The blurb focuses a lot on Cara Fraser and her sons, Ryan and Sean and whilst the latter part of the book they do come more to the front it is the Bryson's who feature as the main runners at the start. Angie Bryson & her husband Dale have their fingers in a lot of pies and Cara's husband Kyle and brother Ian work for the Brysons, distributing drugs primarily. Angie and Cara don't get on and Kyle and Ian have put their plans in motion to become the top dogs. The timeline splits between then and now when the Frasers have decided, again the time is right, the time is now.

There is a lot of rivalry, competitiveness as often there is in gangland type books, fights for power, actions and consequences, shady underhanded behaviour and of course some people will go to any levels for what they feel is due them. Revenge, pride, business, drugs, rivalry, family, murder and is it even a gangster stle book if we don't have betrayal.

There are quite a few relationship dynamics, some you are shaking your head at antics/choices and behaviours but in this lifestyle it is a different world. One characters behavior though I was almost screaming NOOOOOOOO what are you doing?!?!?!

I have read a few of Kane's books and have another couple on my tbrm, when you pick up the books you can get lost in a different world or chaos and danger just waiting for some consequence to their actions. Bad behaviour, shady choices and the old secrets can never remain in the past dun dun dun, 4/5 for me, a wee bit of build up setting the scene and then you are plunged right in! This is a standalone, if you like gangster/ganglands then this is for you - oh and it is set in Glasgow.

What a powerful book, full of crime, revenge, and anger.

Pow, it hits you right between the eyes and doesn't stop until the last page.

It revolves around two gangster families in Glasgow the Brysons and the Frasers. They are notorious and ruthless. Secrets come out and surprise's to keep the reader spinning the pages to get another fix of violence and crime.

You can enjoy the story with good characters, descriptions, and well-written descriptions.
Another excellent book from Miss Kane. Who is rising through the ranks as a crime writer to watch out for?

Thank you, NetGalley, for allowing me to read and review this excellent book. xx

Wow what can I say this is a gripping, gritty, explosive gangland read. I was hooked from page one. Two mothers from rival gangs clash in a club, but this is just the tip of the iceberg of what’s been going on between these two families. Make sure you have time to read as I can guarantee you won’t want to put this book down. A well deserved five star read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This great read spirals towards its dark conclusion, wrong footing the increasingly uneasy reader at every turn. This twisty thriller is jam-packed with tense moments and a growing sense of unease…..

The Mother by Alex Kane.
A decade ago, Cara Fraser, wife to one of Glasgow’s most notorious gangsters, was left a widow after Kyle Fraser was slain on the city streets. The intervening years haven’t been easy – not least as Kyle’s murder left her to bring up little Ryan and Sean alone. Now, Ryan and Sean are adults, and honouring their father’s memory by rising up to become the top gangsters on the dark streets of Glasgow. Cara’s kept her head down, but has spent the last few years vowing to take vengeance on the crime family who killed her beloved husband and left her children without a father. Glasgow gangland is about to discover that a mother will do anything for her family… even murder.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Page Turner. 5*.

Thanx to NetGalley, the publishers and the author for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this book.
I have never read any other books by this author and had o preconceived ideas as to her writing
What a great read this was! The story was based in Glasgow and that made for an exciting read as that is my home city!
This book was very readable with a great many twists and unexpected turns with a few snatches of Glaswegian!
The characters were very real, especially the mothers who fought for their children in the same style as any good Glaswegian would do!!
Will definitely look out for books by same author, really enjoyed this book!

Angie is the matriarch of the Brysons, Glasgow’s pre-eminent crime family, and Cara Fraser’s family are a cog in their machine. These Mothers hate each other. Cara’s husband, Kyle, and his brother, Ian, receive packages of drugs from the Brysons and pass them on to local dealers, using James McIntosh to do the actual handovers. The Fraser brothers are planning to insidiously take-over the business from the Brysons, two small-time crims living in council flats versus the pre-eminent crime family, who live in a mansion, employ hundreds of people, own a major construction company and a more or less legitimate Casino. Consequently, it is no surprise when the brothers are found dead, and McIntosh is found guilty of shooting them. Cara and her two young sons fled the city but now, nine years later, they are back and seeking revenge. The Brysons don’t know this, so don’t know who to blame when someone starts shooting at Angie and her husband Dale while they are renewing their marriage vows at a big event in a flash hotel. As they try to find and stop whoever it is, we discover the back history of the various characters and the secrets which bind them. The plot is fairly straightforward, but it is quite an interesting idea. There are a few mysteries to resolve but they aren’t particularly complicated, and the ending does resolve them all. Whether you find these resolutions satisfactory or not is moot.
On the face of it, this is a gangster shoot-em-up, of betrayals and reprisals and an uncritical reader might skate over the plot problems, of which there are a few. In fact, the mechanics of the story fall down at several points; for example, if the Brysons are the pre-eminent crime family they would know the Frasers were back in town. Writing style can sometimes coast the reader past such glitches but doesn’t here, because the text is too repetitive – reprising things is sometimes useful in a complex multi-stranded plot, but it must be done sparingly and it shouldn’t make the reader think that their memory needs jogging. A case in point is the pre-eminence of the Brysons. I have mentioned this four times in this review to reflect the frequency with which we are told this in the book. These problems aren’t sufficiently offset by the basic plot to pull my score up.
I would like to thank NetGalley, the publishers and the author for providing me with a draft proof copy for the purpose of this review.

Angie Bryson is a woman who will do anything to protect her children and at any cost. Her family due to the business that her husband is in are well known. They are rich and want for nothing. When another family that works for them decide to get a piece of their lifestyle it doesn't exactly go well for them. Certain people have ticked off and crossed boundaries that you don't do to the Brysons and it will cost them thier lives.
Years later the wife and children of the deceased want revenge and will stop at nothing until they get it.
I really enjoyed reading this book and had plenty of action in it.

I’d like to thank Hera Books and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Mother’ written by Alex Kane in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Ten years ago Cara Fraser’s husband Kyle and his brother Ian are killed in a gangland killing by the Brysons, Glasgow’s top gangster family. Since then Cara has singlehandedly brought up her two sons Ryan and Sean but she’s always been determined to make the Brysons, Angie, Dale, Paul and Bob, pay for taking away her husband and as her sons have grown older they’ve also become involved in Cara’s scheming.

‘The Mother’ is a gritty and compelling thriller of two gangster families, the Brysons and the Frasers, with both mothers intent on keeping their families safe. From page one I’ve been gripped by the gruesome plot that’s had loads of drama, suspense and intrigue, not to mention bloodshed as both families want to take the other one out of circulation. I’ve been thoroughly involved as the story has progressed until reaching the conclusion that was a complete surprise and not at all how I’d expected it to end. This is an enjoyable thriller that’s well-written, easy to read and one I can recommend.

At times you can feel the trouble brewing through the pages. Secrets are about to surface. Cara Fraser and Angie Brysin will do anything to keep their family safe. But the two families are about to collide. The characters are well developed and likeable. This book is action packed, gripping and I found it hard to put the book down. I never saw that ending coming. I loved this gangland crime book.

📚📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖📚

📖 Book - The Mother
✍️ Author - Alex Kane
📕 Publisher - Hera Books
🗓 Publication Date - 6th Oct 2022

Cara Fraser comes back Glasgow after many years. Having been the wife of a Glasgow Gangster, who was killed a number of years ago. Cara returns with her 2 sons, who will do everything, to find out who killed their father!

The story goes between when the boys were much younger and Cara is still married to her husband. I love when books do this. Gives me a better chance, to understand the characters that I am reading about. What made them as they are, or how they act.

I don’t give a 5 star easily BUT Alex yet again, caused me late nights, no housework or dinners made 🤣🤣! One of my authors, that I pre warn family, I’m off duty whilst reading their books!

Brilliant read yet again.
Thanks #netgalley #themother #alexkane #herabooks

This is the first book I have read from Alex Kane and it won't be the last. I had got a bit fed up of gangland type stories but thought I would start again with this one and I'm glad I did. Like father like son springs to mind. Very entertaining and although I guessed what the outcome would be it didn't spoil the story.
