In light of recent news regarding the Chinese spy balloon, "The Last Spy" by Bryan Mooney feels particularly timely. Mooney's imaginative storytelling and evident expertise in counter-espionage make for a thoroughly engaging read, especially as he deftly inserts the plot into today's geopolitical climate. It is clear that Mooney draws on a deep background in this area, and his knowledge and understanding are evident throughout the story.

However, some readers may find that the constant introduction of new characters and their connections can be confusing, especially for those not familiar with the espionage genre. The characters only come together in the last few chapters, which may frustrate some readers.

Nevertheless, the unpredictable and thought-provoking ending of "The Last Spy" is a definite highlight of the novel. Overall, Mooney has written a thrilling and action-packed story that fans of the espionage genre will surely enjoy.

the last spy

This is a very America- centred book and I often found it annoying to read (as a Brit). If this is how big countries treat each other heaven help us.
Curiously lacking in any real emotion and full of acronyms which need looking up….long list supplied. The writing is very matter of fact and rather sparse. Easy read, acronyms excepted, so will appeal to those who like to read simple thrillers.
I don’t think I was the reader for this. I was attracted by the title but prefer my spy stories to be more nuanced like Mick Herron and the late great John le Carre. Le Carre has something to say about the world without being so obvious.
I read a copy provided by NetGalley and the publishers. My views are my own.

Not a bad read on international espionage. I guess I would have liked more development of the character relationships with each other, but the spy information was great. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read the book for an honest review.

Our reliance on computer chips and their instructions in so many everyday devices as well as national defences.
The vast amount of money in the development cycle, why spend when you can steal and adapt. This is not just industrial espionage but countries against other countries.
Is it true or fiction?I don't know but it certainly made me think.

Bryan Mooney has written a compelling book about Chinese spying in America. I could not put the book down and enjoyed all the twists and turns in the plot. It is well worth the read

Author Brian Mooney shows an extensive knowledge of Chinese spying activities against the US. He has a wealth of knowledge about US ships and weapons In The Last Spy he posits multiple scenarios wherein the US is being taken advantage of. Surprisingly, he brings these many assets into a spy thriller populated with more characters than the phone book and actually gives us a credible and interesting thriller!
Is the reader given too much information? Well, see for yourself. I personally glossed over much of the ships and weapons attributes, and I didn't come close to remembering all of the characters and locations. Perhaps the author could have written two novels instead of one, but...he didn't. So I judge The Last Spy on its merits while aware of its faults and give it 4 stars. Recommended!
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC.

With so much detail, it's apparent that the author devoted a lot of time to research which adds to the credibility of the story, Intricate in its plot development, at times the story slows, but it's only to gather speed.
