This is a very complete book with a wealth of information about sourdough, its history, health benefits, vocabulary. In fact, it is almost a treaty on sourdough. The recipes are well explained and cover the making of the starter and a variety of bread recipes. It also has spiked dough recipes as well as a gluten free starter and bread recipe. It is also nice to find a number of ideas of what to make with the starter discard, as it seems always a pity to throw it away. It is a cookbook without pictures, which is very unusual and some pictures would have been helpful to show how starter should look like for example. But it remains easy to follow for sourdough bakers of all levels.

*** I have received and read an e – ARC from NetGalley in exchange for honest feedback. All thoughts and opinions are my own.***

Part of my reason for loving cookbooks is looking at the pictures. Unfortunately, other than the cover photo, there was not a single picture to be found.

The recipes looked interesting, but I already have most of them from other cookbooks (or Pinterest). I saw nothing new or original.

Overall, I would give this book 3/5 stars, not great but not terrible, as it would be a decent book for someone new to baking sourdough bread. For more advanced bakers, I would recommend a different book.

This informative cookbook covers everything from the history of sourdough baking and its health benefits to the terminology often found in sourdough baking books.

The baking section begins with making your own sourdough starter. Several types of starters are covered, including a gluten free version, which I plan to try for myself. It then moves on to breads, pizzas, pies, buns, and crackers before continuing to other baked goods and sweet treats that can be made using your established starter. The book is very informative and gives lots of ideas for using your starter in a variety of interesting ways.

Being an avid sourdough baker, I really enjoyed the author's explanations and uses of the starter culture, beyond bread, Where the book fell short for me was in the lack of photographs, Other than the cover, there is not a single photograph in the book, Having baked sourdough for years, this would not deter me from adding this book to my collection but for someone new to sourdough baking, I think photos of the processes or finished products would have been an asset.

If you do not need the photos and you are interested in learning more about sourdough bread and baking, this is a great resource for your cookbook collection.

Thank you to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for the opportunity to review an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.

One of our New Years resolutions this year was to bake sourdough from scratch - including starting our own starter… so when I saw this book I was really excited!

Great information on history and step by step instructions. Really appreciate the ARC!

Sourdough baking became very popular during the pandemic, and it's always fun to get some new ideas and tips. I enjoyed reading through sourdough, although this is definitely a book that I'd prefer in print to flip through. But i greatly appreciate the opportunity of an ARC- thank you!

This book on sourdough is a basic cookbook with instructions for how to bake with sourdough. Though the recipes can be good, there was still a lot that didn't really inspire me -- like the lack of photos and having measures only in grams. The sweet recipes used sourdough discard and weren't properly fermented. But this could be an informative, good cookbook for someone I'm sure, even though it wasn't for me.

A big thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This was an interesting read-I am a beginner, so lots of interesting facts. Enjoyed all the photos and helpful hints. Now if I just had a kitchen-to test these out. Maybe one day. 4 stars

The formatting of the ebook leaves much to be desired, however I’m looking forward to trying out some of the recipes and the book itself is very informative.

This book on sourdough unfortunately has little new to offer. The measurements are all in American cups which wouldn’t suit an international audience.. Many of the techniques are now outmoded including discarding the starter. Not a book for my shelf

I was looking for a book to show me how to make sour dough and this explains everything you would possibly need to know.

The only issue I have with it is that everyone in cups and I'm in the UK so we would use grams. I can use a converter to over come this thought.

I'm looking forward to making all these delicious breads

What's better than homemade sourdough bread?

Sourdough by Mary Lo Caso is a very comprehensive recipe book. I made sourdough bread with starter for years, until I lost my starter because of a cross country move once. I was never able to find a recipe to make a new starter (no internet back then!), so I am thrilled to be able to try this again. I am amazed at the amount of items that can be made from sourdough starter! I had no idea. All I have ever made from it was bread, dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls and pizza dough. I never realized you could make cake, cookies, waffles, pancakes, pie dough, muffins, crackers, tortillas, pita bread and more... Wow! I want to try them all. I can’t wait to get started.

Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for this free eARC.

Some interesting receipes that I would try. It would have been good to have pictures to see what the bakes should look like and as a Brit it would have been good to have measurements in grams and not cups to be sure that I have the exact measurement.

Lots of good, useful information here. I'm still not sure I can keep a starter alive, but this makes it feel a bit more doable.

Thank you for the opportunity to read Sourdough by Mary Lo Caso. After many failed attempts at sourdough, this book has given me some good ideas and recipes to try again. I only wish there was pictures too

What a great discovery ! After a lockdown fail attempt to make my own sourdough, I thought this book could be a good start to my new attempt. It is well explained and with a lot of different bread recipe. Really make me want to try and succeed this time ! My only issue with this book is that there is no picture (at least within the ARC). Looking at what the sourdough might look like at the different step of the feeding will help quite a lot. And having some nice pictures of the differents bread might be more appealing. Otherwise I want to try it !
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC.

A great book focusing on sourdough. I loved the depth of information and the variety of recipes for both bread and other baked items.
The first chapter is All About Sourdough - history, benefits, terminology. Then a chapter on Sourdough Starters - maintaining, feeding, and tips. Recipes are in chapters on Sourdough Bread for Every Taste; Pizza, Pies, Tortillas, and Pitas; Breadsticks, Buns, Biscuits, and Crackers; Quick Breads and Muffins; and Sweet Treats. Other than the breads chapter, probably about 40 - 50% of the recipes utilize discard.
The book makes me feel confident I could make any of these items. I do wish there were some photos included, but the entire book is black and white text.

If you are interested in sourdough, and want to understand the history and mechanics behind it, this book is very helpful!

Good recipes, including alternate uses to bread you can make from the sourdough "discard", definitely worth the read!

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!

As someone who has made sourdough for years, I would throw this book in the trash. I had hope after reading the brief history and benefits of sourdough. I like how the author took the time to define the terms used in bread baking. However, as soon as I got to the starter section, I knew this book was done for. First, you don't need several different starters. While yes, they can impart different flavors depending on the grain you're using, there really is no need. Next issue... volume for measurements. Everyone measures differently and if you're trying to create a 100% hydration starter, using volume is NOT the way to go. The directions for the "all-purpose" starter never mention discarding at all. Just to continue to add flour and water over the course of 5 days. I really hope you have a large container, oh and what a waste. Plus, 5 days? Really? Sure under perfect conditions you might have an active starter that doubles in size after 5 days, and you might get a good rise when making a pan loaf. Realistically, you should think of doubling that, if not longer. If you're house is perpetually on the chilly side, it will take longer still. Finally, I didn't get past the first two or three recipes as I was just utterly disappointed.
If you really want to learn how to make sourdough, this is NOT the book to do so. If you want to make "sourdough" a long the lines of the various "no knead" bread baking books that really popular a few year back, then maybe you should get this book.
