I picked up Cryptid Club not connecting the fact that the Sarah Andersen that penned this creation is also responsible for Sarah’s Scribbles. So, when I opened up this ARC expecting a spooky themed graphic novel, and instead got short, adorable, one page anecdotes featuring a cast of monsters, I was a little shocked but overall very amused.
In the grand scheme of everything, Cryptid Club is really simple and very silly, but it made me laugh. I would constitute this a great novel to add to your morning affirmations. Instead of a daily calendar of inspirational quotes, you could be picking this up every morning and laughing about the absurdity of Aliens leaving you on “read” or a socially anxious Bigfoot.
I found Cryptid Club really cute, and it’s probably a book I’ll add to my arsenal of “gift ideas for people you don’t know that well,” because it’s pretty universally funny. In terms of recommending it, I would, especially if you’re a fan of these types of simple joke-and-punchline comics like Strange Planet, Sarah’s Scribbles, or Cyanide and Happiness.

This was a cute and fun comic collection. I enjoyed the art style, the creatures featured (including the loch ness monster, ghosts, mothman, and more), and the humor throughout.

Thank you to the publisher for granting me access to this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loved Sarah Andersons 'Fangs' so I was so excited to pick up her new release 'Cryptid Club'.
This collection of vignettes into the lives of the cryptids (an animal whose existence or survival is disputed or unsubstantiated, such as the yeti.) made me laugh and aw at pretty much every page. The illustration style was vibrant and colourful and the execution was hilariously brilliant.

This will be a great addition to our bookshop! Just in time for Christmas!

I've been a fan of Sarah Andersen for a long time so I was excited to read this! Cryptid Club is a book made up of individual comics that feature the daily life of cryptids like Big Foot, Mothman, the Lochness monster, etc. It has Anderson's signature wit and adorable illustrations.

Sarah Andersen’s work is clever and visually appealing. I enjoyed Fangs so much, and was not disappointed at all with this follow up.

Do you know any cryptids? What is a cryptid? According to the dictionary: it is an animal that has been claimed to exist but never proven to exist. An example would be Bigfoot. This graphic novel has many different cryptids. It’s been fun to see the different activities they did or didn’t do. I loved seeing the different cryptids that I had not heard of . The illustrations are colorful and bright. Nothing in this graphic novel is scarey as they are not portrayed as bad or mean. Have fun reading this book!

“Club Cryptid” by Sarah Anderson

5⭐️/5⭐️

The perfect graphic novel to read before the spooky season starts!

In September 2021 Sarah Anderson began posting four panel comics on a new Instagram profile, Club Cryptid. Like many, I found her comics so funny and charming. I jumped at the chance to receive an ARC of her “Club Cryptid” comic compilation, here is my honest review:

This will be a short review, there’s really not much to say about this collection; it’s 112 pages of short comics. It’s a fast read, I finished in a little over ten minutes. If you’re familiar with paranormal entities then you’ll especially get a kick out of this book, and if you’re unfamiliar with them then it’s a cute introduction. The back of the book has a little glossary of the creatures featured, which is a helpful reference.

While Anderson posted many of these comics on her Instagram page, there are never before seen comics for readers to enjoy. I think this book would be the perfect coffee table book, or gift.

“Club Cryptid” will be released September 23, 2021

This spooky little comic collection had me laughing out loud! I adore Sarah Anderson’s art style and sense of humor. I also really liked how some of the comic connected, and provided “mini plots” throughout. Sometimes comic collections can feel jumbled or choppy, but this one was absolutely perfect.

Almost coming as a let-down, considering this creator, this peoples a world of yucks with the supernatural – a Bigfoot type, Nessie, a chupacabra, cow-abducting aliens, and so on. It’s just that they didn’t really generate a laugh per se – at least, not until the Mothman started eating his birthday present of a jumper. Before that you get looks at the dating life of the undead and the unknown, many of the characters enjoying a movie night together, and so on, and it’s all far too meh. And the character that’s obsessed with its legs – well, I had no idea what the story there is supposed to be at all, at least until the closing round-up of the cast. As a side-project online while really working on something much more major, I could see this having a life, but as a stand-alone book it’s really not worth consideration, unless that completist feeling hits you.

Sarah Andersen's comics always brighten up my day and give me a giggle when they pop up on Insta so when I saw Cryptid Club I had to request it!

It is the most adorable spooky pick me up filled with cryptid cuties and lots of laughs which will cheer you up at the end of a long day. A gorgeous collection of mini comics all linked in their own way which feature some well known cryptids such as Nessie and Mothman and also some newbies to the scene like Siren Head and Nightcrawlers. It's absolute fun on each page but there's also some nice hints of real life thrown in like Nessie loving her curves and Big Foot dealing with social anxiety so it isn't just pure silliness.

A fun, cute, colourful and spooky pick me up for the Autumn months.

Short and sweet set of comics from Sarah Andersen. These are wholesome and adorable, I can’t wait to see what the characters get up to next. My favourite are the ghosts!

AN: I received a digital ARC from Andrews McMeel Publishing via NetGalley.

Cryptid Club is a hilarious, light read for anyone, really. Knowing your cryptozoology, however, will make the read even more enjoyable.

Each page is a vignette involving a cast of lovable, camera shy cryptids with deadpan humor; a Bigfoot who’s insecure about the size of his feet, a sleep paralysis demon with social anxiety, and Mothman are just a few highlights.

For those who are familiar with Sarah Andersen’s work, you’ll find plenty to smile about. For those who aren’t, this is a great way to get acquainted with short-form comics similar to other webcomics found online today.

Well thanks, Sarah Andersen, now I spend my evenings looking for sightings of haunted pants. Absolutely a delight. Laugh out loud and show a friend comics in this little volume. A good percentage of new comics on top of the ones the author shared on social media as she was working on it. I really appreciated the longer gags that extend throughout the book. Genuinely fun all around. Perfect for that big foot hunter that seems to exist in every friend circle.

This might just be my new favorite Sarah Andersen comic! I love the characters and the jokes about their origins and characteristics. They were so cute and fun and I need more of this!

Sarah Andersen is back, and taking on the cryptid club. It's so adorably dark! It would be a great gift for the Halloween lover in your life. I didn't know all the cryptids but I found this short book cute and funny and relatable. "It has pockets."

Sarah Andersen, is, as always, absolutely delightful. Her art style is adorable, her humor on point, and I adore the fact she's done a book on cryptids now! Short, fast, fun read from which I feel like I need specific comics blown up to print out as a poster.

I've been following Sarah Anderson on Instagram for quite some time, so I've seen a small handful of these already, but I was absolutely delighted to find out she was releasing an entire collection of her Cryptid comics. I loved her previous release, Fangs, and while this is very different stylistically, I thought it had a very similar cute, cozy, spooky vibe that is perfect for the Halloween season.

Cryptid Club is a collection of comics that feature, you guessed it, Cryptids! Anderson turns popular spooky figures like Bigfoot, Nessie, and Mothman on their heads and injects them with heaps of charm. She even convinced me to find Slenderman endearing, which I would have thought was impossible just an hour ago.

Each comic is relatively contained to a 4-panel story, but you can definitely see the threads of the relationships these creatures have to one another play out throughout the whole collection. Watching them date, babysit, and hang out with one another was absolutely delightful.

Overall, I thought Cryptid Club was cute, charming, and funny, which is exactly what I expect when I pick up a Sarah Anderson comic. I highly recommend!
