GASP!!

It isn’t often that I am shocked, but THIS book managed to catch me off guard!

Tamsyn and Ed weren’t the most affluent couple in Cornwall. So when a tragic accident leaves their daughter, Scarlett comatose, their insurance only gives her 8 weeks to recover, or the machines get turned off.

Even though Scarlett had been moody and rebellious this last year, they still love her dearly, so when they are offered a spot in a medical trial taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, they jump at the chance.

In exchange for the latest treatments for Scarlett, they just have to welcome a reanimated (cloned) version of their daughter into their lives. “Sophie” as she is called, is all of the BEST things about their daughter, and NONE of the worst.

NEW AND IMPROVED

They will live as a family in a gorgeous, furnished apartment and they will want for nothing, while VitaNova, the company running the trial, observes.

If Scarlett recovers, they can continue life with both daughters or VitaNova will welcome Sophie back at the hospital, where she was created.

Ed and Tamsyn finally have the daughter they always wanted in Sophie-even if she isn’t real-and their relationship with each other is better because of her.

And, then Scarlett wakes up…..

What will Ed and Tamsyn decide to do?

Well, this clever dystopian novel was a lot of fun to read! It was also easy to imagine this occurring in the not so distant future. I really enjoyed it and the 400 pages flew by!

If you are intrigued, you can pick up a copy on March 28, 2023.

Thank you to Berkley for the gifted copy provided through NetGalley. It was my pleasure to offer a candid review!

Tamsyn, Ed and their daughter Scarlett live in a cramped, stifling caravan. After a fight between teenage Scarlett and Tamsyn, Scarlet runs off and is hit by a car. With Scarlet on life support with little chance of waking from her coma, Tamsyn and Ed jump at the opportunity of a lifetime from a company in Switzerland. In return for a new life, luxurious gifts and money, they agree to welcome and nurture an artificial clone of their daughter.

This was a fascinating premise. The characters were well written and engaging. The plot unraveled nicely and contained a number of surprises. My only complaint is that the book felt unfinished. I hope there is a sequel in the works! Overall, 5 out of 5 stars.

Oh my goodness! My head is about to explode! This ultra genius book with full of unexpected twists burned my last standing and barely surviving grey cells to the ground! It kept me on my toes. It was pumping full adrenaline, leaving me breathless, sweaty, hyperventilating kind of wildest experience that I can ever imagine! It’s even better than the author’s previous debut novel!

When you think you understand everything going on, an unexpected twist comes out, pulling the rug out under from you! Just keep expect the most unexpected things because anything can happen in this novel!

Sci-fi meets action thriller may present you the one of most entertaining and shocking reading experience!

The story opens at the trailer park, introducing a dysfunctional family of three: Tamsyn: the miserable, tired and very angry mother, working on the muddy land to collect cauliflowers, working 15 different kind of jobs to support her family, husband Ed; hating his life, is ready to dash out, working at nights as a chef at the restaurant and 13 years old Scarlett: worst kind of problem child, seemed like get possessed by evil entity, cursing at her parents, hanging out with the wrongest crowd, drinking alcohol, lying, always running away from home!
Three of them have the worst kind of fight after Scarlet tries to run away at hundredth time and Ed brings her back to home! Curses were thrown at. Doors were slammed shut. More hate you, f*ck bombs were screamed! Then everybody goes back to sleep. Silence surrounds the dilapidated, dirty trailer! This is eerie kind of silence before the big storms.

After midnight, Scarlett talks with a mysterious man and tries to escape from the trailer, stealing the front door key from her mother’s hand and she dashed out as her parents pursue her. At the roadside, Scarlett keeps running to a car driving at top speed! The car doesn’t stop! And BANG!

Tamsyn opens her eyes at the hospital, sitting next to her daughter lying on a bed, covered with tubes, fighting for her life! She’s comatose, having a little chance to recovery but the family’s insurance policy cannot cover her expenses to keep her alive with machines.

Then something too good to be true happens and they get a life changing offer in the form of unusual medical trial. In exchange of best treatment for Scarlett, the family has to move to Switzerland to live in a fully furnished, luxurious apartment, limitless spending account. If you ask: what’s the catch? Big catch is in addition to move another country, they will also accept to welcome highly intelligent, well mannered artificial copy of their daughter.

Did they accept the offer? Of course they did because if they reject it, only two things they could do was returning back to their shitty lives and saying goodbye to their daughter!

When they fly to Switzerland to start to their new life, Ed and Tamsyn find themselves fall in love like the first time and when they welcome their artificial daughter Sophie, they realize their new daughter was as sweet as Scarlett a year ago before turning into very troubled child!

Sophie can do anything to protect her new family! But when Scarlett miraculously opens her eyes, recovering from the accident, the balances are about tragically changing in the family! The secrets surrounding their family may threat their lives and nothing will ever be the same.

Overall: Gear up, cancel everything in your life, bury your head into those pages of the book! It highly deserves your entire focus!

Special thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sharing this amazing digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.

After their daughter Scarlett is in an accident, Tamsyn and her husband Ed are approached with a fantastic offer: a life sciences company will take Scarlett to a clinic in Switzerland to receive the best care. Meanwhile, Tamsyn and Ed will live with a new daughter, a hybrid clone/AI grown from Scarlett's tissue. What could possibly go wrong?

A well-done version of a pretty classic sci-fi trope. Green does a good job of delving into the complex parental feelings, giving it a little more depth (and to be honest, the beginning part of a bratty teen tormenting her parents, then running into traffic and ending up in a coma was almost too well done for me as a parent!) I did see a plot twist coming a bit early, but I also gasped out loud when I realized it, so points for that. A satisfying sci-fi thriller.

Tamsyn and Ed are struggling to make ends meet and coming home to a rebellious daughter, Scarlett, only adds to the stress. Then, after a devastating accident leaves Scarlett in a coma and with a slim chance of recovery, a unique medical trial offers them an unprecedented opportunity. They are promised the best treatment for Scarlett, along with an apartment and a limitless spending account, in exchange for relocating to Switzerland and allowing an AI version of Scarlett, Sophie, to join their family. With their newfound wealth, Tamsyn and Ed feel like they have it all—until Scarlett makes a miraculous recovery and they uncover the sinister truth behind their new life.

The New One by Evie Green is a phenomenal book. It’s a little different from your usual thrillers , but I think that is why I loved it so much, I found the storyline to be very unique. It was also very well written with characters that were extremely interesting. The plot was so original that I knew I had to read it once I saw it on Netgalley. I didn’t predict the ending at all, another bonus to an already GREAT book. I definitely recommend this to other readers. It makes for a fantastic discussion.

Many thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley. I will post my review a little closer to the publication date.

This book was insane! It was nothing like I expected. That’s definitely not to say I was disappointed because it was amazing.

This was an alright thriller, but I found the overall mystery and "suspense" to rely too much on the common themes in domestic thrillers.

A shocking twisty novel with a speculative edge to keep you guessing!

When Tamsyn and Ed's very out of control daughter Scarlett is in a car accident, they use every last dollar to maintain her life support.
Great news arrives when they are contacted by a private company in Switzerland that will allow Scarlett to be cloned. The family doesn't think twice before picking everything up and moving.

Now in Switzerland, Tamsyn and Ed enjoy their new pampered life and embrace their cloan daughter Sophie. But they still miss Scarlett, and there is still a chance she may awaken! There's always a catch in this kind of trade off and when the other shoe falls, Tamsyn and Ed are floored! If you like speculative fiction, twisty domestic thrillers The New One is a great book for you! #Berkely

What parent of an out of control teenager wouldn't like to have a "reset" button which allows the family to go back to the happy times before their teenager turned on them? Ed and Honey are struggling with their 14 year old daughter, Scarlett, who has reasons for her out of control behavior of which her parents are not aware. When Scarlett is hit by a car and her prognosis isn't good, her parents agree to an experimental procedure in Switzerland which will keep Scarlett on life support while she lingers in a coma and will provide them with the good and obedient daughter Scarlett used to be in the form of an AI enhanced clone named Sophie. The trade off? They will need to live permanently in Switzerland in a life of luxury, never to return to their impoverished lives in England. What could go wrong? Indeed, more than one could imagine. "The New One" reminded this reader of Peter Dickinson's, "Eva" (c.1988) but with a few more plot twists. Overall, a quick read that brings questions of "humanity", "family" and the role of big tech in our lives to light.

This was a great book to read, after recently finishing Klara and the Sun. I have now been introduced to the introduction of AI to our world, in these two books, and it is both gripping and intriguing. This book was a winner, a story that pulled the reader in quickly, and then pulled a bit harder by adding in an unexpected twist. This author was new to me, but I will look for more!

Grief can bring people to the edge of despair. Tamsyn and Ed discover this when their daughter Scarlett is involved in an accident that leaves her comatose. Just before their insurance is to run out, they are offered a chance to help Scarlett. They move to Switzerland and proceed with the cutting edge technology that is going to bring their daughter back to them. But, as with anything that seems to good to be true, soon the cracks start to show up in the situation. There are other surprises to come. The New One is an interesting book that questions the direction medicine and technology could possibly go.

Tamsyn's daughter is in a coma after an accident and doesn't have much time before the insurance runs out. Without much of a choice, Tamsyn agrees to a medical trial. She agrees to let the company made an artificial copy of their daughter and in exchange they will provide round the clock care for her real daughter and pay all of the family's expenses. Tamsyn dreads meeting the artificial copy but is delighted to see she really looks, sounds and acts like her daughter. Yet this new daughter is hiding some dark thoughts. And what will happen if their real daughter ever awakes from her coma? This was an excellent science fiction story with a few surprises along the way.

I heard about this book on TikTok and decided to give it a shot. I’m so glad I did! The premise is creative and trippy and the story is full of twists and turns. Although some are predictable, others caught me off guard. I was easily sucked in and I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys trippy tech stories like those in Black Mirror.

Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.

Really liked We Hear Voices, enjoyed this one too but not quite as much. This one dealt with cloning and was super interesting and the twist REALLY got me! It got a little too sci-fi for me toward the end, but that’s just a me problem. Great plot. 4 stars!
