backpack turning up in a sex offenders car that really starts the ball rolling and brings turner back on track to find her

but why does this abduction remind turner of another abduction that happened years ago that had devastating consequences for all those involved....

i had more or less guessed who the perp was but the twists and turns made it very confusing and maybe didnt need it....

Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book. It was good, but I struggled to get through. It was a little bit too slow-paced for me.

I received a digital advance copy of Hidden Pieces by Mary Keliikoa via NetGalley. Hidden Pieces is scheduled for release on October 25, 2022.

Hidden Pieces follows Sheriff Jax Turner, a man who has recently lost his daughter and wife. He finds himself facing a vanished schoolgirl, her backpack found in the backseat of a man with a questionable past, and mysterious potential connections to the death of the girl’s aunt 25 years ago. Jax is on a mission to find the missing girl and pick up the pieces of his own shattered life.

The mystery at the heart of the story is its strength. Keliikoa has created a tale with enough complications and mystery to keep the reader asking questions throughout. While there were a couple of spots where I questioned the logic of specific plot points, overall it was a solid and satisfying mystery.

I did have some difficulty with the characters in the novel. The first half of the story introduces a relatively large cast, and I had trouble sorting them out and keeping track of the connections. As I moved into the second half of the book, this created some issues for me in understanding the clues and what they really meant for the story. By the end, I did have a sense of who Jax was, the pieces of his past that haunted him, and some questions about his future. As this is the first novel of a planned series, it does work as an introduction to a detective series.

Overall, Hidden Pieces delivered a satisfying, but somewhat bumpy, mystery. I would continue reading to find out what happens with Jax next.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Level Best Books for an advance copy of Hidden Pieces, the first novel to feature the Sheriff of Misty Pines, Oregon, Jax Turner.

14 year old Allison Krueger doesn’t get on the school bus. Jax is contemplating suicide through his never ending grief over the natural death of his daughter five years previously, but decides to take one last case and find Allison. His investigation is difficult as he eyes up a local sex offender, finds links to a twenty five year old case he never solved and finds more links to it in Allison’s family.

Hidden Pieces was a mixed bag for me. I love the detail and grind of police procedurals and this is a great example of the try any route to success type as he flounders initially in his investigation, latching on to any hint of a clue. I was less enthusiastic about the alternating narrative as the alternative is Allison’s former stepmother, Elena’s hunt for her missing brother.

I found the police investigation to be absorbing and liked the way it unfolded, although it is quite dreary with Jax constantly mentioning his dead daughter and never anything less than weighed down. I found it wearing and quite depressing to be a constant guest in his grief. Elena had a trauma in her youth, so finding her brother, Steven, is important to her, but it’s all a bit haphazard and panicky, especially in the first half.

I liked the misdirection in the novel and the way leads don’t pan out, but was underwhelmed by the solution. I had an inkling of the perpetrator’s identity mainly because it’s not a new idea and I could spot the clues, but it’s still one I don’t find credible.

I liked enough of Hidden Pieces to rate it at 4*.

Whoa!!!! Just what I needed to finally end this damn reading slump!!!!! This book is good!!!!! So damn good!!!! Since chapter one I was hooked!!! I couldn't stop reading, and I was thinking about it when I wasn't able to read it. It has so many twists and thw author goes around dropping information and hiding leads and there you are thinking oohhh I know what's going on hahaa but nah you didn't 😅 your brain was tricked!!!!! You got punkd!!!! I was all the time like damn ll this drama and the more I read the more I didn't know what was happening hahahaha. I loved this book so so much and I highly recommend it !!!!

It has no explicit ANYTHING, and that's also something I needed to refresh my brain. No explicit kidnapping, no steam at all, no explicit murders, nothing!!!! And even being so light it super intriguing and keeps you wondering about everything!!! Every single piece of information on every chapter are a key for something else and I just enjoyed it so so much!!!!

The writing, the characters, the plot, the twists, the development of the entire story, the mystery, everything... I have nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING bad to say about this book!!!!! Well yes, there's one bad thing!!!! WHY IM NOT SEEING IT EVERYWHERE!!!!!

This is the first book that I've read by Ms. Keliikoa and I was pleasantly surprised. She has the most interesting writing style as she keeps things in suspense, gives clues that are not leading to the final answer too soon, and gives lots of detail but does not make the story boring. Hidden Pieces has a very good plot, with a lot of angst and anger, deceit, and compulsion from the main character to find the truth. The ending, at least for me, was unexpected. If you are the sort of reader that enjoys a good suspense thriller, this book is a must-read!
I thank Ms. Keliikoa, her publisher, and NetGalley for this book and these are my honest thoughts.

Thank you Netgalley for approving me to read this wonderful novel. The characters were so rich, and full of life. The author builds the characters up in this novel that makes us as the reader fully care deeply for the MC and the cast of characters. Another thing this novel does is immerse us in the setting. All in all a well written novel and one that all should read.

A really good fast paced terrifying thriller with great characters. Once I started reading I could not put this book down. Devoured in one sitting and I was fully immersed in the story that was unfolding. Full of red herrings, packed to the rafters with tension and suspense and with an ending I never saw coming. I loved it!!!!
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.

If you are looking for a mysterious read, check out Hidden Pieces by Mary Keliikoa. When a teenage girl goes missing in a small coastal town, the local sheriff is thrust into a twisted case that mirrors a cold case that has plagued him since he was a young cop in Portland.

This story had a good mystery vibe and I definitely kept guessing about who had Allison until the end. The end wrapped up a little quick for me with what was going on, but I enjoyed the story. If you’re looking for a good suspense/mystery book, I would check this one out!

3.8 stars?
This is a tough one to review. I liked the small town rural setting, and it was a total surprise ending. There sure were a lot of divorces and anguish and depressing situations. It was sometimes frustrating when I knew something that the sheriff didn't see.
The story was compelling so I kept with it to the end. It's good enough that i would read the next book. I have a feeling they'll get better.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC!

I will leave a review on Amazon and B&N on Oct 25th.

Hidden Pieces is the first book in the Misty Pines Mystery series by Mary Kiliikoa. This was a new author for me, and overall I enjoyed the book. We start as the Sheriff of the small town complates sucide, but that quickly changes as he searches for a missing 14 year old girl. The storyline intermingles a case from the past with the present day case. I did find the culprit the book filled with twists and turns that kept you guessing the outcome. I would recommend it to others.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher Level Best Books, in exchange for my honest review.

Sheriff Jax Turner is pulled from the verge of suicide by the report of a missing teenager. Layers of rot emerge as the search tears up the idyllic small town. Memories of a similar failed search push Jax to his utter limits. New information and clues keep changing the focus of the search and the suspects as the story races along at 100 mph. I could not put this book down!

I hadn’t read any of Mary Keliikoa’s books, so I didn’t know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised.

Sheriff Jax Turner is a mess, still grieving for his daughter who died of cancer. He has been ineffective in his role as sheriff for several years until Allison goes missing. She’s a 14-year-old, and suddenly he sees a way to redeem himself for a case he and his partner failed on years ago.

There are a lot of twists and many flawed characters (beyond the flaws of “normal” people), and I had to stay up last night to finish reading it. This is a real page turner! There are, however, some plot holes that can be difficult to just ignore.

I enjoyed Hidden Pieces despite the plot holes. How could I not when I couldn’t put the book down? And the author has a good writing style that’s easy to follow. I’ll be watching for the next Misty Pines

Jax is suffering and on the edge until that one call comes in that he just can’t ignore; a child is missing. As clues start coming in it starts to take an ominous twist to an unsolved case Jax had worked on many years ago. As he puts the puzzle together more and more of the same pieces are falling into place as they did from the earlier case. But does Jax have what it takes to find the girl safe, bring her home and catch the bad guy?
This book was so good, so much action and even the suspense and twists kept me reading way late past my bedtime I needed to know who it was that did all of this. The characters and setting are perfect. It was such a good book I can’t wait to read more.

What an expected ending that was! While ai had an inkling in part of it, the rest shocked me. I love a good police procedural and look forward to reading more from this author.. it was fast and easy read, that will keep you guessing.

Misty Pine Sheriff, Jax Turner, is about to take his own life when a call comes through about a missing 14 year old girl, Allison. He literally had the gun in his mouth. He quickly turns it around and heads back to town to find Allison. It soon becomes clear that there are links to a cold case that has haunted him for years.

It was a really well written and interesting story,

Thanks to Level Best Books and NetGalley for my advanced copy to read. Published in October 25th

I was struggling to read the first half of Hidden Pieces. It was written well and Mary Keliikoa did keep things moving with the investigation, although not in a way that I really enjoyed.

I felt like the sheriff was running around accusing everyone. This was explained because he hadn’t really been doing his job for the past five years because of the loss of his daughter and all three of the deputies he had were green, but it felt more like a cozy mystery with the heroine running around town accusing everyone for the slightest of reasons.

And for me, there was just so much of the sheriff’s depression leaking off the page. Which also was written well, but when I’m reading a thriller I’m more into the investigation and looking into the twisted mind of the killer. So for others this may not even register with them while reading the book.

Then we get to the second half of the book and that’s when it starts to really get interesting. Things pick up a lot. We start getting more clues and actual evidence. More than one investigation is going on. People are rushing from scene to scene, just missing the suspect. Or people who are supposed to be somewhere are not in contact.

I thought I knew what was going on the whole time and who the killer was. While I was partially correct, the twist that Keliikoa presents was wonderful and I didn’t see it coming. But looking back all the clues were there.

Because of the second half of the book I look forward to checking out more of Keliikoa’s novels.
