What a great addition to the Little People Big Dreams series! I think it is so powerful for children to get exposure to a wide range of different lived experiences, including transgender individuals. It helps trans kids see they are not alone, and other kids to understand and be more understanding. Laverne Cox's life was definitely a great story to achieve this with. To be honest, i hadn't heard of her, but I enjoyed learning about her achievements and liked seeing another current figure depicted in this series.

I really enjoy the Little People, Big Dreams series. These books expose young children to positive role models in a world full of such negativity. Laverne Cox shows children that differences are what make us who we are and the importance of embracing who you truly are. This addition is especially important for LGBTQIA+ youth and shows the inclusivity of the series.

Laverne Cox by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara explores the life of this bright and beautiful personality. Cox was the first transgender woman of colour to lead a TV series, and she's done transgender rights activism.

The entire Little People, Big Dreams series is an awesome introduction to biographical reading for young audiences. Not only that, but they focus on the most inspirational of people from science, entertainment, sports, politics and more. It's also a very diverse series.

At the end is a section with more detailed information on Cox's life, suitable for older readers. Inspirational and educational both, this entire series is great, and full of delightful art to engage younger audiences!

Laverne Cox is the latest addition to the Little People Big Dreams series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. I did not know who she was, but I am glad I read this book to learn about her. Laverne is a twin and was identified as male when she was born. She never felt like a boy and was always treated poorly by others. She was bullied at school and her mother blamed her for the bullying. When she earned a scholarship to the Alabama School of Fine Arts, she finally made friends and was accepted for who she was. She eventually became a dancer, then an actor where she became even more well known. At that time she felt confident enough to begin her transition and with support from other transgendered friends, she made the change physically to match the way she felt in side. She has worked with other Transgendered women to help them develop the courage to become who they want to be. She is a well known activist in the LGBTQ+ community. The illustrations are well done and depict Laverne Cox well. As always I love the timeline at the back of the book along with further information for grown ups and older children.

I first came across Laverne in OITNB, I thought she was amazing and did not know about her life growing up and I think this is a great book for anyone to learn about her life but also it doesn’t go into too much details that children won’t understand

Little People, Big Dreams hit this book out of the park. What an inspiring story of a trans person in an easy to understand language for younger readers. This book is about accepting who you are.

I always appreciate when a there's a children's book that can talk about trans kids and people with a language that is accessible. It showed Laverne as she was as a child, but the book always used her correct pronouns. I read this to my child and he understood, he said it was a good story. I agree with him, it was a good story and a book I'm going to have to purchase so I can read to my baby girl when she's older.
Thanks to the Publisher and NetGalley for the book!

I really love the Little People, Big Dreams series! This book in the series shows the life of Laverne Cox, the actress and trans pioneer who became the first transgender woman of colour to lead a TV series, and she was also the first ever trans actress to be nominated for an Emmy.

I enjoyed reading about her life from when she was young, until she was an adult, and how she eventually felt that she could fit in with the world.

The book has easy to read text, and bright, colourful graphics, which are beautiful to look at.

I highly recommend this book to all children, and to adults too, as we also enjoy learning about the lives of others that we may not have heard about before.

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

Miigweetch NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

This book is an illustrated biography of actress Laverne Cox, told in third-person narrative. The language is simple and straightforward, appropriate for elementary aged children. The information in the book is presented in an easy to understand and straight-fotrward way; the language is not ambiguous. Laverne’s story is told in a way that is inspiring without being proselytizing.

One thing I really liked about the book is that it’s all about LAVERNE - even when she is presented as a masculine-presenting child, her deadname is never used, and she/her pronouns are always used when talking about Laverne. (Deadnaming means referring to transgender or non-binary people by a name they used prior to transitioning, such as their birth name. Deadnaming can be accidental, but sometimes it is used as an intentional attempt to deny, mock or invalidate a person's gender identity.) The book provides excellent modeling for all on how to talk about trans people and their lived past experiences.

The illustrations are bright, soft, and charming. I recommend this book for elementary libraries. Classrooms who work on a biography unit would also benefit from having this book available. I also recommend it for families with gender-diverse humans in them as Laverne’s story could help provide a start point for relevant conversations.

I loved this book so much! My daughter and I are huge fans of the Little People, Big Dreams books. Every time we visit our local library we usually pick up a new biography to read together. I loved reading Laverne's story and love that this book provides as accessible explanation for children. I have a 5 year old daughter and we often talk about gender and sexual orientation. This book explains Laverne's gender identity and gender affirmation surgery in a way that is understandable for children. I can't wait for this to be available in print!

Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for letting me take a peek at this new book!

I love the Little People, BIG DREAMS series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. It's incredible to see how some not easy topics are handled in this series. I really loved that the she/her pronouns were used in this one throughout Laverne's story. I think this one will be a great conversation starter for issues around bullying and acceptance.

This middle grade book is written about Laverne Cox from birth to present. It's a simple overview of her life which includes fun details and important facts. The author doesn't leave out the fact that her home life wasn't ideal or that she was bullied. However, there is hope in the ending as we all know what she is doing now. It's a great read to give a glimpse of a LGBTQIA+ hero to a young reader.
