Having lived in the Midwest, the premise of this book intrigued me. The places in it were familiar. The story is a fictionalized history of a place, Beardstown and the arrival and establishment of settlers in this region.

An adventure story starts in 1818. A host of different characters populate the new town Beardstown - if you’re a fan of westerns this is for you

I requested this book because of the beautiful artwork on the cover. Luckily, the inside was just as good. I enjoyed this story and even though I didn't realize there was a book 1, I wasn't lost or confused. I would definitely recommend Beardstown.

I had enjoyed the previous book in the series A Panther Crosses Over, so I was excited to get back to this world. The story was so well done and I felt like I was coming back to a familiar world. It was a wonderfully done historical novel and I appreciated the historical elements in the book, I enjoyed the battle for the Midwest. The characters were a lot of fun and felt like they were realistic to the time. I can't wait to read the third part of the book and anything else Sam Foster writes in the future.

"What I need is a good quartermaster. A man who can concentrate solely on gathering supplies. How’d you like to become quartermaster of this army? Pay may be sporadic, but I’m sure the governor would make you a major or maybe a light colonel. Your grandchildren would like it.”
