Overall I thought this story was super funny and unexpected. I tend to like all the cliff hanger chapters and left field situations the characters where thrown in. I will say it did read like on run on sentence however. Almost too much character background rather than focusing on what is actually going on.

A quirky mystery that is entertaining in a unique and fun way. You have to like dry wit with a touch of sarcasm to enjoy this book and it definitely worked for me. It did start out slow for me, but once I got into the rhythm of the writing and started connecting with the characters then it really fell into place for me. The main character, Richard, was a bit of a hapless tag-a-long at times, but eventually pulled his weight even if accidentally. I am actually quite looking forward to the next book in the series to see how things turn out for Richard and Valerie, if she ends up sticking around and oh, I do hope she does! I think she is good for Richard!

Death and Croissants is a blast of a mystery, perfect for fans of The Thursday Murder Club. We find our protagonist Richard living a perfect ordinary life running a quiet B&B in France until he is unexpectedly thrown into the midst of a murder mystery. Such a delight to read.

Amazing story to read. Abostly loved it. Couldn't put it down. Might reread it next year. 5 star book

A quirky cozy murder mystery with an equally quirky set of characters. And the main character Richard is a middle-aged film buff in a midlife crisis. Seriously, this man and his thoughts are an entire mood, and I'm up for the British humor. The writing is quite whimsical and over-the-top, owing to Richard's tendency to dramatize things like in the movies.

The mystery is fun, but it only climaxes at the end when everything is revealed. For most of the book, Richard is relatively clueless and slow on the uptake as though he's just there for the experience. Which is true enough. Similar to another reviewer's thoughts, I didn't get the urge to drop the book at any time, but it wasn't much of a compelling page-turner. For a good portion of his book, we're just there to listen to Richard's midlife crisis thoughts and his pitiful attempts to assert dominance over his life. But again, the British humor makes up for it although it's not for everyone.

I should probably note that as your average middle-aged man, Richard has quite the traditional and conservative mindset. He thinks many things that can be considered stereotyping and somewhat controversial nowadays. He's pretty self-aware though. Was a bit of a shock at the start but learned to turn my brain off and enjoy the book for what it is.

I requested this hoping that it would be like The Thursday Murder Club and it wasn't but the more I got into this book the less I cared about that. The characters are funny and real and the writing is wonderful! definitely recommended

British ex-pat Richard has a B&B in the Loire Valley in France where there might have been a murder. He, his guests and his cleaning lady set out to unravel the mystery.

It's a cosy mystery with quirky characters and a lot of obvious clichés used for comic relief. The story takes some twists and turns that have no more obvious reason as to give the reader more time with the quirky characters.

To sum it up, a perfect palate cleanser after a more 'substantial' read, but too cosy and quirky for me to actually enjoy.

I love cozy mysteries so when I saw this on NetGalley I had to request! I found this book to be a little slow going at times but other than that I enjoyed this book. The humor was fun and it does exactly what it says on the tin it truly is a cozy mystery. Its short which isn't something you often see with mysteries but i felt it was appropriate! Its a good short read but to me but it wasn't anything mind blowing unfortunately

I had a pretty heart time getting into this book, and am sad to say I did not completely finish it. I didn’t like the writing style, and I didn’t like the characters. Overall, this book just wasn’t for me.

I found this a very humorous story. I loved Richard, the main character with his love of old movies and chickens. I must admit I did get confused with the plot a few times. It's very pacy and it's not amazing but it's well worth a read.

So the book started off well; they story was exciting and the writing was witty and funny. But then, around the second half, something changed—I don't know if it was me losing interest or something with the writing, but it just became such a chore for me to pick it up again.

At fifty-three, Richard Ainsworth, a former film historian, only wants to lead a quiet life running his bed-and-breakfast in France's Loire Valley. His daughter is married, and he and his wife are separated. When his housekeeper informs him Monsieur Vincent Grandchamps, a guest, is missing, and there is a bloody handprint on the wall, Richard moans that these kind of things are not supposed to happen to him. But, another guest, Valerie d'Orcay, is excited. The widow is bored and looking for excitement, so she's eager to search for the missing man. She enlists a hesitant Richard to help with her search. When they learn the missing man is the brother of a local judge, and Vincent has a price on his head with a dangerous couple searching for him, the investigation takes an intriguing turn. Richard is reluctantly caught up in Valerie's drama, until someone kills Ava Gardner, his hen. Now, even the timid Richard is willing to launch a dangerous search for the missing man, because no one messes with his beloved chickens.

The charming mystery, released in 2021 in the U.K., is a fast-paced, witty story for those who enjoy dry British humor.

This read was a wild ride, both in terms of content and in terms of my feelings about it. I thoroughly enjoyed the absurdity of it (mistaken identities! pet chickens! sleuths dragged into sleuthing against their will!), and it was a great change of pace from the dark, intense mysteries I've been reading lately.

However, I found myself losing the storyline at points, and there were several loose ends that never got tied up (who killed Ava Gardner??). Some of the humor landed for me, but there were also lots of attempts at humor that really missed the mark (it's 2022, are we really still using nontraditional relationships as a punchline?).

While not my cup of tea, other readers may find this good fun.

Richard is the owner of a B & B in a imaginary town in the french countryside. His highlight of the day is feeding his hens he is also sort of a movie cinephile. Yes, I could love all that easily.

One day Valerie Dorçay appears on his life and she wants to got fun investigating the disappearance of one of the guest who left a bloody hand print on the paper wall and a broken pair of eye glasses.

Yes he is a very shy humourous men but I didn't quite enjoy the book. The chemistry with Valerie is ok but I found myself thinking if I should finished at all.

But I was here for an honest review. Not quite my cup of cozy mystery. I was hyped because on paper sounds good, that is the argument but it wasn't that good at all.

I gave it three stars but only because I love the setting and the humour. I have trouble getting to the end of it.
