Three Small Bones is book 8 in the Detective Katie Scott series by Jennifer Chase.
I've read a couple of these books out of order and have really loved the ones I've read so far.

The characterization and plot were both expertly handled by this very talented Author.
Katie is a strong female protagonist who also is a likable character.
I love the characters and how well developed they are and the relationships that grow or develop.
The plot is well-developed and had several twists that kept me guessing and quickly turning the pages.
I thought I had it all figured out, but was so wrong.
This story will grab your attention from the very beginning and holds on tight until the very end.
The mystery was handled well and kept you guessing until the satisfying ending.

Jennifer Chase is a talented Author who knows how to write because this was able to keep me so engaged that I didn't want it to end so soon.

I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Three Small Bones’, the eighth in the Detective Katie Scott series written by Jennifer Chase, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

A device is deliberately ignited to destroy the house at 717 Maple Road and as firefighters are dousing the flames they come across three small bones protruding from the compacted earth floor in the cellar and as Detectives Katie Scott and Sean McGaven investigate they come across more bones.

It's good to have Katie, McGaven and K9 Cisco back in ‘Three Small Bones’ as they investigate this new case that has more questions than answers. Although they normally deal with cold cases, the Sheriff has got Katie involved as there are old bones as well as some that are more recent all buried in same grave, and for the first time Katie’s working with her fiancé Chad who’s acting as arson investigator. The story becomes tense with drama, suspense and twists and turns as it becomes clear that whoever’s responsible intends to harm everyone involved from firefighters to crime investigators. This is another exciting book in the series that’s had me reading well past my bedtime, unable to stop reading until I’d reached the final exciting chapters as Katie puts her life at risk to catch the killer. I’m can’t wait to read book number nine.

✨BOOK REVIEW✨
Three Small Bones
By Jennifer Chase

This book, sigh! I wanted to love it, but sadly it was one of those where I just felt like something was missing for me.

I hadn’t realized when I requested this book, that it was the 8th Detective Katie Scott book…..that could have something to do with me not being blown away.

I felt like the characters and I just did not mesh. They felt very one dimensional for me. And the storyline, though enjoyable, felt predictable.

I feel I may have enjoyed this one more if I started from the beginning with the main character.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨/5

Another fast paced suspense read that grips you and doesn't let go. Katie and McGaven are drawn into a complicated and heartbreaking case that also puts them working with Chad for the first time. It adds an interesting element we haven't seen before. I also happen to be a big fan of the little dose of tension that exists because of John. He's one of my favorite characters. I'm never disappointed with a book in this series and this book showcases why. I can't wait for the next one.

This is one of those series that I have dipped in and out of and have always managed to pick up the thread of the goings on.

I must admit I did struggle slightly with the middle of this book it just appeared to be stuck and in some parts it felt over descriptive which just went over my head, having said the ending was nail biting stuff.

Katie is a fab main character and I really enjoy the camaraderie that she has with her team and her right hand dog Ciasco.

When several sets of human remains are discovered in the aftermath of a house fire, Detective Katie Scott races to connect all of the clues together and track down the killer while people around her continue to die.
Fast paced novel, easy read. Recommended for all and reads fine as a stand-alone novel for those not following the Katie Scott books.

Three Small Bones by Jennifer Chase is the eighth book in the Detective Katie Scott series. This is an interesting story. Detective Katie Scott has a tough case on her hands once again. I liked the characters and the storyline well enough but the prose was a little slow and more descriptive than I like.

The first book I have read in this series but good as a stand-alone. A solid four star read. Great premise. Well written. Good characters. Page turner. Plenty of suspense to keep me guessing but I felt the ending a bit rushed. I definitely would read her next novel. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.

After a residential fire, Detective Katie Scott is called to the scene. In the basement, the firefighters have found small bones, that unfortunately lead to much more. The Cross family is found murdered and Katie starts to develop theory, especially when she looks deeper into their landlord. This murder hits Katie closer to home than previous novels... with the victims, her PTSD, and relationships with Chad and her Uncle (who is also her boss). As with all Katie Scott books, Ms. Chase writes an intriguing mystery and fills with with personality, passion, and a deep love for her characters. I can't believe it - but the series just keeps getting stronger... and it was fantastic to start! Thank you to Bookouture for an advanced reader copy of this book. The views expressed are my own.

Three Small Bones - Jennifer Chase

In the darkness of night, a lone figure busily pours accelerant around an old empty home, before setting it ablaze. The house is a total loss when the fire department is done extinguishing the flames, but then, a startling find is made in the basement.

Detective Katie Scott is busily painting the walls of her cottage, while Cisco, her K-9, steals paint brushes and runs through the house in play. She’s a bit torn as she struggles with the decision to sell her home, as she and fiancé Chad plan for their wedding and a life together. Her thoughts are cut short by a phone call – she’s needed at the scene of an arson. A partial skeleton has been found buried in the basement of the destroyed dwelling.

As Kate and her partner McGaven arrive, they are led into the basement where a skeletonized arm is visible above the dirt floor. When forensics finishes the excavation, they find two adult bodies, and shortly thereafter, two children’s bodies are discovered nearby – but one was buried recently, the other appears to have been in the ground much longer – 25 years longer…. Was the fire an unrelated event? Or did someone want those bodies found?

As the team gathers and begins their investigation, they await identification on the bodies. First person on their list of suspects is the landlord. He sets off Katie’s radar right away, but when he winds up dead of an apparent home invasion, the team needs to regroup. Unexpected things start happening to those who were on the scene that day, leading the team to believe that they are being targeted… As Katie and the crew slowly unravel the complexities of the case, it becomes very apparent that someone does not want these murders solved…

I can’t say enough about this series - these books just get better and better. Katie & Cisco are a force to be reckoned with and are fan favorites in this household!! These are books you can pick up without ever skimming the back, because you know they’re going to be that good! Love, love LOVE this series!!

This is another very good read in the Katie Scott series, not forgetting Cisco the dog! The usual standard of excellent writing, a clever plot and plenty suspense for the reader makes it another winner for the author. My only complaint was, the ending left me just a bit disappointed but I would recommend reading the full series. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

This is the eighth book to feature Detective Katie Scott and her partner K9 Cisco and what a read. It starts off with three little bones which are found in the rubble of a house fire in the basement. When sifting through the debris the bones of two bodies are found. They have been buried on top of each other. The more they dig the more they find, a whole family has been killed and buried.. A very strange landlord, a dodgy construction company and a cold case from twenty five years ago. Katie has so many clues and no viable suspects. As the case continues members of her team are being targeted. Someone wants to make this case go away why?? This would have been a five star read but for the ending, I felt it was a bit of an anticlimax after all the tension and suspense. All in all a very entertaining read.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.

Katie Cross, her partner Sean McGaven and the rest of the Pine Valley Sheriff’s Department are left to sort out a mystery when a seemingly abandoned house burns to the ground at 8 in the morning, and bones are found in the basement.

Three Small Bones grabbed me from the very first page! It was so intense, and enthralling. I stayed up until 11pm two nights in a row so I could finish it. Honestly I enjoyed this book so much is convinced me to read the other Katie across books, the characters are well written with depth and backstory that makes you like them.

I've read all the books in this series so far and they keep getting better. The characters are easy to care about and the plots are always different. This one had a few sad parts but the plot moved along fast and before I realised it I had read the entire book. I now need to wait for the next one
