Although not as strong as the first volume, this continues to be a solid magical girl story, which is impressive in a shounen title, given the genre's shoujo roots.

After not being that impressed with the first volume, I gave the second volume a try. I shouldn't have. Flat, one- note characters; relationships and plots that are flimsy, rushed, and perfunctory; and a stupid amount of fan service. This is not the series for me.

Volume Two brings us a load more action and really delves into Chloe becoming a Reaper. I do really love Chloe as a character and there's definitely a few intriguing points scattered throughout the volume that piqued my interest, however I'm not entirely sure I'll continue on with this series.

While I like the art style, characters, action and premise, and I'm not averse to a little bit of silliness in a manga, I am struggling with all the fanservice at this point and it's to a point that it's making it a little bit unenjoyable.

Volume 2 of ghost reaper girl is here and the monster fighting gang is back! I do have to admit that it had been a while since I read volume one and had to take a minute to refresh my brain, but once I remembered it was smooth sailing. This volume follows Chloe and she adjusts to sharing her body with not one but two spirits in order to defeat the monsters that hunt in her world.

This story had a lot of empathy which I really liked. Chole isn't just here to kill monsters, but is also here to connect with others, make friends, and persevere in becoming famous.

I think I actually liked this one better than the first volume! Chloe is beginning to take strides as the real-life Ghost Reaper Girl and has all the cool tech that comes with being a member of Arkham.
I think this volume really highlighted Chloe's incredible ability to read and understand people and spirits and to meet them where they are to draw out their full potential. I love that aspect of her character.

This volume was so good! We got to see our lovely trio work together more and start to mesh with each other. I always enjoy Noel and his cat antics. We do see a new person that works for the same institution, Arkham Bullet, that Cloe works for called the Reanimatorwho wants to make her into a zombie. They end up working together along with the Reanimator's latest creation, Shoggoth, to defeat a large black blob enemy. Overall, this was a really fun volume and I really enjoyed getting to see all the new characters in this volume. I'm looking forward to volume 3!

Volume two gets so much more into the action of Chloe Love being a ghost reaper. She needs another friend or acquaintance and learns more about her powers and how ghost reaping is like a video game. The more things she completes the more points she earns the more things she can afford. While this volume is not as heavy as the first one, you still have very sexual characters that are sexualized for no reason. And I just don’t really find myself enjoying it. This is more to do with the sexualization of the characters and less to do with the action sequences. There is actually a great story, but it is hidden under sexism and toxic masculinity. Therefore, I shall end this series with volume two.

Ghost Reaper Girl Volume Two
Written by: Akissa Saike
Publisher: Shueisha Inc.
English Publisher: VIZ Media
Release Date: September 6, 2022

Volume Two opens with the fight at Arkham Bullet that ended the first volume of the series. Early on, Chloe is possessed by Noel, her new cat-like familiar. With this possession, she acquires cat ears and can move and fight in a cat-like way. Chloe’s ability to work with her familiars during the fight impresses Nyarlathotep, the director of the Arkham Far East Branch. It turns out this fight was to test Chloe and her abilities, and Nyarlathotep is satisfied with the result. Chloe is asked to help investigate the evil spirits that escaped from a prison in Hades and are causing problems in the human realm. She accepts and is given a smartphone license and her code name. Her code name is “Ghost Reaper Girl,” which is what people have been referring to Chloe as since the video of her went viral in Volume One. As Nyarlathotep says, it’s a pretty good code name, and it’s appropriate for describing what she does.

Nyarlathotep is an… interesting character. Apparently, she’s currently into “playing doctor” and dressing up like a nurse. She also seems to have developed a fascination with Chloe, which is played for humor early on in Volume Two. With some of the panels we see of Nyarlathotep throughout this volume, she seems to be utilized for “fanservice” in addition to serving as the person that Chloe, Kai, and Noel report to for their missions. Right now, I’m just kind of “meh” about this character. If I read future volumes of this series, I hope that Nyarlathotep will progress as a character and not continue to have such a one-dimensional portrayal.

Chloe, Kai, and Noel are being watched by a couple of people as Chloe is learning the ropes for exterminating enemy souls. She is suddenly attacked by three guys, and she is rescued by Kai and Noel. This leads to the introduction of a new character: Reanimator West. He works for Arkham Bullet, but he focuses more on turning dead people into zombies, and he asks Chloe to turn over her corpse to him. Of course, she wants nothing to do with this, but West is determined to take her. Even though both Chloe and West work for Arkham Bullet, she learns that the organization doesn’t have any rules against colleagues fighting.

Most of the rest of the volume focuses on West and his attempts to capture Chloe. This includes West unleashing his female assassin that was created by fusing a corpse and maneater genes found in the South Pole. Shoggoth, the female assassin, is quite skilled, and it takes everything Chloe and her familiars have to try to hold her back. Their fight is interrupted with the arrival of an evil spirit that Arkham Bullet wants Chloe and West to take down together. Even with her abilities, Shoggoth is having trouble holding back the evil spirit.

Let’s just say that it takes Chloe and Shoggoth working together to take down the evil spirit, and that “the power of friendship” comes into play. It turns out that Shoggoth isn’t entirely the mindless killing machine that West thinks she is, so what happens here takes him completely by surprise.

For most of the volume after his introduction, West comes across as being a creepy doctor and that he doesn’t see Shoggoth as anything other than a mindless killing machine that he created. While his depiction is softened somewhat by the end of the volume, I can’t ignore his depiction earlier in the volume. I think he’s always going to come across as a little creepy to me, even if he is somehow redeemed in later volumes of Ghost Reaper Girl.

Shoggoth was depicted as not having feelings and mindlessly doing what was expected of her, but thanks to Chloe breaking through her shell, we learn that there’s more to Shoggoth that what she was outwardly showing. It really feels like Saike is setting the stage for Chloe and Shoggoth to be friends going forward. I think it would be nice for Chloe to have a female friend, even if Shoggoth is only capable of saying one word.

After reading Volume Two, I have to admit that I’m still feeling kind of “meh” about this series. It’s not necessarily bad, but between the two volumes I’ve read, there’s not much there to appeal to me personally. I wouldn’t be adverse to reading future volumes of the series if VIZ Media makes review copies of them available, because I am willing to give the series a chance to grow on me. While I may not have enjoyed this volume as much as I could have, I still think that readers who read and enjoyed the first volume of Ghost Reaper Girl will be satisfied with how the story progresses.

I received an eARC of this title through NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I thought this continued to be a fun read. Chloe begins her journey as a certified ghost reaper with her two spirit companions. It all starts off fun, but grows toward a greater plot line in this volume. I like that there is more to this story now than just a girl with an extraordinary gift. There are characters who are looking to use her either for experimentation or for something more nefarious.

I'm glad the story hinted at a greater plot than a simple slash and dash manga. (Not sure if that's a term but that's how I think of them). There seems to be more brewing behind the agency Chloe is now a part of. However, whatever seems to happen, Chloe continues to remain true to herself and make friends along the way. I think the first volume had a bit of a slow start to the main story, but the character development of Chloe was well worth the wait. I'm excited to see where this series goes.

I enjoyed the first novel, so when the second volume was available on NetGalley - I had to read it! Since volume one left off on a cliffhanger, it made the start of this one even better. Chloe is the perfect vessel and two familiars have become super attached to her. When they possess her, she becomes Ghost Reaper Girl. She becomes a badass. She helps send ghosts back and even the director seems to have taken a shine to her. And... in this volume.. there's a hint at romantic entanglement! The intrigue. I love the art work - it's always tastefully rendered and well thought out.

I like how Chloe is this sought after/fought for being, yet she just shares whatever she has and remains blissfully happy despite all that happens. Action packed from start to end.

I really enjoyed volume one of this series. It was quirky and self-aware enough to feel fresh. This volume, unfortunately, didn't add much. But it's only volume 2, and the world and characters are still coming together. Definitely ready to give volume 3 a shot.

4/5

Here we go again. Ghost Reaper Girl, Vol 2. continues the story of Chloé Love, a minor actress who was down on her luck when she became entangled in an evil-spirit fighting world. It continues right where we left off in Vol. 1.

This series continues to be so fun in a ridiculous way. The new characters introduced were interesting and it’s fun to see Chloé staying true to herself in this cruel world.

The art is bonkers amazing. The action sequences? Amazing. The artist also draws Chloé in really cool poses, and the anatomy stays perfect. Insane. Even during the calm parts the art is absolutely beautiful. The character designs are great. I especially like how detailed Chloé is depending on the different forms she takes (ie. her cat eyes).

I’m still super down to continue reading this series. It seems like we’re really ramping up to a big showdown sometime in the future and I’m excited to see if there’ll be new characters and forms as well.

Reminder that this manga reads left to right (as per the authors request).
