Alligator Alley, a thriller by Mike Lawson, does not disappoint. I am grateful to NetGalley and Grove Atlantic Publishers for the opportunity to read an advance copy of the 16th book featuring Joe Demarco, a fixer (or troubleshooter) for John Mahoney, a corrupt, longtime U.S. Congressman.

As with his other novels, Larson’s writing in Alligator Alley is fast paced, his plotting inventive and well-paced, and his characters well rounded and memorable. When a young lawyer in the Department of Justice is found dead in Florida, Demarco is sent by the Congressman to investigate and find out who is responsible. Complicating the matter is that the woman’s boss suspects the FBI are involved in her murder. Worse, as far as the Congressman is concerned, is that Emma, an enigmatic and secretive former spy and member of the Defense Intelligency Agency, would also be involved. The two have a rather icy relationship. I do hope that Emma shows up in future novels.

Rounding out the twisty plot are two corrupt and somewhat incompetent FBI agents, a missing cell phone, alligators, and a whole lot of stolen money.

I have never tired of reading Lawson’s Demarco series, and I have read every one, after a mutual friend introduced us. They are entertaining and great fun.

Outstanding book. I highly recommend this. The plot is predictable but still holds your attention. Characters interaction is fun.

Joe DeMarco, fixer for House Speaker Mahoney returns in another thriller from Mike Lawson. But this time he serves more as a sidekick as returning character Emma takes the lead in tracking down the murder of a young woman who had been investigating crooked FBI agents.. Lots of action, lots of humor add to an excellent story..

This book was enjoyable, and I read it in a day. It was interesting, but don’t expect any real plot twists. It’s more about capturing people who did wrong. While there’s no mystery or “whodoneit”, I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to be entertained for a short while. It also had a satisfying ending. Apparently this book is just one of many with the same main characters, so I might have to check out his other books.

I absolutely could not out this book down. Everytime I thought the storyline might be starting to feel stale, there was a twist! The character dynamic is great; well thought out and fully developed. The chapter 29/30 plot twist made me sad, but I understand why it had to happen. The grammar and writing has a nice flow and is easy to read--I couldn't put this book down until I finished it! My students are too young for me to recommend it to, but I will absolutely recommend this to my book club!
