Awful. Just awful.

The writer brought me into the story. It was a clever and interesting series of events.

But then it wasn't.

It was tedious and done before.

Thank you to Netgalley, Dreamscape Media, and Daniel Hurst for an advance listening copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review! This was my first book by Daniel Hurst but it will definitely not be my last. The Boyfriend had me engrossed in the story right away and I couldnt stop listening until I found out what happened! I enjoyed the multiple POVs that we got in the story between our main character and her stalker/secret admirer. I love a book that makes you second guess other characters and their motives and I found myself doing just that throughout the whole story. The narrator did an excellent job bringing the story to life with their voice and thats no easy feat. This is a must read for an thriller lover and will be available on 8/23/22!!

A very quick read that provides a twist ending. As a reader you think you know the "whodunnit" but then it flips at the end. Adele has finally found her soulmate in Tom. They are engaged and planning their wedding. But then Adele's ex-boyfriends are dying one after the other. Accidental deaths? Initially they appear to be accidental, but soon Adele and the police begin to believe the men, who are dying in the order she dated them are being murdered. Believing that Tom will be the final victim, Adele tries to find the killer herself (while doing some heavy drinking). The premise is that her many boyfriends start ending up dead. Like a lot. She attends the first funeral, catches up with old friends, and, of course, doesn’t tell fiance Tom because he gets jealous. Of going to a funeral for a dead ex. Ok. Red flag ladies. Adele finds his jealousy endearing because that shows he loves her. A parade of red flags right here. A thrilling and tense story that keeps you turning the pages to find out what is going on. The book is really well written and there are a range of interesting characters that you can't help but suspect. The conclusion was shocking and exciting. Definitely recommended, another great book by Daniel Hurst.

Thank you to the publisher "Inkubator Books" and Netgalley as well as the author.

Book Title: The Boyfriend
Author: Daniel Hurst
Audiobook Narrators: Lorna Bennett and Chris Devon
Publisher: Dreamscape Media
Genre: Mystery Thriller
Pub Date: August 23, 2022
My Rating: 2 Stars ~ Disappointing Audio

Adele is engaged to Tom, the love of her life and also her sixth boyfriend. When planning her wedding, Adele gets notified about the death of an ex. She soon discovers that ALL of her ex boyfriends have died.
Is there a series killer after ALL of Adele’s boyfriends? Is Tom next?

Story sounded interesting however the audiobook was a struggle.
We audiobook fans know that the narrator can make or break a good story.
In this case, the female narrator’s voice was grating on my nerves. I found Adele unlikeable and wasn’t sure if it was the character or the narrator.
I liked the cover but it was difficult for me to believe the attractive gal on the cover was Adele who was typically drunk.

I hung in there but it did not get any better.
I didn't have a clue 'whodunit' but it wasn't shocking!.
I will read another author, Daniel Hurst novel but will stay clear of this audiobook performer.

Want to thank NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for this early eGalley.

Adele has had a lot of fun playing the field, but she’s finally ready to settle down with the man of her dreams. As these things usually go in the world of fiction, a problem pops up. What problem, you ask? Well, all of her exes are dying and she’s pretty sure she’s somehow involved.
This book was good. I felt invested in the story and unraveling the plot, but I didn’t love the ending twist. It felt random instead of clever.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape for my ALC in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this narrator

Admittedly I thought the premise sounded a bit lame and lifetime movie… but it was intriguing and not hokey. I’m a little tired of the fall down drunk narrator, and the ex boyfriend with a 20 year vendetta was hard to believe (I was hoping it was all just coincidental in the end and she got help for her drinking) but I did enjoy it.

This was the second thriller I've read by Daniel Hurst and I have to say I didn't enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed The Promotion. There were many aspects to this that I found compelling but the ending just really threw me for a loop and felt too random and with few ties to the main storyline to shock me. The ending just felt too convenient in a way. There were multiple red herrings in this to throw you off the scent and make you believe several other characters could be the murderer so when the actual murderer is revealed is feels a bit melodramatic and disappointing in my opinion. I think I would have given then 4 stars if it weren't for my lack of love for the ending. The story itself is pretty fast paced and fairly light despite the subject matter. I liked the main character but would have liked Tom's character to be a bit more developed because it felt like we barely knew him still by the end. Daniel Hurst has a good writing style and has all the makings for a great thriller but the ending just fell a bit flat for me. I still look forward to his next release, however. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. I find it follows the author's pattern. Sounds good, parts are good, parts are slow, some twists, some things predictable. It wasn't bad. The cops were super annoying and frustrating. The main character has a drinking problem, but wants to still blame everyone else for her drinking. I don't understand how these two stayed together. However, I did not guess who the killer was.

It was hard to care what happened to these characters. The main character is obnoxiously clueless and not very sympathetic. Her fiance is a colossal jerk. The answer to this murder was incredibly obvious. Sorry, but I really can't recommend this one.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.

Adele never dreamed of getting married until she met Tom. She was in her late 30s and had a string of boyfriends in her past. Her and her best friend Nicolette we’re so excited about her upcoming wedding. During one of their binge drinking wedding powwows Nicolette gets a text that Adele‘s first boyfriend Sean has committed suicide. She hasn’t spoke to him in years, but still it feels like a loss and she even attend his funeral. It isn’t until a couple more of a boyfriend have“Accidental deaths“ that Adele receives a text but let her know none of her boyfriend debts were accidental. Can she stop whoever is doing this before they get to her sweet farm or will it only in with his death? Adele is beside herself and thanks to her persistence in getting detective brown to help her that the killer even gets found out in the end. This was a great book I thought the narration was great the story moved along swiftly and kept you interested. Adele is definitely in over drinker and what a story it is! I highly recommend this book if you love thrillers and whodunits you definitely will want to read the boyfriend by Daniel hurst. I listen to the audiobook and I loved it! I received this book from net Gally and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review but all opinions are definitely my own.h

3.5 stars

This one was a nice, fast-paced little thriller, but it could’ve been even better. As with so many stories in this genre, I find that the ending kind of makes or breaks the experience; in this case, I felt the ending was pretty predictable.

*spoiler alert below*

I actually thought (and hoped) that the killer was going to be the current best friend, rather than a random spurned (almost) lover; in my view, that outcome would’ve been even better, and there was a lot of potential for how the story could’ve been wrapped up…it could’ve taken things in a different, intriguing direction. Anyway, it didn’t happen like that, and it was fine.

Overall, the book was pretty good, and I’m pretty sure I have another one from the writer on my list of upcoming TBRs.

The Boyfriend
Daniel Hurst
Adele and Nicola were at a bar when Adele finds out an old boyfriend from high school has hung himself. He had a family, a wife and children, why would he do such a thing? She goes home to her fiancé, Tom. While he isn’t happy to see her drunk, he tries to be understanding. Adele attends the funeral and once again gets drunk. (I’ve never been to a funeral where there is a bar.) When she arrives home, she finds out another ex-boyfriend has died this time it was a car crash. She receives a suspicious message that could be from the killer. She goes to the police with her fears. She explains that her ex-boyfriends are dying, and in the order, she dated them. At first the police do not seem to take her seriously. Then there is another death.
I found this audio book difficult to listen to. I did not like any of the characters in this tale, not even Adele. Adele had a head injury when she was in high school; she has never been able to remember what happened. It left her with severe migraines. She is an alcoholic and at thirty-six years old is still very immature and makes terrible decisions. Adele isn’t a nice person, and neither is her best friend, Nicola. Nicola leads Adele to make bad decisions; she also is an alcoholic. Adele’s fiancé Tom is very controlling perhaps it is because of Adele’s alcoholism or her childishness, for whatever reason he isn’t likeable. He comes across as jealous but maybe it is just concern over her drinking. The relationship with her ex-girlfriend keeps coming which seemed useless to me. The premise of this tale had great potential but it falls short of my expectations.

The Boyfriend by Daniel Hurst

Adele is finally happy she is engaged to Tom and life couldn't be better right! Well think again all of a sudden someone is killing Adele previous boyfriends in order that she dated them. There are six including Tom. Adele is out with a girlfriend when she gets news of the first boyfriend she ever had in high school was killed by suicide.

The first boyfriend being killed felt like a one off but then boyfriend number two and then three died in suspicious ways. Anyways Adele decides to take matters into her own hands she doesn't want Tom to be killed so she needs to figure out who is doing this.

Anyways there is an instance when Adele was a teen where she was knocked in the head and she lost conscious. This is a very suspenseful mystery that keeps you turning the pages. This would freak anyone out if someone started killing off people you dated. So if you are a fan of suspense and mystery this book is for you it will feed you.

Lorna Bennett and Chris Devon narrated this story and did great giving each character there voice. It was easy to follow along. This was a solid four star read for me.

Thank You to Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for a free audio copy of this book for an honest review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Sigh. That was really stupid.

I was in the mood for a good mystery and I liked the idea of all this woman's ex-boyfriends turning up dead. Sounded good enough to me. However, the events leading up to these deaths were dumb and not well thought out. At the big reveal, I could feel my eyes rolling so hard to the back of my head.

Maybe I need to give mysteries a little break for a while because I am just not finding what I need.

The premise of the story is such an interesting concept, however, the story falls completely flat. Adele is insufferable and immature. From the get go she thinks that everything is all about her and has zero thought for anyone else. She's obsessed with how everything affects her, with no sympathy for loved ones of the victims. I found her extremely unlikable.

Tom & Adele's relationship is chock full of red flags. They are toxic to each other and I hated every single interaction between them.

The story is very disjointed, jumping back and forth in time, adding in very important details almost as an afterthought. Confusing all around.

Thank you NetGalley for a copy of The Boyfriend in exchange for my honest review. I must say I definitely enjoyed The Boyfriend. Every time I thought I had it all figured out something would happen and change my mind. I felt for Adele through the whole ordeal. From trying to get people to believe she wasn't just out of her mind to trying to figure out what on earth is going on while trying to protect the people she once loved. It was a wild ride for sure.

Blindsided.

I don’t think I could have guessed the ending if I tried. It kinda came out of nowhere and I very much enjoyed it. I tried to figure it out along the way and failed. I was so convinced I knew the twist from the beginning, but nope.

A very fast paced thriller that will keep you guessing until the end. I only wish for a little more to the ending once it’s all revealed.

Thanks so much NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the advances audiobook copy.

Thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest review! However, this was a DNF for me, I could NOT get through this but mostly because of the narrators featured in the audiobook release, they were awful, over actors! It was painstaking to listen to, I wish I could have read this instead but I couldn’t get through more than 20 mins.

I like author Daniel Hurst, and will read anything with his name on it. He’s got the skill to entertain a reader. The Boyfriend was a good book, a solid 3 for 1) keeping the reader listening and 2) providing an interesting scenario. It wasn’t one of my favorites from him though because no matter how hard I tried, I just did not care for the main character Adele. She’s presented as a not yet mature 30 something who, despite having a fiance at home, LOVES to go out and get drunk. A lot. She talks about this too and how she should grow up. At the very least, she should respect her partner and tell him when she plans to be out till the early hours and come home plastered. Repeatedly.

Fast forward through the next and the next getting killed. A red herring which did fool me (so congrats Hurst), but by the end, I no longer cared who ended up dead.

I listened to the audiobook which releases 8/23/22 (the paper version released in 2021) and I felt the dual narrators Lorna Bennett and Chris Devon did fine jobs voicing each character.
