For anyone, especially those who enjoy travel and World Geography, and or those who have children/are children at heart. What a sweet way to learn about the world in which we live and to come to appreciate further the diversity that surrounds us at every corner and the adventures that await our curious souls!

Thanks to Netgalley and Kids Can Press for the ARC of this!

This was a great addition to social studies in our homeschool, showing the ways in which children around the world are the same and different from my children. I really enjoyed the maps included with each child’s information, it made it easy to envision the cities and towns they lived in.

This book is a joy to read to explore the diversity of children's lives on earth. In a format where the detail about the neighbourhood comes from what the children do to get to school, the houses they live in, what they do before and after school and what they like doing in their spare time. What is lovely about this book is the maps of the neighbourhood illustrated to show the places that are mentioned in the child's live and also with worda and phrases in their language, along with translations so you can learn greetings etc. At the start of the book is some information abiut how maps are used and what a legend and a compass rose is and there is a really usefu glossary at the back. Children will be able to learn about other children's daily lives and also have fun comparing them to their own and their own neighbourhoods.

An excellent introduction to world cultures and geography! Kids are introduced to all kinds of new places and ways of life by following children around the world as they explain what their hometown and dwelling are like, as well as little bits about their day-to-day lives. A great variety is covered, from tiny villages to giant cities, and there is good representation of all areas (including more than just one token location in Africa, which is sometimes a rarity in these types of books!).

This is also a great beginning lesson in map-reading, including scale, legends, compass directions, and points of interest. A phrase or two in the native language is also included, which is a nice bonus. This is fascinating and very readable, so kids will have a great time learning. It would make a great addition to school and community libraries for middle grades/middle school!

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

Foster joy in other cultures with this look at children's lives across the world. Big cities, small villages, and even a research outpost on the South Pole, and in each of them, we learn what the kids eat, how they get to school, and often what impact their faith has on their life.

I was surprised my kid was so interested in this, as she is 4 years old and it is fairly dense. But she was enjoying it, and probably would have finished it with me if it wasn't past her bedtime.

This could be a good jumping-off point for a research unit about cities or countries of the world. Have kids pick or assign them to one of the pages, and ask them to bring in more information!

A good pick for a school library, or for the home library of adventurous traveler parents!

First of all, thank you so much to Margriet Ruurs and Netgalley for giving me access to this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I'd have loved this book when I was a kid! The illustrations are so cute and pretty and it's a good level of information and personal life from the children. This is another thing I really liked, the work the author went through to be authentic, talking to the children, and doing their research with several sources and locals so that they validate the information in the book.
This book is very diverse and it's such a good chance to Eurocentric or Westernized world. It shows so many different ways of living, skin colors, a couple of words in languages known, and others not so talked about.
In general, I'd advise that all parents buy this book to give to their little ones so that they create adults filled with the desire to get to know more about the world.

“Where We Live: Mapping Neighbourhoods of Kids Around the Globe,” written by Margriet Ruurs and illustrated by Wenjia Tang is a gorgeous, interactive book that is sure to get kids thinking more globally while understanding more about how they live and how their lives differ from children in other countries. Through sixteen vignettes of children living all over the world, you find out about what’s important to children, about who looks after them, how they go to school, and what they do in their free time. One-page presentations are accompanied by whimsically, illustrated maps, showing important locations and people interacting in the country’s language. A great resource to help kids navigate maps and learn to use glossaries and language tools, while gaining an appreciation for the complexity and diversity of lives around the globe. There will be great discussions when you imagine what it would be like to live on a floating neighbourhood, like in Chnong Keas, Cambodia, or that a hippo sighting might mean having to stay home from school, like in Komanyana, Zambia. This would make for a fun and educational read both at home and in the classroom!

Teacher Tips

* Read one at a time and look up photos and other cultural elements to better experience each child’s story

* Have older children write their own bio in the style of and draw their own maps showing what is important in their neighbourhood

* Compare and contrast children’s experiences of school with the kids in the book

This is a fascinating, world opening book for the little ones, that explores the neighborhoods, communities, and cultures of sixteen different children. While this one shows the diversity and difference of so many children’s experiences and environments around us, it also shows the commonality of the human race and children especially. From a child growing up in a small island village, to Canada, New England, to Honduras and Venezuela, and even as far as the chilly reaches of Antarctica (grab your little one a coat). From colorful Spain to bike filled streets of the Netherlands to the pyramids of Egypt, to the sizzling sun of Africa and the crowded marketplaces of India, this one is as educational as it is fun. Bonus: the maps provided allow your child to explore and learn how to read and utilize maps.

I LOVE this book! It is such an awesome non-fiction text that teaches a variety of geography, cultural and mapping skills. The premise of the book is that on each double page spread there is a new child from a new location in the world describing where they live and teaching about their culture. The second page includes a map with a legend as well as other cultural or historical ideas related to that location. As a grade 3 teacher, I could definitely see using this book to help teach about world geography and mapping skills. I appreciate the complimentary ebook I was given by NetGalley and the publisher, and will be purchasing a copy to add to my resource collection once it is published in October! I would recommend this book to parents and teachers of children in the age 5-10 range.

Wonderful book that does so much more then teach about how children live around the world.

The book starts with explaining maps and different parts of them. Every child has a legend to the map showing where different places described in the accompanying page are. They also have words written in that child's language and a translation on or around the map which is neat.

Great book with great pictures.

THIS BOOK!!! AHHHHH SO GOOD. I honestly cannot stop talking about this book & recommending it to everyone I know. If you’re a teacher (preschool/elementary), librarian or homeschool, you need this book. What a beautiful way to introduce children to geography (using a compass, map reading) and to other communities/cultures through the children who live there (real children were interviewed for the book). The illustrations are amazing. The stories of each child are educational and easy to comprehend. The addition of a couple key words/phrases within that child’s language is a beautiful bonus.

Seriously cannot wait to purchase this book & request my local libraries to do the same! Thank you so much NetGalley & Kids Can Press for this advanced copy!

I really loved this book. It gives children an insight into other kids that may be different from them. I loved how it included some religious aspects as well since that can be important to a culture. It would be nice if it included some common foods the kids are as well. My only critique is that I would like it to include pronunciations of some of the words so kids can hear the words correctly.

This is a beautifully illustrated look at other countries and communities. I liked that there were words in other languages included too.
My daughter and I liked looking at all the different things on each page and then talking about the differences.
This is a great book for kids to pour over for awhile and great for discussion.

Thanks NetGalley for this ARC!

As a homeschooling mom- we do a lot of hands on activities to really soak in our education.

This book will be a great one to not only- work on geography, but culture learning, and cuisine styles! We often tie in food to our history lessons, now I can tie in history, geography, and home economics! This book is a great guide.

Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me

I love books like this! This was great. Amazing illustrations and so many informative aspects that are great for teaching kids but are also so interesting. I think books like this are very important for kids to read as it exposes them to how different life is all around the world. The language is a tad advanced, maybe around a third grade level. I liked how there was a legend, glossary and teaching words. This would be great for teaching kids are maps! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the free preview in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you, Kids Can Press, for the beautiful advance reading copy.

I find this activity picture book really encouraging for the very young readers/reading age audience.

What stands out is the thoughtful inclusion of multicultural interest at most parts of the content with well planned illustrations.

The presentation is very well-organized and the representation of the different communities do stand out.

Go for this. It will introduce to some of the most amazing culture around the world.
