In this domestic thriller, life has been good for Stephanie, but 9 years ago, her flatmate, Allison, disappeared. She tries not to think about it, but a true crime TV researcher starts asking questions...
I listened to it as an audio book, and it was OK. Slow paced and predictable, I zoned out often, and I couldn't relate to any of the characters. This was my last try with this author in audio. I will however give her a chance in physical copy before dismissing completely!
I received an advance review copy for free from NetGalley and Dreamscape Media, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Domestic thrillers are my favorite, so going into this I had a good feeling about it. I am happy to report I am as happy ending it as I was starting it. I thought this was really well written. From the very first page I was hooked. I spent the entire novel going back and forth with Steph with whether we trusted her husband. I loved the way this unfurled and revealed itself little bits at a time. The distrust from Stephanie really kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. The shocking reveal definitely took me by surprise. I was flabbergasted by the turn of events. I do think the epilogue laid it on a bit thick and I could have done without Rahul coming back but if you want things tied up in a nice bow I guess that's how you do it. Overall, I thought this was a really well done thriller with the perfect amount of character development and drama. I look forward to reading more from this author. Thanks to the publisher & NetGalley for my advanced copy in exchange for a review. 7.5/10

Fun, suspenseful plot, interesting characters, a fairly satisfying (and not totally anticipated) ending; this book checked the major boxes for its genre. I enjoyed the story and pretty much flew through it because I was intrigued and wanted to see how everything would end up. I’ll be looking for more fun reads from this writer in the future.

In college, Steph’s roommate, Alison disappeared and was presumed dead. Steph managed to move on, and now she’s happily married with a family, but a true crime TV researcher opens the case back up. The interview Steph gives the researcher bring everything back and she decides the only way to get over the past is to find out, once and for all, what really happened to Alison

Reading Between the Wines book review #61/135 for 2022:
Rating: 3 🍷 🍷 🍷
Book 🎧: What She Knew
Author: Miranda Rijks
Genre: Mystery & Thrillers
Audio version RELEASES on July 21, 2022!!! Original released July 2021.

Sipping thoughts: Stephanie-naïve, mom, wife and anxiety driven. Her anxiety stems from the disappearance of her college best friend, Alison. Reading this made me wanted to shake some sense into Stephanie. Part of the reveal was very clear from the beginning but what actually happened to Alison took me by surprise. I liked how the ending tied everything up and the resolution of the mystery. I like Rijks writing style and hope to read more of her books in the future.

Cheers and thank you to @NetGalley and @DreamscapeMedia for an advance copy of @WhatSheKnew.

I really like reading books where all the characters seem suspicious. This one I suspected everyone but Stephanie and her mom. I didn't get hooked into the book but I did like it. I figured out part of the twist.

This was my first Miranda Rijks book and it won't be my last! She did a great job at really showing us how the character, Stephanie, was feeling. I liked the dual timelines. I feel it helped tell the story.

I listened and read this book. I liked the narrator!

Stephanie and Oliver are happily married with two kids. They met unconventionally. He was employed at the school when she was studying art. After the disappearance of her best friend and roommate, they grow close and she leaves school and they marry and have children quickly.

Years later, in domestic normalcy, a true crime reporter named David calls Stephanie because he’s investigating the bestie’s disappearance. She is anxious to participate because Allyson’s disappearance has haunted her and she wants answers. Oliver is displeased to the point of looking a bit suspicious.

As Stephanie and David continue opening up wounds of the past, it’s clear someone wants to stop them but why? Will this case ever be solved or will there be more grief to come?

I’ll be honest. This was pretty average. It wasn’t bad. The main character was frustrating because although she was sweet, she was very gullible. It’s hard to follow someone who keeps doing stupid things. People do 50 suspicious things and she’s like “I have no reason to suspect them!” But it was still a nice, quick read and it ended well.

Thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the chance to listen and review! The audio narration is great.

So many "cold-case missing student" books,
So little time.

What really happened to Stephanie's flatmate Alison when she vanished nine years ago?

Unfortunately, there is no need to buckle one's seatbelt for "What She Knew".

In addition to being very slow-paced and underwhelming, the book was more formulaic than suspenseful.

The protagonist was spineless and the book lacked the "sucker punch" big reveals of the author's earlier books.

I am a huge fan of Miranda Rijks so perhaps my expectations were set too high.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was good but not great.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

2.5 stars.
