I would like to thank Netgalley and Sapere Books for a review copy of The Wedding Killer, the second novel to feature forensic psychologist turned detective constable Dr Hamlet Mottrell, set in Sheffield.

On his first day in his new job Hamlet is paired with his former nemesis turned close friend, DS Alix Rainbow, to look into the disappearance of student, Hayley Stevenson. It turns out that she had received a series of unsettling calls and an invitation to her own wedding before she disappeared and she wasn’t the first student to receive them.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Wedding Killer, which is an engrossing read with an interesting premise and several unexpected twists. Obviously, the idea of a serial predator stalking and luring away young women isn’t novel but the author puts his own stamp on it and has produced a page turner.

The novel is told from the investigative point of view so there are no hints from the perpetrator about motive or identity. I like this as it allows the reader to guess along, keeps the interest level high and, quite frankly, fictional perpetrators’ thought processes tend to be very similar, so when you’ve read a few it gets tedious. I also like that it links the past to the present in ways I can’t reveal and came as quite a shock to me when I read it. It’s clever.

The novel is full of surprises with unexpected developments and a strengthening of the bond between Hamlet and Alix. The author saves his best twist for the end, and while it didn’t come as a massive surprise (I had an inkling) it was still unexpected in how it was done.

Hamlet and Alix have been through some things in their lives and now both of them have answers to their traumas. I look forward to seeing how the author progresses their characters without the uncertainty of their pasts hanging over their presents.

The Wedding Killer is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

This talented author has woven an intriguing story of mystery and murder...mayhem...love and romance...friendship...I have to admit I guess who the murderer was...even though there were several red herrings, there was a sentence or two that made me think that it had to be that person. Curl up in a comfy chair...light a fire...grab a warm blanket...enjoy the story of these characters...try to discern who did the murders...Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this electronic copy for review. I look forward to more from this gifted author. By the way, this would make a great television series or movie.

A brilliant read. Loved Hamlet and Alix Lauren Katie and Nate. Twisty and tense. I didn’t see that coming. I'm looking forward to the next book. 5*.
