I enjoyed this read, and the pages quickly flew. I do like a Harvey Girl story, and this one did not disappoint!
We begin this story in 1889 in Charleston, SC, with a young woman Sophia Fairfield lived a life of wealth. Did she know how to cook? or serve? No, but when her life takes a turn she takes refuge in Las Vegas NM, and we are there as she learns many life lessons.
In the end will Sophia find love, or will the powers that be make her marry a questionable older man?
There is danger, plotting, and a bit of sweet romance. We are there as the trains arrive, and patrons are quickly severed, with the direction of the cup showing your preference, and meals are served with precision. We go on and meet some of the personalities behind the scenes, making for a page turning read!
Looking forward to the next book in this series!

Loved the Harvey Girls aspect of the story. Sophia's strength and dependence on God was encouraging. Prescott and Kane was a little love the top in their schemes. Enjoyable story.

I was very happy to discover that this was a Harvey house novel! I love anything concerning this subject!
I thought this was a cute read with Sophia as the lead protagonist.
I enjoyed getting to know her and I loved her personality.
I also appreciated the secondary characters too. I really liked some of them too.
There are some wonderful inspirational messages that I very much appreciated.
Here is an example of one;
"I'm not even afraid out here in the Wild West because I know that I'm under the protection of the Lord Jesus. I know that Jesus loves me for me and not who my family is or what I can bring to a marriage.
This should apply to anything you do not just marriage.
Fear is one's worst enemy. It makes people not able to be who they want to be at times.
Didn't care much for the bad guys but without them there wouldn't be a story or lessons to teach.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves historical Christian fiction.
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

It reminds me of first of the movie fiddler on the roof. The daughter really doesn't want to marry the guy.
Sophia decided to go to New Mexico to.start over.she went to start a new job there to become a waitress that is her new job.
Carver came to see Sophia where she lives she even had to tell someone who he was he was her ex fiancee son. His name was carver and he likes Sophia.
Carver asked Sophia to marry him and of course she said yes. It just made sense they were Fallin in love with one another.

With this intriguing, romantic read, Ms. Hitchcock kicks off her Aprons and Veils series. Set in 1899 in Charleston, Las Vegas, and New Orleans, this story grabbed me from the beginning and held me fast all the way to the satisfying ending. The well-structured, multi-layered plot flows fluidly with some surprises along the way. The well-drawn characters are diverse—some I loved (especially the charming hero and heroine Carter and Sophia), some I did not care for at all, and some I changed my mind about in the end. I love stories featuring the pioneering Harvey Girls. I was delighted with the way Ms. Hitchcock used her extensive research and excellent writing skills to bring alive the world of the Harvey Girls and the historical Castaneda Hotel, thus adding authenticity to this fictional tale. Wonderfully unfolding, sweet romance and an encouraging faith thread complete the enjoyment of the read. I loved this story and highly recommend it especially for inspirational historical romance fans. I look forward to the next book in the series.

THE FINDING OF MISS FAIRFIELD is the first novel in the Aprons and Veils series by GRACE HITCHCOCK and I cannot wait for the sequel! It is a well written book with a strong and exciting story set in 1899, as we follow Sophia Fairfield from her Charlston family home where she is trapped by society and her father’s rigid rules, to Las Vegas wherevshe works as a Harvey Girl. and then to New Orleans, as she strives to evade her father’s avaricious business partner, Prescott Payne, who she has been promised to in marriage by her father.
When she disappears, Prescott’s stepson Carver Ashton, who knows his stepfather’s true character and who has fallen in love with Sophia, sets off to find her and claim her as his bride.
Sophia enjoys her work at thr hotel, but falls prey to jealousy because of her obvious wealth, and one thing leads to another…..
I like to see the formerly pampered young woman stand up and be counted, showing incredible strength and trust in the Lord, as she overcomes fear. As Carver says admiringly of her, “You are stronger than your family thinks.”
I highly recommend The Finding of Miss Fairfield to anyone who enjoys inspirational Christian historical romance.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Valmont House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

"The Finding of Miss Fairfield", by Grace Hitchcock, is the first in the "Aprons & Veils' series. This particular book centers around the titular Sophia Fairfield, a young lady whose father is marrying her off to a much older man in order to improve his business holdings. The man's stepson, Carver, is tasked with 'chaperoning" her and sparks begin to fly. Sophia tries to change her father's mind, but all is hopeless. On the eve of her wedding, she runs away to the West to become a Harvey Girl waitress. Carver begins his quest to find her and prove to her that true love really does exist.

I enjoyed the historical aspects of this book, and appreciated the courage that Sophia displayed. I wish there had been more chemistry between Sophia and Carver. Also, the side plot about Kane and Norah (?) made things a little more complicated than necessary. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

If a clean, predictable, suspenseful romance is what you desire this story is for you. I liked the historical glimpse into life as a Harvey House girl of West during 1900s. Yet the story was predictable, and as the novel progressed it became extremely far-fetched. Well-written if you like this sort of story, yet not for me. Thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy.
