This gripped me from start to finish. I had to know what happened to Emily. Everyone was truly just heinous toward her and i felt so sorry for her character. The amount of abuse she endured and didn’t deserve a single ounce was astounding. I don’t doubt tho that that’s how women were treated during that time..

It did keep me flipping the pages wanting answers and justice. There were so many unlikeable characters but some that were likable and that i rooted for.

I also loved getting to know Andrea and Bible. I thought her character was so much better in this novel that in Pieces Of Her. the strong female character, the bad ass that you always want in a book! I loved digging deeper with her.

I enjoyed this one so much more.

The narration was great as well. She really pulled you into the story.

This book was fantastic and I had such a fun time discussing with my #TandemReadAlong group! I found both timelines and POVs entertaining, but I really loved seeing Andrea’s character grow.

This book was fabulous, set in both the early 80s and present day 2020s. I particularly loved the 80s scenes, as it reminded me of how far women have come, and that we WILL win the fight in going further to secure our rights. When once society was judgemental of a pregnant teen, now we have daycare in high schools. It is no longer ok for teachers to entertain inappropriate relationships with teens. What is considered rape of a woman now was formerly a woman being a whore. The book is well-written, lots of twists and turns, characters with whom her fans are surely familiar. The audiobook narrator keeps everything flowing well and has distinguishable voices for the numerous cast. This is the second Slaughter audio I have listened to and I am a huge fan now.

Title: Girl, Forgotten
Author: Karin Slaughter
Rating: 3.5/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (Rounded up to 4 Stars on GoodReads, Amazon and Netgalley)

Girl Forgotten is the sequel to Pieces of Her, though I feel like it could be read as a standalone. There are some recaps throughout the book that will give you the information needed to follow along with this story, but I still would recommend reading Pieces of Her first.

This was only my second book by Karin Slaughter, and I must say, she can really tell a story! This was a difficult one for me to rate because there were many things that I enjoyed about this one, while there were definitely things about this one that stuck out as a con for me. Slaughter has a way with words like no other, her storytelling is truly a masterpiece, and she can rope you into a story in no time. This one was super interesting right from the start, but there were parts that lagged a bit and led me to not want to pick it up. This one is pretty lengthy, and length doesn't usually bother me, but since I was given an ALC, the 15+ hours was a bit of a hesitancy, I really don't think the story needed to be as long as it was, it felt like there was a lot of “fluff” added in.

This one is told in the past of 1982 with Emily Vaugn and through the present through the investigation of Andrea Oliver.  I loved the dual timeline and was really excited to continue with Andrea and Laura's story, but I found that part a bit dull and drug out and found myself much more interested in Emily's story throughout the novel. Granted the end of the story, I did find myself more interested in Andrea's part. I found that there was a great connection in the end of the story to tie everything together, so that was much appreciated. A huge bonus for me was the setting in Delaware and the fact I knew the landmarks that were talked about in this one.

As stated above I received this one via @netgalley as an ALC and really loved how the narrator told this story. It was super easy to follow along with and she did a great job depicting the characters. Huge thank you to Netgalley and @blackstonepublishing for the ALC!

Overall, this was a good listen, though I don't think that this will go down as a favorite of mine by Karin Slaughter. Is it worth the read? Absolutely, I'm happy I continued with this story and was able to see the character building.

Girl Forgotten is the new book from Karin Slaughter. The daughter from Pieces of Her, Andrea, is the main character.

“Freshly minted US Marshal Andrea Oliver heads to Longbill Beach on her first assignment to help guard a judge that had received death threats. She is also trying to find the killer of the judges daughter who was murdered on Prom night 40 years ago. Andrea has a connection to one of the suspects that no one knows about. Can she find the killer in a very cold case?”

If you’re a fan of crime fiction/thrillers get this book. If you enjoy a wild story get this book.
Kathleen Early does a fabulous job with the narration. Lots of characters, male and female and she distinctive with each one. Feels like she has the most fun when a character gets angry.

There are dual timelines here. We get Emily’s story (the daughter) and Andrea’s efforts to find a killer. The writing is not as gruesome as many previous books but the same themes - Slaughter writes about the disrespect and violence against women.

If you like a cult in your story you’ll love this. You may guess some of the twists but not all. Slaughter keeps you invested - l had a difficult time putting this book down. Might be my new favorite Slaughter book.

And now that KS has a new Marshal, how about a crossover story with Lucas Davenport? What do you say @karinslaughterauthor ?
Add this to your reading list this year!

This was my first Karin Slaughter book and I REALLY enjoyed it!! The second book in the Andrea Oliver series, it definitely can be read as a standalone (I haven't read the first one and didn't think it hurt my reading experience much).

In this book Andrea has recently graduated and is a new US Marshal. Her first assignment sees her reuniting with former boyfriend Mike and given protective duty to a federal Judge receiving death threats.

Told in a dual timeline structure, we get to dig into the mystery behind the death threats AND the cold case involving the death of the judge's daughter Emily in 1982. I enjoyed how the story seamlessing switched timelines, slowly building clues as to what happened and helping eliminate possible suspects both in who raped the judge's daughter and then later who was responsible for killing her while pregnant.

Lots of trigger warnings in this book!! Some violence against women on page, but nothing too graphic or gory. Very layered and twisty and extremely cleverly plotted!! None of my predictions were right which always makes for a more enjoyable reading experience!

Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy and to HarperCollins Canada and Tandem Global Collective for sending me a gifted copy in exchange for my honest review!

Please run do not walk to go listen or read this book.

I read Pieces of Her Last year and absolutely loved it. I was excited to get to read another book following Andrea. First off, Kathleen Early did a phenomenal job. Early is one of my favourite narrators and she brought the story to life.
Quick Synopsis
Andrea Oliver has just finished her US Marshall training and her first post has been given to her. She is to help guard a judge who has been receiving death threats, but she also has a hidden agenda. To find out who killed Emily Vaughn all those years ago. This thriller is full of twists and turns, and a hint of cults.

I personally could not put this audiobook down. It took me only two days to complete it and I wanted more. In this second installment of Andrea Oliver, I felt an even stronger connection to her than in the first book. Her assigned partner in her first posting was extremely loveable and I really enjoyed what he added to the story. Karin Slaughter always keeps me on my toes as I attempt to figure out what happened and I never tend to figure out the entirety of the twist. I appreciate how the twists always turn out to be realistic.

Please check trigger warning before reading this book as it deal with a large amount of dark subject matter.

I'm a couple days behind on this review, and that's because I had no idea this was book two in a series when I requested it shortly before pub day. 🙈 So of course I had to cram in "Pieces of Her" first, and I even binged the Netflix series. And I'm SO glad I did!! It helped give context to Andrea's part of the book. I felt more invested as I had spent so much time with Andrea and the characters from Pieces of Her.

Girl, Forgotten is equally fantastic!! It's what I call an "onion" read, with layers upon layers. The layers are revealed slowly over time throughout the book. The start was a tad slow, but it picked up fairly quickly and gripped me. I was INVESTED!!🙌

This book is a complex, imaginative, page-turner of a thriller. It is quite a bit darker than Pieces of Her, to be honest, so folks should be sure to check CWs. I loved it!!! I really enjoy past/present timelines. I love the mystery and suspense -- the guessing. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat!!!

Thank you for the gifted ALC NetGalley and Blackstone Pub. 💕

Andrea’s first assignment once she completed her US Marshal training was to protect a judge who is receiving death threats. However, she is more interested in trying to find out who killed Emily decades ago. Emily was pregnant and killed on prom night. The more Andrea investigates the friends of Emily, the more she suspects foul play by several of them. I really liked this book. Andrea has secrets of her own that haunt her as she both protects the judge and explores Emily’s killing. In looking into Emily’s peers, she is confronted with drugs, bribery, sexual assault, and torture of young girls at a farm. Lots of surprises and adventure. Great characters.

I have never met a Karin Slaughter book I didn't like. I didn't realize this was book was the second book in a series and while it's not necessary to read the first book it would've helped fill in some gaps. This book sees Andrea, a newly minted US Marshall go to her imprisoned, birth fathers hometown. While officially there to watch over a judge she is also there to dig into a connected cold case. Anyone who enjoys Karin Slaughter or thrillers will enjoy this book.

Happy Pub Week to Girl Forgotten.

The transformation in Andy’s character from the book that proceeds Girl Forgotten- Pieces of Her - is a complete 180! I love how she has matured and gained more confidence. It no doubt has to do with what she went through in Pieces Of Her but probably also with the fact that she has just graduated from the US Marshall's academy and is now a US Marshall.

Right after graduation she is sent on her first assignment. This assignment is two fold - protect a Federal Judge who has received death threats and find a way to gather evidence to pin the 1980s death of a pregnant teen on her cult leader imprisoned father. Where these cases takes Andy is to a small town filled secrets, lies and more deaths.

This was a really nice follow up to Pieces Of Her. I'm so glad Andy’s transition as a badass confident US Marshall looms large in this book. The contrast to who she is now and who she was in Pieces Of Her is one of the most striking things about Girl Forgotten.

Another striking element is the dual timeline of the 1980s life of pregnant teen Emily and her delinquent friends. You can't help but feel sorry for her even before she is murdered. She is pregnant, has awful "friends" and parents and the whole town turns its back on her. This is a bit of an origin story of sorts for one of her friends who plays a major role in Pieces Of Her. Let's just say they haven't changed much in 40 years - certainly not for the better.

Girl Forgotten like most of Karin Slaughter's books, is full of triggers like eating disorders, sexual assault, violence, murder, misogyny, homphobia, child abuse and the whole kitchen sink of thriller triggers. so be warned before diving in.

Girl Forgotten is such a well written book with really unique and stand out side characters that have some of the best dialogue. The narration was brilliantly done which allowed me to lose myself in the story even more. Pieces of Me is my favorite of the two books but Girl Forgotten was really quite memorable.

I was not expecting another book about Andrea Oliver after Pieces of Her. . This book was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed seeing more of her story. Andrea becomes a US Marshal and is sent on her first assignment protecting a judge that has been receiving death threats. She finds herself embroiled in a 40 year old cold case of a 17 year old murdered girl. Andrea finds herself learning the secrets in this small town.

Once again Slaughter creates a page turning thriller that keeps you guessing until the last page. The characters in the town have so many secrets and connections to the past that will make your head spin in classic Karin Slaughter fashion. It is a solid mystery and one of her best.

The pacing and narration were very good for the audiobook.

Thank you to NetGalley for the audio version in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first Karin Slaughter book I have read. The characters were well developed and I became vested in their situations. I kept trying (and failing) at determining who Killed Emily Vaughn.

Audiobook Review:
This is the second book in the Andrea Oliver series from Karin Slaughter and I absolutely enjoyed it just as much as the first installment if not a little bit more.

This story picks up a couple years following the conclusion of Pieces of Her and jumps right in with Andy working as an US Marshall as she is sent to work as protection for a Judge in the hometown of a forgotten girl Emily Vaughn who was brutally murdered while 7 months pregnant after experiencing a sexual assault that led to the pregnancy and to further complicate matters, she doesn’t know who assaulted her and who’s child she was carrying. Both crimes had been relatively forgotten and left alone for many years, but when Andrea comes to town she can’t help but poke around this town with hopes to figure out who r@ped Emily, and did they also murder her?

I loved the twists and turns of her investigation and the different POV as we get Emily’s POV leading up to her murder and present day of the investigation effortlessly blended together.

This one really solidified that I will be reading more from Karin Slaughter!

I love anything Karin Slaughter writes and so of course, I read Pieces of Her. However, I don't really remember a lot of it! But that didn't prevent me from thoroughly enjoying Girl, Forgotten. It did take me a bit to get into this since I had completely forgotten the history of Andrea and her mother. It's a dual timeline and I found myself more invested in Andrea's story than Emily's initially. But once the story progressed, I became totally engrossed in both as I tried to guess what was going to happen next. I loved the narrator and it's usually difficult for me to pay attention to audiobooks.

A Girl Forgotten is book #2 of the Andrea Oliver series and it was a 5 ⭐️ for me. I chose to listen to this book on audio and it was narrated by Kathleen Early. She narrated book #1 also and was excellent. I’m really excited because I believe we’re going to have a book #3! Yay!
You can read this as a stand-alone if you’re wondering but book #1 was really good and I suggest reading it as well. It was well written and cleverly told it kept me glued to my seat. There’s mystery and suspense throughout and I finished it in one day and thought it was so well done.
KS has such a unique way of creative interesting situations with breath holding surprises. It was told in dual POV, past and present. The audiobook is over 15 hours of listening which I highly recommend listening to.

If you have followed me for any amount of time at all your know that I am a Slaughter STAN and this was easily one of my most anticipated books of 2022!
This is the second installment of Andrea Oliver's series, and although this can easily be a stand-alone book, I REALLY don't think you should read this one without reading "Pieces of Her" first. (honestly, you could even get away with just watching the show on Netflix if you are pressed for time!!)

I love Andrea in book one, she was so young and dumb and was just thrown into this crazy world. I loved that we got to fast forward a few years to see where she currently ended up. Slaughter also has this insane way of always having her finger on the pulse of what is currently going on in society, so I just loved Emily Vaughn's story. It felt so prevalent to what women are facing in government today so Slaughter got extra brownie points of that!

FAVORITE NARRATOR OF ALL TIME!!!!!!

As of late, the thriller/mystery genre has left me feeling so unsatisfied, underwhelmed, and frustrated. I didn't have much hope, going into the spooky season, that I'd find many five-star reads. Many of my recent reads have been redundant in plot or in concept, and overdone in the worst, try-hard kind of way.

Enter: Karin Slaughter

I. Am. OBSESSED! with Karin Slaughter's writing style. This was my first K.S. novel and I can already tell she isn't a cookie-cutter thriller author. I have already added her to my auto-buy author list. My Amazon cart has much of her backlist. It's officially, I'm a fan.

This book is layered, dynamic, and both well written and well narrated. The plot was original, the red herrings were perfectly subtle, the reveal was unexpected but was not impossible or unreasonable, and the reader isn't left yelling at the main character for overlooking obvious clues. The duel timeline was impeccably presented, and the two first-person POVs contrasted so well that they truly felt like two different people. Both of these writing techniques can make a book fall flat if not executed well.

And the narrator, Kathleen Early... Bravo. Truly. Have you ever listened to an audiobook where you had to take a break, not because of the story, but because of the narrator's voice? I have!!! This narrator, however, left me enjoying this book at home, at work, while driving, at the gym, and while grocery shopping. I could listen to her all day! I'll surely be looking for her other work going forward.

If you haven't read a Karin Slaughter novel, the time is now. Get the audiobook!

Thank you, @netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this novel prior to publishing in exchange for an honest review 🤍

Andrea Oliver has just graduated from U.S. Marshal Service training and her first case assignment hits pretty close to home. Assigned to protect a judge is just part of her assignment. Her uncle wants her to investigate an unsolved murder from 1982 in hopes of keeping her father behind bars.

I'm a relatively new fan of Karin Slaughter. I only discovered her books 5 years ago and I've enjoyed the 5 books I've read so far. I don't usually listen to suspense and thriller audiobooks, but her stories are so captivating that I tend to become solely focused on the story.

I didn't realize that Girl, Forgotten was book two in the Andrea Oliver series. But it doesn't matter. I assume book one is focused on why Andrea and her mother are in the Witness Protection Program. As this is only the second book and Andrea is just embarking on her Marshal Service career and the case is related to her own past there is plenty of backstory to let you get to know the characters.

I really liked Andrea and her complex past makes for an interesting story. I assume we will see more of Mike in future books as he is the marshal who oversees Andrea's mother's witness protection. He is full of personality so it will be fun to watch the complicated relationship between him and Andrea. I'm not sure if Leonard Bible, her partner, will appear in future books as she hasn't decided on which area she wants to go into. I liked him though and hope to see him again.

Girl, Forgotten is a dual timeline story. We switch between Emily in 1982 and Andrea in present day. My only real complaint about the story is that there are no immediate indications that we have switched timelines which I think is more confusing when listening to the audiobook. You figure it out within the first paragraph or so of a new chapter but I would have liked for there to have been a chapter heading or something so it was evident right from the start of the chapter.

Emily's story was a real eye-opener to the early 1980s for me. I was just a child then so I didn't really know misogynistic it was. I'm sure my eyes were bugging out of my head during the interaction she had with her pediatrician (a man). I was like how the heck was this a doctor let alone a doctor for children.

Kathleen Early does a great job as the narrator. There are a lot of characters some of them appear in both timelines and I felt they were all given distinct voices which made the story easy to follow.

The audiobook is kind of long - almost 16 hours - but I was so focused on the story that the time flew by yet at the same time I feel like I "got my money's worth" so to speak. If you are looking for a story that will suck you in, then this is the book to pick up.

My review will be published at Girl Who Reads on Tuesday - https://www.girl-who-reads.com/2022/08/girl-forgotten-by-karin-slaughter.html

Summary: In 1982, pregnant Emily Vaughn is murdered on her prom night.

Fast forward 40 year, and Andrea Oliver has graduated US Marshall academy and her first assignment is to protect a federal judge who has been getting death treats. However this is just a cover, because Andrea is also there to solve the murder of Emily.

Review: It has been way to long since I’ve read a Karin Slaughter book. This book was fast paced and I didn’t want to put it down. The way Karin weaved together the two storylines was phenomenal. I’m going to go back now and reread her other books,
