This was a fun and fast read that was perfect to tackle in spooky season. It certainly doesn't have to be saved for Halloween but just added to the atmosphere. I will definitely recommend this to kids asking for fun and different supernatural reads.

this was a lot of fun. i don't typically read middle grade but going into this story knowing this is for a younger audience i grew to appreciate it. if you're able to listen to the audiobook i highly suggest that form due to the amazing sound effects that added to the tension. the plot had a clear line that made sense and i loved these vampires a lot. i thought these characters were well done and i was able to relate to different parts and overall just had fun.

I liked this more than I thought I would, but I can definitely tell it was aimed at a younger audience. The story held interest, was written well, and the characters were likeable. I just didn't relate to basically any part of the story, I mean I wouldn't expect to relate to having vampires for parents, but, I feel like I should have seen at least some of my younger years in these pages and I just didn't.

Two tweenage girls, one human and one vampire, try to right the wrongs of a government turning adult vampires rogue on purpose. When Sophie’s mom, goes rogue, she enlists the help of her best friend, Delphine, to try and find the antidote before it’s too late.

This felt and read very much like a YA book but, as this was an audio version, I was quite impressed by the background sound effects that were recorded.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in vampires coexisting with humans and appreciates a story that revolves around friends and family above all else.

Sophie Dawes is a 12-year-old human in Hopetown, where humans and vampires live in harmony; Sophie and her vampire parents are proof of this. Lately, though, there are rumors of some vampires going rogue, attacking those around them. When Sophie’s mom becomes one of these vampires, Sophie decides it’s up to her to find the cure. She and her vampire bestie Delphine will do whatever it takes to find out what is causing this outbreak and how to stop it.

This was an adorable middle readers book that all ages will enjoy! I enjoyed the world building and the characters; it’s hard to pick a single favorite character in this story. Mary Cross did a phenomenal job narrating the audiobook. In addition to the fantasy storyline, the book covers some bigger issues in an age-appropriate way.

Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an audio ARC of this book.

This was a cute read! It's a middle grade fantasy and mystery wrapped up in one. I love the reimagining of kids turned as kids into vampires and what they're like centuries after their turning.

Sophie is a 12 year living with her two adoptive vampire moms. She loves her moms and happy to be with them. When vampires start going rogue from bad blood, Sophie and her friend try to figure out what is happening.

Enjoyable young adult book. Good narration by Mary Cross.

The Last Hope in Hopetown is a really fun middle grade read. I really enjoyed the integration of vampires in the human world. It's a fight against time to determine the cause behind some vampires going 'rogue'. The central friendship and supportive parents were my favourite part of the story.

This is definitely one i'll grab for my kid.
Mary Cross was a wonderful narrator and gave the perfect youthfulness for the characters.

The Last Hope in Hopetown is a charming and well written adventure for middle grade readers by Maria Tureaud. Released 4th Oct 2022 by Hachette on their Little, Brown & co. imprint, it's 304 pages and is available in hardcover, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

The protagonist, 12 year old Sophie, is a human with two vampire moms, but the inhabitants of Hopetown live in harmony. Everything is fine until some vampires start mysteriously going rogue and becoming dangerous to those around them. When Sophie's own mom goes rogue, she is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery and save her family. There are big themes here: found family, the meaning of love, our interconnectedness, friendship and honesty, bravery, and the struggles minority groups live with to be perfect in every way, all the time, or face the prejudice that's simmering just under the surface. The author does a great job exploring these subjects with sensitivity and (importantly) in an age appropriate manner.

The unabridged audiobook has a run time of 6 hours and 1 minute and is expertly narrated by Mary Cross. She has a warm and richly timbred voice and does a great job delineating the characters. I never found myself lost or wondering who was speaking during the well paced dialogue. Sound and production quality were high throughout the read.

Four and a half stars. Highly recommended for public library acquisition, for school library acquisition in more liberal areas (sadly), and for home use. My 12 year old self would've devoured this book.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes

Twelve-year-old Sophie Dawes lives in Hopetown with her adoptive vampire moms. Vampires have to follow a lot of rules to keep the humans safe in their town. When one law-abiding vampire goes rogue, the entire community is put on alert. No one knows what’s causing the vampires to turn on humans like that. Then, one of Sophie’s moms goes rogue, almost killing Sophie and her other mom. Sophie is joined by her best friend Delphine, a three-hundred-year-old vampire in a twelve-year-old’s body, and they hunt for the cure before Sophie’s mom goes out of control.

This was such a fun vampire story. The characters were so original. I loved Sophie’s moms, who were called Mama and The Duke. They were quite original and had fun stories from their long lives. Delphine was also a fun character since she had lived a long life but looked so young. She hated technology, so she wasn’t a typical twelve-year-old.

I really enjoyed the audiobook version of this story. The story was clear and concise with lots of action. It was also fast paced, so it held my attention the whole time.

The Last Hope in Hopetown is a great middle grade vampire story!

Thank you Dreamscape Media for providing me with a copy of this book.

Sophie is just your average middle-schooler with vampire moms and a 12-year old vampire bestie. She uncovers a plot by which vampire blood is being altered to make the vampires go "rogue", necessitating an infiltration of a big money corporation with ties to the government to get the cure and rescue the at risk vampire population.

I think I've seen these exact plot lines in True Blood, except this version includes parenting and excludes boom boom.

Great audio narration.

This middle grade debut is so much fun and it’s perfect for the entire family. In this society vampires exist and walk among humans. They have families, they get married, they have most of the same rights humans do. This includes the right to adopt. Sophie was adopted at a young age by her Mama and the Duke. She remembers life going from foster care to foster care and she loves her permanent home and her mothers. However, her family gets lots of visits from CPS (child protective services) after all the government needs to make sure that the vampires aren’t snacking on their child. However, there’s something affecting some vampires and it’s making them go: “rogue”. This is an almost a feral state, and unfortunately this happens to Mama. And it’s up to the Duke and Sophie to not only save Mama but find a cure for all the vampires. Adding to the fun of this book, even children are vampires. Unlike other vampire lore, if you’re a 12-year-old vampire you are 12 years old for life; both physically, mentally, and psychologically. That means one has to have parents and Sophie‘s best friend just happens to be a vampire who was adopted to human family. These two get into some of the best trouble together. They both know that they have to save not only Sophie‘s family but her best friends lifeline. They must save their families and their way of life because love is love even if one of you is a vampire.

I feel like I've been reading a lot of Middle Grade books lately, and this was a great one. It was such a great twist on a vampire and human coexistence and just a really touching story of love, hope, friendship, and family.

📖 In a world where humans and vampires live a relatively peaceful coexistence twelve-year-old human Sophie lives with her two moms who are vampires. Her best friend is a 300-year-old child vampire named Delphine. Everything in Hopetown seems pretty good. That is until a string of vampires begins going rogue for some unknown reason. Soon, one of Sophie's moms uncharacteristically begins exhibiting signs of the unknown rogue contagion and child services begin threatening to remove Sophie from her mother's care. It's a race against time to get to the bottom of what is infecting the vampires in Hopetown and turning them into monsters.

🎧 The audiobook is narrated by Mary Cross, and she does a wonderful job of bringing this story to life. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audiobook and I would definitely encourage picking this one up for yourself or any kids who have a love of (not too scary) vampires.

This was not what I expected. I enjoyed the dynamics and the close friendship between the girls. You can tell they really care about each other. I feel like it was a little fast and could’ve had a little more information and story filled in. Even for a middle grade book it could have a little more. Other than that I still think it was a good story.

Fun buddy adventure for the fantasy YA crowd. Quick listen, enjoyable narration, and zippy.

Audiobook ARC from the publisher via NetGalley but the opinions are my own.

The Last Hope in Hopetown is an amazing book for young readers, even at 19, I enjoyed this so much. With it being autumn, this makes the perfect read for the season.

Tureaud has an excellent writing style that completely pulls you in and makes it entirely difficult to stop reading (or listening in my case). Their characters are well developed and easily lovable. My favorite character would probably be Delphine or The Duke, however, all of them were amazing in their own ways. Sophie’s relationship with her moms was genuinely something I really adored about this book. It was wholesome.

The audiobook is excellent. I really loved this narrator, they portrayed these characters incredibly. Will definitely be buying The Last Hope in Hopetown for my younger family members!

Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the early listening copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you to NetGalley for letting review the audiobook ARC.

This audiobook was a perfect way to start off spooky season! It's a fun story about 12 year old Sophie and her best friend (who happens to be a 200 year old vampire in a 12 year old body), as they try and find out what's happening to the local vampires who are going rogue. Sophie's two moms are vampires, and when one of her moms, who is the sweetest vampire there is, goes rogue, they have to find a cure.

I haven't read a middle grade novel like this before. I liked the friendship, and it was clear that Sophie had a loving family with her adoptive moms. They obviously face prejudice, which can be related to what LGTBQ+ families go through in real life.

The audiobook narrator Mary Cross does an excellent job with the voice of the young girls, and she does accents well. There are extra sound effects included.
