This was my first C.J. Box novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was easy to get into and follow. It was a fine stand alone book but I would definitely pick up another from the series. I think the setting was well developed, I could picture the Montana landscape and I liked how it played into the story. I do think there are a couple of plot points that were a little overly simplistic and unrealistic but just accepting that I think it was a solid PI novel and a good, compelling story.

As for the narration in the audiobook, the narrator was fantastic but talked pretty slow. I sped it up nearly double and was satisfied with that. She did a great job with differentiating characters without it being hokie. She was emotive and did the characters justice. If you like a good private investigator series that is not too deep but still has a lot of heart, this is your author. I will read more of his books in the future.

Thanks to NetGalley, MacMillan Audio, and St. Martin’s Press for this ARC.

Another great addition to the Cassie saga. I thought this was well written with an interesting plot and great characters. I don't want to give anything away, but the twist of who is responsible for the treasure is a really good one! The narrator does a great job bringing this story to life. Looking forward to the next one.

This book was extremely interesting. I switched back and forth between the audiobook and physical books. The narrator did a fantastic job bringing the story and characters to life. This is definitely a book you won't want to miss.

Love this series and the setting! Narration was excellent and adds dimension to the story. I highly recommend this book as well as all by CJ Box.

C.J. Box can be relied upon to give you a compelling, thoughtful, well-written story every time, and this book was no exception.

Although I generally don't like to read books in series, I took a chance with this one because I know the author is great and because it was being offered free to me as an advanced reader copy audiobook by Netgalley and Macmillan Audio (and I find myself "reading" more and more of my books via audio as novels are the perfect accompaniment to housework and cooking). I'm very glad I did, as I didn't need to have read any other book in the series to follow the thread of this story, and when old characters from previous books did enter the story, an easily incorporated backstory was provided.

The narrator on this audiobook, Christina Delaine, did an excellent job with the various voices. Her depiction of a young man with fetal alcohol syndrome was especially moving, and her ability to infuse calm Cassie with emotions she is trying to conceal is first rate.

In this fourth installment about a private investigator in Montana, Cassie Dewell, the PI is hired to track down a man who swindles women out of their fortunes after a first detective pursuing the conman goes missing. I can't really say much more without spoiling things, so I will just tell you to give this a read. The characters are sympathetic and authentic, the action is compelling, and the story-line ratchets up the tension without leaving the reader behind. An excellent read if you like a who-done-it or books about big-sky country or both.

Thank you to NetGallery and the books publishers for the complimentary copy of Treasure State by C.J. Box. As a reader, I always enjoy a good C.J. Box story and Treasure State did not disappoint! It’s fast moving with enough twists and turns to keep this reader interested and wanting more. Cassie Dewell is an every woman, 40ish, slightly overweight but still attractive in her own right. She’s smart and brave and curious. A plot and a subplot, we’ll written with well defined characters, this book would be enjoyable for any adult reader. C.J. Box makes you want to go to the great northwest! I’m in! A so.I’d 3.5 stars for this one.

This is the first book that I have read by this author. Cassie Dewell is an interesting main character, she's a PI, who has several cases that she is investigating in this book. I liked all of the action that was taking place and how the two cases developed over the course of the book. I listened to the audio version of this book and enjoyed the narrator and how she read the story. The story kept me wanting to listen to more even when I had other things that I needed to do. I can't wait to go back and read the other books in this series.

I received a complimentary copy of this audio book from Macmillan Audio through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for accepting my request to audibly read and review Treasure State.

Author: C.J. Box
Published: 09/27/22
Narrator: Christina Delaine
Genre: Mystery & Thrillers

Treasure State is the sixth book in the PI Dewell series, and my first. The book stands on its own; however, I sensed there was a history between characters while I was reading. I saw it was the sixth book at the time of my review.

Narrator Christina Delaine's voice fit perfectly as to how I visualized Dewell. She did a great job.

The PI is a 40 something woman, and her problems are just like every female professional: she drinks, she swears, she is overweight, and she works as law enforcement.

All-in-all the story was okay. I was intrigued just enough to stay with the book. The whole poem route was enjoyable. I liked the role Kyle played and thought he was well-written. I found myself smiling and hoping all his dreams came true. As far as the case went, I chuckled and giggled, I've known a man or two like this con man.

There is profanity.

This has Sue Grafton vibes. While I don't actively search for series books anymore, I would pick up another to read if it came on my radar.

Low expectations for this one were totally wrong. (I'm sorry, Mr. Box.) What a great character Cassie Dewell is -- Cassie from the book series, not the very loose TV adaptation -- and what a satisfying listen ""Treasure State" is. Reviewed in print and online for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

In Treasure State, author C.J. Box continues the series of Montana Private Investigator Cassie Dewell. Her latest cases involve a wealthy Florida widow who was scammed out of a fortune, a private investigator from Florida that has gone missing, and a challenge to find the writer of a poem that claims to lead people to hidden gold.
This was a great continuation of the series. I have enjoyed all the books in the series. The audio-book narration was very well done. I would recommend this book. I received a copy of this audio-book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Treasure State (The Highway Quartet #6) was a great read by C.J. Box. Cassie Dewell’s private investigator business is thriving. Her latest case puts her on the hunt for a slippery con man who has disappeared. A wealthy widow has accused the con man of taking her fortune. She wants Cassie to find him and get the money back. She ends up in Anaconda, Montana which is the perfect place to reinvent yourself. There is also a poem that promises buried treasure to the adventurer that finds it, and there are five deaths among the treasure hunters. Someone hires her and claims to be the one who hid the gold, he wants Cassie to find him. Cassie’s hands are full with both of these cases. I enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read more by the author.

Treasure State AUDIO by CJ Box is a Cassie Dewell mystery, taking place in Montana, as always. It is basically two mysteries, one being multi-pronged. Cassie has gotten a call from a woman in Florida who has lost her private investigator and would like to hire Cassie, not to find him, but to pick up where he left off. Candyce Fly was a woman of a certain age, and she was wealthy. Well, she had been, until a man had bilked millions out of her. She had hired a man named Spengler to locate the scum, but he had disappeared, too. She wanted Cassie to find the gigolo and bring him to justice. If she found Spengler, too, well, that would be just fine. Cassie called Spengler’s office in Florida and sweet-talked the researcher there to send her all Spengler’s file on this case. He had done a lot of work. It turns out there were other women, too. This man had stolen millions. Her second case was to find the man who had written the poem which potentially held clues to finding a $3 million dollar treasure. He wanted to to hire her to find him. He was taunting her. It was very odd. Well, she could do two things a once.

Obviously there is a lot of nuance to both of these cases. There are other people involved. It actually was fairly easy for someone with Cassie’s skills and contacts to solve both mysteries. But, while doing it she put herself and others in danger. She did save at least one life, though, probably two. They were complex mysteries, well-plotted, and well-communicated as each one played out for the listener. Cassie is good, but even she misses things. She has a gut that works well and leads her to solutions. She is an excellent character and this was a good book.

Treasure Box was narrated by Christina DeLaine who was the perfect choice. She had a slight western accent and spoke fairly slowly so she was ideal for Cassie. She ekpt the story moving at a good pace, and generally did her job very well.

I was invited to listen to an audio ARC of Treasure State by Macmillan Audio, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #MacMillanAudio #CJBox #TreasureState

I really liked this book. Montana provides a wonderful backdrop to the story that made me desperate to go there. The novel follows PI Cassie Dewell as she traces 2 unrelated cases. The novel kept my attention and made it hard for me to put down, and the audio narrator was captivating.

This book had a lot going on. It was a fun treasure hunting book with lots of corruption.

The character Cassie Dewell and how she is described in the books is a little different than how she is portrayed on the show Big Sky. Especially regarding her snacking and eating habits. Either way she’s pretty cool and I like that she sticks to her guns and takes no crap from anybody.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Cassie and Kyle. It was sweet and I loved how they looked out for each other in their own ways.

This is the first book that I’ve read in the series but I definitely wouldn’t mind checking out the rest of the series after reading this one.

OMG, I am SO excited I got to review a book by CJ Box! I LOVE all of his books and this one did not disappoint!! It's no Joe Pickett book but that's only b/c he's such a special character to me and I've read all of his books!

Cassie is such a kick-ass woman and I love that! She is a hard-working woman that takes care of her kid and mom AND is an awesome PI! What more could one ask for?? Oh, right she's super smart and cunning like a fox on top of all that!

A great book in this series, I can't wait to read more!

I didn’t know this was part of ABC’s “Big Sky” series (I know, I know). Even though this is technically #6 in the series, you can easily read it as a stand-alone and get caught up quickly. 3 cheers for that!

Cassie Dewell is a 40-something, single mom, private investigator in Montana (obvs). She’s tasked in this novel with locating another missing PI from Florida, while helping several women locate a man who conned them out of money. I am also getting the vibe there’s the idea of a crooked town cop thematically running its way through these novels.

There is also a secondary storyline of a treasure hunt for “some gold in those hills.” It was a nice, suspenseful reprieve from the main storyline and I enjoyed the resolve of this particular storyline.

I really like Cassie as a MC- she’s smart, headstrong, owns her own business, but doesn’t cross the line. Both the novel and the narration of the audiobook were good! I was zooming right through the storyline to answer the mysterious WHODUNIT, along with helping some of the women find justice.

Interestingly, it reads much like a tv show script (no surprise!) and I could see where this novel will certainly continue to lead into future writings. I will definitely read another CJ Box in the future, and I am glad I gave it a chance as a male writer writing a female lead character.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the early listen. This was my first audio (book) in this series. I enjoyed the story there was enough mystery and thrill added for a perfect mix. Will recommend and will go back and listen to the others in this series.
Narrator did a good job with the story

I 've been waiting for the new Cassie Dewell installment, and it did not disappoint. CJ Box delivers another well-plotted mystery with one of my favorite cast of characters. It was fun catching up with the characters. Don't read this book out of order; it's more fun if you know the backstories.

This installment has two parallel stories, one pretty brutal, and the treasure hunt a fun tag along. Plus, Joe Pickett's daughter April joins the cast. I wish April were featured more (but I'm sure that is to come). I listened to the audio version, and it was a bit strange hearing April portrayed by a different narrator, but I adapted.

If you are new to CJ Box, start his series at the beginning. He's one of the most consistently good serial mystery writers around. If you are a long-time fan, you'll enjoy this volume. It's not my favorite of the Cassie Dewell series, but it's a solid story.

Thanks to NetGalley for giving me an audio version of this book in exchange for a review.

“Private “Investigator Cassie Dewell’s business is thriving, and her latest case puts her on the hunt for a slippery con man who’s disappeared somewhere in the “treasure state”. A wealthy Florida widow has accused him of absconding with her fortune, and wants Cassie to find him and get it back. The trail takes Cassie to Anaconda, Montana, a quirky former copper mining town that’s the perfect place to reinvent yourself. As the case develops, Cassie begins to wonder if her client is telling her everything.”

First off – What’s with cover art lately? All “chick lit” seems to be in shades of teal, whereas all thrillers/murder mysteries, yellow and blue. The Best Seller shelf in my library is looking tragically homogenous.

Second – This book is just not for me; both in the did-not-enjoy and the not-the-target-audience ways.

I love a good murder mystery as much as the next bibliophile, but I found this one flat.

The plot was fine, but the characters were especially shallow. A person was either Good or Bad, with zero nuance.

Added to that, the heavy-handedness in regards to the author’s feelings about Covid protocols? Those concerned are brainless, spineless, and heartless, whereas all the skeptics were brave, hard-working, and clear-eyed. I get that Mr Box has to appeal to his base, but as stated, I am not that base.

5/10
