I’m not sure how I feel about this one still. I liked it while I was reading it but I found it very forgettable. I did really like the characters and the story line.

If you lost a loved one and someone offered you the chance to bring that person back with the option to improve certain character flaws, would you do it?

That’s the question Tamsyn and Ed are asked after a tragic accident leaves their daughter Scarlett in a coma, with almost no chance of recovering from it. Out of insurance coverage and out of options, they proceed with a medical trial that moves them to Switzerland and gives them the best medical treatment for Scarlett, unlimited funds, and an apartment they could not have originally dreamed of owning. They also receive their new daughter, Sophie. Sophie is made of a combination of Scarlett’s tissue and AI. To Tamsyn and Ed, she is perfect. Unlike Scarlett who was a bit of a nightmare to her parents, Sophie is loving, intelligent, and the complete opposite of their previous nightmare of a daughter. When Scarlett overcomes the impossible and wakes up from her coma, this now family of four is thrown into chaos as they discover their new lives aren’t exactly all they’re cracked up to be…and someone has some very sinister intentions.

I’m not even sure where to begin with this book. It was pure insanity, basically from the start. Scarlett is truly an awful person, and seeing how her replacement Sophie was so drastically different really left me conflicted. The story felt like it took me on a high speed chase with all the twists and turns. Parts of the story just left me utterly flabbergasted. I alternated between reading this and listening to the audiobook, and I finished in just over 24 hours. The audiobook is perfection, and both narrators really make you feel like the tension is being raised with each chapter. I had NO idea how this story would end. This is such a unique spin on a moral dilemma, and I couldn’t stop until I reached the end. Huge thank you to @berkleypub and @netgalley for providing a copy of the book in exchange for my review, as well as @emilybarrauthor for writing such an interesting and dramatic story! I highly recommend the audiobook, narrated by Anniwaa Buachie and Ellie Rose Boswell.

Tamsyn and Ed navigate a challenging life, working long hours for meager pay, all while dealing with their moody and rebellious daughter, Scarlett. Their world takes a tragic turn when Scarlett is involved in a devastating accident, leaving her comatose with slim chances of recovery. Struggling with limited options, the family is presented with an extraordinary opportunity—a medical trial offering the best treatment for Scarlett, a fully furnished apartment, and an unlimited spending account. The catch: they must relocate to Switzerland and welcome an artificial replica of Scarlett into their home.

The family's existence undergoes a profound transformation. Tamsyn and Ed find themselves in a world where their needs are effortlessly met, and the AI replacement, Sophie, brings a semblance of their daughter back, minus the undesirable aspects. As the narrative unfolds, unexpected twists take shape, prompting profound contemplation about the implications of cutting-edge technology. The novel proves thought-provoking, capturing the reader's attention with its unforeseen developments.

While Tamsyn, Ed, and Scarlett were ensnared in a challenging life before the accident, their relocation to Switzerland ushers in a carefree, opulent existence with its hidden costs. The newfound life, however, comes with a different set of challenges, revealing unexpected shackles and a lack of privacy. The tension within the family takes on a new form, threatening to unravel everything they have gained in their pursuit of a seemingly idyllic life. This was a very enjoyable read and I highly recommend it.

Tamsyn and Ed are hoping for better days they are having trouble in in their marriage, money is beyond tight and their daughter, Scarlett had hit the teen difficult years hard. One night changes their family, when Scarlett runs out and she is involved in a horrific accident.
Tamsyn and Ed are distraught Scarlett is in a coma and they don’t have the money to continue to pay for her care. When the couple are approached by a stranger that has an offer that sounds way too good to be true, all the medical care their daughter will need and all other expenses take. care of if they join a medical trial. Could this be the answer they have been praying for? In exchange they are provided a fully furnished apartment, a limitless spending account, and the family must agree to move to Switzerland and the kicker they must welcome an artificial copy of their daughter into their home.
Their life is completely transformed. Tamsyn and Ed want for nothing, and the AI replacement, Sophie, makes them feel like they have their daughter back, you know except without all the bad parts. Sophie is happy, and she actually wants to spend time with her parents!!
When Scarlett makes a complete real recovery, the family begins to uncover the forces behind their new life are much darker than they ever could have imagined.

Perfect for fans of Sci-Fi and Thrillers!

Tamsyn and Ed are frustrated with their lives and their teenage daughter, Scarlett is not making things easier with her tantrums.

Their lives are changed forever when Scarlett meets with an accident and VitNova, a corporation offers to clone Scarlett in the form of a lifelike robot with AI technology.
The clone is named Sophie and the couple begin their lives anew.

When Scarlett recovers, things get messy and the truth about VitNova and her family is revealed. This book will have you thinking if technological advancements can ever replace one’s loved ones. It will also have you questioning AI and it’s impact!

The New One was a very intriguing read. If you can suspend your disbelief and lean into the sci fi genre of this book it was very entertaining and thought provoking.

QUICK TAKE: really fun concept, though I was a little iffy on the execution. Loved the idea of a family dealing with the fallout of their daughter having to interact with her replacement clone, though not sure it explored themes and interpersonal dynamics enough and instead focused on the suspense and darkness. Still, fun book.

A brilliant book with a couple of great twists. I love the combination of sci-fi with domestic drama. I hope to see more from this great writer!

I jumped to read this because of the clone concept. If your child's only chance at survival was as a clone, would you do it? What if it meant moving to another country to be treated at an experimental clinic cloaked in secrecy? What if they offered you the perfect life, and the perfect daughter?
This turned a bit silly and not heavy enough into the sci-fi for me, but I will read any clone book.

Holy Black Mirror! I normally wouldn't pick up a book like this, but I'm glad I did. It was a slow burn, but had enough twists to keep me going. The characters were likeable as the story went on and I'm scared of Sophie.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC

Essentially this is a story of relationships and family, not a twisty thriller. The character development was decent but this kind story is simply not to my personal tastes.

Short synopsis: When troubled teen Scarlet gets run over by a car, he parents accept the opportunity of a lifetime to clone her.

My thoughts: This was a fun and unique book, it’s not something I haven’t seen before (in movies) but probably the first I’ve read like it.

I liked how the author wrote in multiple perspectives but it would take a minute to figure out whose brain we were in each chapter.

It did have some fun twists midway through that I wasn’t expecting. I did hope for a little more at the end, but overall it was an enjoyable read.

This gave me Black Mirror vibes, and I was here for it. Whew Chile, Scarlett was a terror to say the least and I was clutching my pearls at how she was speaking to her parents. However, the accident that lead her to being in the hospital, and as a mother, I understood the desperation that Tamsyn and Ed had to go along with the offer they were presented. I wanted to know why this family was chosen, as well as what the real reasoning for essentially cloning their daughter was.

Evie Green did an amazing job giving depth to parental feelings. I myself questioned what I would do in this situation had an opportunity been presented to me. Sophie was everything her parents (more so Tamsyn) wanted, but I still felt a sinister vibe from Sophie. Something just wasn’t quite right with her. Told mainly from Tamsyn, I enjoyed the perspectives from Sophie and even Scarlett. The whole time I was reading I had a feeling of unease, even when nothing sinister was happening. But when that plot twist happened, I was blown away. This was one of my most anticipated 2023 books and it did not disappoint.

This novel is packed full of twists and turns. Tamsyn and Ed are stressed, overworked and underpaid. It doesn’t help that their teenager daughter is well….a rebellious teenager. When a tragic accident puts their daughter in a coma they are offered a proposition. This proposition includes moving their family to Switzerland and an AI replacement for their daughter but what happens when Scarlett wakes up and what happens when an AI takes over your life? I don’t want to say too much but this was so unique!

I loved the cloning storyline idea of this book, but the writing made it difficult for me to enjoy. Didn't love the stark change in viewpoint suddenly in the storyline either.

I liked many parts of this book, including the social commentary on such things as the wealth gap and the abuses committed by the hyperwealthy. And I enjoyed the fantasy of being able to reproduce people via cloning and AI. I couldn't quite believe the "science," but other than that this was an interesting read.

Loved the concept. Clones that don’t know they’re clones. Sign me up. Unfortunately the writing was difficult for me, and I had a hard time getting past it. Also the strange change of point of view made zero sense to me. Sometimes it was in the third person and then it would jump into first person? Didn’t really help the story.
It also seemed quite slow in the Beginns then when it finally starts getting good 3/4 of the way in, everything feels rushed. This one just wasn’t for me, but I finished it because I was curious where it was going.

The New One by Evie Green was an average read for me. While I enjoyed parts of the story, the book felt too long and drawn out. I personally enjoy shorter thrillers, and this book is nearly 400 pages long. I started losing interest about halfway through, but things started to pick up more towards the end. The multiple POV‘s got a little confusing and the ending seemed a little anticlimactic to me. I thought the concept of this book was extremely interesting, and the story had a Black Mirror vibe that I loved. I thought the mystery was pretty well done and there were some good plot twists. I liked Green’s writing and I would read more from this author, but this just wasn’t the book for me.

The New One - a tale of what happens when you get everything you wanted but it came at a price?

When Tamsyn and Ed's daughter reckless daughter Scarlett gets into a horrendous accident that renders her comatose they are faced with a proposition they'd never thought possible. Come to Switzerland, give Scarlett all the care she needs, and in return the doctors will clone her and they must welcome the 'new' Scarlett into their lives as if she were their own. Tamsyn and Ed say yes, and live the benefits of a new lavish lifestyle, and a version of their daughter better than she was before. When Scarlett wakes up, they have to reckon with the choices they made and the fallout when secrets come to the surface.

Clones and science fiction usually aren't for me. Evie Green's novel luckily isn't too heavy on sci-fi and amps up the mystery up to 80. The choice of having a new perfect daughter is a tantalizing proposition to Ed and Tasmsyn you can see why they would make the choice. The characters are interesting with thought-out backstories. Thank you Berkley, Evie Green and NetGalley for the read.

When I read this book I didn’t hear many people talking about it. I picked it up not knowing what to expect. I knew it was part thriller, but I didn’t see that it was also part sci-fi.

We follow a dysfunctional family: Tamsyn, Ed, and Scarlett. Scarlett is the complete opposite of the girl her parents want her to be. After a car accident, everything changes…

There was a medical side to the story when the parents decide to move to Switzerland for a medical trial, where they get an artificial daughter named Sophie.

Sophie is the “perfect” child in the eyes of Tamsyn and Ed. However, Scarlett eventually wakes up after recovering from the accident… and everything goes from there.

Holy moly, this story was so unique and creative. I honestly wasn’t expecting to love it with the science-fiction aspect, but oh man, it was so interesting.

There were twists after one another that kept me speechless. They were creative. I don’t want to go too much into detail, it’s best not to know much.

There were so many secrets spilled and the whole time I was gasping as new twists were introduced. The story was mind-blowing, creative, and full of so much suspense!

Thank you so much NetGalley and Berkley for the review copy in exchange for my honest review!
