Secluded Cabin, Sleeps Three opens during a somewhat acrimonious Christmas gathering when successful tech mogul Mako and his wife are opening presents at his parent’s house. His sister Hannah and brother-in-law Bruce and other family members discover a surprise package under the tree revealing a “Genesis” DNA testing kit. However, no one claims responsibility these presents. Mako announces his offer to pay for a fantastic vacation for himself and his wife, Lisa and two other couples that will take place six months later at a secluded cabin in the Georgia woods foreshadowing the events that will take place. Leading up to the vacation that will soon take place the story builds chapter by chapter. There are revelations about the charismatic and dominating Mako and his relationship with his wife, former girlfriend, sister and brother in law. Interwoven in the primary story are several new characters whose stories show up as flashbacks outside the linear narrative.

Things are tied together during the final third of the book when the three couples end up together in their isolated cabin during the threat of a hurricane . The story is told mainly from the point of view of Hannah who is a more likeable character than her brash and domineering brother. Yet there is a lot of similarity among the three women who express their desires as wives and mothers. The men often engage in heavy drinking and recreational drugs . There are also descriptions of sexual violence that may turn some readers off. Ultimately I had to ask if I really cared enough about these characters to keep reading but I did finish if not completely satisfied with the ending. Revealing the connection among the characters through their DNA offered an interesting angle. People who enjoy plot twists and like to be thrilled should be sufficiently on edge to read to the end.

I was so excited for this book. I love a great secluded thriller. Unfortunately the varying plots and time swaps just didn’t do it for me. I found the secondarily plot (that winds up converging, to be very unrealistic. If the start had been kept about the secluded six it would have been great!

This book was creepy in all the best ways. A perfect fall read. This story is told in a mix of first and third person narration from multiple points of view. The narrators voices take you into the story and add an extra element of suspense to the listening experience.

Thank you @netgalley and @parkrowbooks for my #gifted audio copy of this book and the chance to review!

Six people head to a cabin for the weekend in the woods, which is secluded and there is a storm rolling in. The storm is so bad they end up not able to leave because of trees crossing the road and heavy rains. What then unfolds is chaos. 😅 This is a family drama at its finest including deep roots and DNA matching.

Told from multiple POV’s I found myself constantly guessing who I could believe. Loved how Unger kept me guessing about if I could truly trust the best friend, why the host was always just a bit too present and creepy, what was the real deal behind the huge high powered tech mogul brother and just really could she trust her husband? And what about the spooky history of the cabin itself?

What was supposed to be a fun weekend filled with rest and relaxation was anything but that! I loved the family drama, the fast pace and surprising plots twists. I certainly did not have this one figured out. The events in my opinion are far fetched so hard to believe this could happen exactly as it’s laid out but it didn’t stop me from enjoying this crazy story! I just love locked room thrillers!

A solid 3.5 rounded up to a 4!

A secluded cabin for friends, family, ex-lovers and an odd caretaker to hang out for the weekend? What could go wrong???

A LOT apparently, and what follow is a wild romp thru the dangers of shared history, the imprint left by the past and questioning... always questioning... who you can trust!

While at some points I felt the narrative was disingenuous to the ending, I did really enjoy the ride and it's outcome!

As I recieved the audiobook for this story, a note on the narrator. At first, I found her a bit distracting, being a VERY deliberate reader. After speeding it way up to 2.25x, I really enjoyed her nuanced reading and characterizations.

My thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

A luxurious, secluded cabin in the woods sounds like the perfect getaway for 3 couples, especially when it’s all paid for, right?! Wrong. Dead wrong.

-Locked room mystery
-Secrets + Family Drama
-Revenge
-Atmospheric + Creepy
-Genealogy

In the plot, we have two stories being told simultaneously and they bridge together at the end. This was a classic, eerie, locked room mystery with impressive unreliable narrators. However, the lackluster motive didn’t thrill me and the (unexpected) reveal wrapped up too quickly. I would’ve loved MORE from the story.

Trigger: sexual assault

Rating: 3.75 ⭐️

Thank you @netgalley and @parkrowbooks for my #gifted advanced copy!

The narrator was perfectly fine, but the novel felt a bit chaotic. I would have preferred if it stayed a locked-room thriller rather than jumping back and forth in time as often as it did.

Lisa Unger does it again. A great mystery that really has you wondering who is behind the madness happening at this cabin in the woods. A unique approach of DNA testing ultimately exposes a monster, but will it be who you think?
Great characters, fantastic story line. I did this on audio and although the narrator did a good job, she often sounded robotic almost. Wether this was an issue with recording or in the reading itself, I may recommend the paper version over the audio.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Audio for the opportunity to listen to this prepublication book in exchange for an honest review!

Who else loves books where are stuck in the middle of nowhere in bad weather? What about rich people behaving badly? Such a good combination right!

Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six tells the story of three couples renting a luxury cabin for the weekend when a horrendous storm hits and people start disappearing.

This book is fast moving, engaging, and has a super atmospheric setting. I listened to the audiobook is one day and couldn’t put it down. There did seem to be a few too many characters at times, but it all came together by the end with a satisfying ending!

All in all, I enjoyed this one! Four stars!

Thank you, NetGalley and Harper Audio, for this terrific audiobook! Secluded Cabin Sleep Six is available November 8!

A summer get away with family and friends for 3 couples in a beautiful secluded cabin then a storm hits hard.
This book has several characters throughout and within the pager of the story are all intertwined.
The question which is stronger, DNA or the choices one makes.
I truly enjoy Lisa Unger’s writing and Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is up there as one of my favorites.

I typically wait and read my ARCs and ALCs closer to their pub date, but this one was so high up on my list that I couldn't help but dive in early. The entire premise sounded right up my alley! An atmospheric thriller set in a cabin in the woods. Sign me right the hell up!!! 🙌

Well friends -- it did NOT disappoint!
This was a multiple-POV with a fairly large cast. We go back and forth in time, as the past lays the foundation for the present. I was hooked from the first chapter!

Things really get interesting when three of our couples rent an isolated cabin in the woods for a getaway. Everything seems OK at first, but things aren't always what they seem. A storm hits and they're trapped... Will they all get out alive? Who among them has more sinister plans? I couldn't listen fast enough to see what would happen next! 😱

The narrator, Vivienne Leheney, did such a great job, and really elevated the story for me! It's a long one, at over 12 hours, but it flew by as I was so entranced. Phenomenal performance. 👏

Thank you Harper Audio & Harlequin Audio for my gifted ALC in exchange for my honest review. 💕

Okay, so I absolutely adore Unger’s writing! This unputdownable and super engaging thriller was the perfect start to spOOktober! I love a good privileged people behaving badly story, and this one had very few characters with redeeming qualities... It will definitely have you thinking some deep thoughts about DNA vs environment and biological vs found family.

What to expect:
•Creepy secluded setting
•Multiple POVs
•Fast pace
•Converging storylines
•Surprising plot twists

My issue with this one is that the multiple jumping around storylines and POVs made it hard to follow at times. It’s all pretty far fetched … but isn’t that what makes fiction fun!!?? I had a blast reading this one!

The narration was really soooo good. Each storyline had it’s own separate vibe, which helped to keep all the POVs straight!

This book was fairly entertaining to listen to, but ultimately felt just OK to me. I think I've just been reading too many thrillers where the same types of things happen and then the conclusion is ultimately kind of "out there" since it can't be obvious and needs to be twisty in some way. If you love this formula and are a big thriller fan, I think this will be your kind of book!

Three couples (Hannah and her husband, Hannah's brother Mako and his wife, and Hannah's friend Cricket and her new boyfriend) are vacationing in a cabin for a weekend. Of course, a storm is on its way just as they arrive, threatening the loss of electricity and phone service. We quickly learn of a lot of dysfunction among the friend group: cheating, past relationships, childhood trauma, and more.At the same time we're hearing about the couples' trip, we get another storyline about a young boy named Henry whose mother dies. As the story goes on, he grows up and is still working to determine what happened to his mother and if someone killed her. The storylines will intercept eventually, but for most of the book, they feel quite separate.

Ultimately, the ending had me rolling my eyes a bit, but I also understand why the author wrapped it up the way she did. If you want an entertaining read that may not be super memorable, but is a fairly decent thriller, check this one out!

This audiobook was hard for me to get through. I’m not sure if it’s the recording or the narrator but the narration bothered me. I think it might have hit better read instead of listened to.
There are multiple viewpoints to keep track of and some of them weren’t necessary which kind of bogged the story down. There were also a few too many diverging storylines to keep up which seemed superfluous. It was a 3/5 for me.

What do you get when you mix a very secluded cabin, six friends/family, a creepy chef, a very odd host and one heck of a storm brewing? You get one fantastically, well written, edge of your seat ride! Twists, turns and more secrets than you can shake a stick at. One hell of a wild ride!

Three couples in a deluxe remote cabin with a storm on the way -- in more ways than one. There is the threatening weather outside and the even more ominous secrets within the cabin. Lisa Unger sets us up with a bunch of unclaimed DNA test under the Christmas tree. Who will take the test? Who will throw it in the trash? What will be revealed and shake the family tree? A timely reminder of the dangers that lurk in our modern technology. Are we giving up too much and expecting too little? This one kept me guessing for the most part and it was entertaining on audio.

A big thanks to Parker Audio and NetGalley for an audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fun read with lots of great twists and turns. The story flips back and forth through time as we see the picture come together and see how some of the characters we've been reading about in the flashbacks fit into the present mystery. It's a timely story as well, incorporating DNA and genealogy throughout. Lots of fun and highly recommend if you enjoy suspense/thrillers! Thank you to Harper Audio and NetGalley for the ARC!

This is a perfectly told, remote, high tension, isolated thriller/mystery that keeps the reader both intrigued and on edge. Lisa Unger is a great storyteller with complex characters who we feel well immersed and invested in. Surprises and high tension throughout, SECLUDED CABIN SLEEPS SIX delivers.
Really GREAT narration!

I absolutely adore a locked room thriller and this was no exception. This was my first read by Lisa Unger and it did not disappoint. There are dual timelines and multiples POVs, but Unger seamlessly weaves them together to create an interesting and spine-tingling suspense.

Hannah’s brother, Mako, has decided to rent an extravagant “cabin” in the woods in honor of Hannah’s birthday. But this just seems to be another excuse for Mako to show off his extreme wealth. Invited to the cabin are the most important people in Mako and Hannah’s lives: Mako’s beautiful yogi wife Lisa who doesn’t feel like she fits in with Mako’s family, Hannah’s husband Bruce who has been working as a consultant for Mako’s tech firm but has worries about the integrity of the company, Hannah’s best friend and Mako’s ex-girlfriend Cricket who is still hung up on Mako after all these years, and Cricket’s new boyfriend Joshua who is a mystery to the rest of the group. With each guest carrying secrets of their own, the weekend at a secluded cabin is sure to be an eventful one.

In addition to our main cast of characters there are also several other characters that are followed in the novel. The first being Henry who we follow along from childhood to adulthood and the second being the owner of the cabin who has a creepy side hobby. You’ll wonder how all of the characters relate to each other until the very end where everything is finally revealed.

I really liked the multiple POVs. Stories with multiple POVs can go very wrong, but I think it worked really well in this novel. I listened to the audiobook and I worried that I wouldn’t be able to follow along with all the characters (it’s much easier when actually reading), but I actually didn’t have much trouble. Henry had a very detailed back story, but some of the other characters could have maybe used a little more character development. Regardless, I think all of their back stories were melded together very well.

There is a lot going on this story – trouble within all of these relationships, a potential danger to the group, a deadly storm, a dark history of the cabin, etc. Somehow I didn’t feel overwhelmed with all of this though. It was a good combination of suspenseful and spooky despite some plot points being a little predictable. Despite those instances, there was a lot to keep you guessing until the very end.

I should give a couple trigger warnings, however. Some themes in this book include sexual assault, verbal abuse, and toxic masculinity.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It kept me on my toes and I thoroughly enjoyed the rollercoaster ride until the very end! If you like locked room mysteries, creepy secluded cabins, and a family mystery then this one is for you!

Thank you to Harper Audio, Harlequin Audio and to NetGalley for an ARC of this book.

This was a book I picked out on a whim. I have never read anything by this author before and saw that the audiobook was available so I requested it.

This book had me hooked from the first chapter. I didn't know what was going on, and even though the author gave little clues through out, I still was unsure right up to the end. I loved this as an audiobook.

This book was a great read for this time of year. Its spooky and keeps you guessing. I will definitely be recommending this one!
