The plot of this book was interesting and I enjoyed the magic system and multiple POVs. I had some issues with the pacing of the book, but overall enjoyed reading it.

Minna wakes up one morning to see small orbs of light in the trees. She finds that this supposedly makes her a witch. She knows that she must live by herself at her own little house. Why is she consider a witch? When her sister Alyn gains spirit sight, Minna assures her that she will never leave her alone. The Inquisition captures Alyn and puts her in prison. She is given a choice that she must choose. She must serve her captors against her people or die. Minna has evaded the inquisition agents and learns the world is not what she though it was. To be able to save Alyn, she must master her spirit song, grab her destiny and a heroine for her people. Will Minna be successful?

The author has written a fantasy that held my attention even though it was a rather long book to read. There is a list of characters and Alle’oss pronunciation, Included is a chapter of “Argren Blue” that predates the time of “Spirit Sight.” I liked reading the first volume of the series “Spirit Song Trilogy.”

An interesting magic system, some likeable and morally grey characters.

The cover gave me self-pub vibes and I’m afraid so does the editing: This book is almost 850 pages long, so it should either be severely edited down, or split in two books. 850 pages is just too long for one book, unless you are writing part 14 of The Wheel of Time, or have made yourself a name already. Then you can get away with that, but starting out as an author? Please stick to length conventions.

There were a lot of characters, and I feel like some of them could have been combined or cut.
It didn’t help that they didn’t really have distinct voices in their POV chapters.
There was only one exception, and only for her first few chapters: we get to Alyn’s POV and she comes across as more sophisticated than her older sister. Given that she’s only eight years old and not well-educated by any means this seems strange. I didn’t notice this difference in her later chapters anymore, but she does act extremely mature for an eight year old, to the point where she became a teenager in my head.
I was a bit confused about the ages of the characters. For some, you never hear how old they are, so when two characters start dating at the end of the book, I went yikes, because given the info I had about them, I assumed one of them was easily over twenty, the other at best fifteen. But since no other character bats an eye at this, I hope I misjudged the older character’s age by several years.

Some mistakes were left in the novel, like this altered bit: She didn’t see B, but when B did X, A’s head snapped in B’s direction, and strode to where the dock met the quay. Her head strode somewhere?

The book deals with racism and religious fantatism quite a bit but I’m still unclear as to how people can tell certain characters’ ethnicity with one look when most of them are described as pale. A couple of times I got the impression it’s about the way they wear their hair and how they dress but if it’s just that, hiding should be comparatively easy?

I think a bit more editing and shortening or splitting into two would have done the book a favour because overall it offers an interesting magic system, several characters struggling with their choices, and a fight against a religious institution I can only support.

Thank you, NetGalley for the advanced copy of Spirt Sight.

I really enjoyed the world building and cast of characters in Spirit Sight. The magic system was incredibly unique and the lore was really interesting.

I am looking forward to the next installment, but have to be honest that I struggled with the pacing of this book. It was a lot all at once and I felt it could have benefited from deeper character development upfront instead of being thrown into various political, religious, and social issues.

Overall this was a good read and I did have fun with it!

It's totally fine, nothing overly special but also not boring. I think it just wasn't for me and I can't fault the book for that.

Thank you NetGalley for a chance to read Spirit Sight.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I loved Minna and Alyn’s character development and the paths they follow in this book. I loved the magic system, the multiple POV’s, the world building, everything. I can’t wait for the next installment.

this was a great start to the Spirit Song Trilogy series, it was what I was looking for when I read this description. I was invested in what was going on in this world and loved meeting the characters. I enjoyed the way Ross Hightower wrote the story and it was a beautifully done fantasy novel. I look forward to the rest of the series and more from Mr. Hightower.

"The weeks since Alyn first saw the spirits were difficult in the Hunter’s home. When their mother emerged from her room, her face had the drawn quality of someone fighting a terrible illness. It was difficult enough for her with Minna nearby. Minna could only guess what she was going through now."
