This book I was really excited for, but kept putting down due to lack of interest. I loved how the narrator broke the 4th wall and included you in the story. I thought there was something off about the pacing of the book. I really liked the cast of characters and the big reveal was worth it in the end.

Synopsis:
"Knives Out and Clue meet Agatha Christie and The Thursday Murder Club in this “utterly original” (Jane Harper), “not to be missed” (Karin Slaughter), fiendishly clever blend of classic and modern murder mystery.
Everyone in my family has killed someone. Some of us, the high achievers, have killed more than once. I’m not trying to be dramatic, but it is the truth. Some of us are good, others are bad, and some just unfortunate.
I’m Ernest Cunningham. Call me Ern or Ernie. I wish I’d killed whoever decided our family reunion should be at a ski resort, but it’s a little more complicated than that."

My Thoughts:
This is a unique and fun read. It is told by Ern, who breaks the fourth wall in his story telling……which really adds to the overall fun and humor. I have never read a book quite like this one before and thought that it was such a brilliant way to format a murder mystery. Ern walks us through both past and present events so that the reader can really understand his family. There are several twist and turns throughout the story, told with such wit and humor that I wasn't even trying to guess the final twist - I was just enjoying the ride.
This book is perfect for........ well anyone who enjoys a fun time.

⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 (4.5)

We start out with ‘Ern’, our Narrator Ernest Cunningham / self-published author of guides on how to write crime novels. Ern is joining his family for a reunion at a secluded ski resort in the snowy mountains of Australia. Of course, there is bad weather too. In his “how to write”books, he follows Ronald Knox’s ten commandments of crime fiction. Ern takes us through the rules as he reveals his own twisted family story. Most of the family has been mad at him for testifying against his brother, who committed murder, and now they are all reunited 3 years later when his brother is to be released from prison and join them. Hum... how many different ways can this go?

On the first morning, a body is found in the snow. Because of the snow storm, they only have 1 officer on the scene so Ern begins to try to figure out who the murdered man is after his brother is being detained away from the others as soon as he arrives.

This mystery gave me old mystery vibes .. Agatha type stuff. Sherlock ... A few clues here, a few clues there. You do have to pay attention so as not to miss anything important. There is so much going on and twist after twist. I enjoyed this story. There was quite a bit of humor. I enjoyed being in Ern’s head for the journey.

I was given a copy of this book for review purpose of providing an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I truly enjoyed this book. It was very funny and although the stakes were high the almost light hearted tone the narrator took made it more palatable.

Ernest Cunningham and his family are gathered at a ski resort for a family reunion and a celebration of his brother’s release from jail for murder. As the family becomes further isolated due to a storm, murder victims keep piling up with the snow. I had high expectations for this one but I didn’t love it. Stevenson’s first person style of directly addressing the read didn’t work for me. There were a lot of characters all involved in a complicated plot. For true mystery buffs this might be a great read but it left me somewhat cold. I thank Mariner Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.

This book had my laughing from the jump with so many nods to the supreme mystery writers!

LIKES:
1) the author talks to you. I listened to this for the most part so I wasn’t sure if this felt differently since I was hearing the words through my speakers, but I really enjoyed feeling like I was there
2) it pokes fun at the formulaic way writers write mysteries and he set “ground rules” similar to some of the greats to not be too obvious in who the murderer is
3) they keep you guessing as you who the murderer is. I seriously had no idea until it was revealed.
4) messy family drama that I actually enjoyed
5) finding out that is snows pretty seriously in parts of Australia. I feel dumb to not have realized that
6) it’s a fast read with sympathetic bad guys and shocks at who will save the day.

DISLIKES:
🚫 it was a solid novel!

An enjoyable read. There is lots of humor and enough intrigue to keep you engaged. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a fun mystery.

This is a really fun whodunit. The title doesn't lie, everyone in Ern's family has killed someone and there's a big and varied cast of characters. It's light and has quite a bit of humor. I really enjoyed it.

Another clever but possibly too cute/clever for its own good kind of book in the same vein as The Twyford Code. A lot of dialogue, less action . . . it wasn't a page-turner for me. I'm not sure if the story would have benefited from a different writing style; the way the plot is set up I don't know that it could have been done any other way. I read that it's been optioned as an HBO series, maybe it'll come across better as a tv show? I see this book being compared to Horowitz and Osman; I like both of those authors better and Osman is definitely a lot funnier.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

First of all, what a great title. I really enjoyed this witty novel and that the author broke the fourth wall by speaking directly to the reader. I found myself glued to the pages. I had a little bit of trouble keeping track of so many characters and had to take some notes to keep track. I found the explanation/conclusion to be long and complicated but it was a good solid ending that wrapped up nicely.

***** I have received and read an e - ARC from NetGalley in exchange for giving my honest feedback. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.*****

I think this book is going to be one that you either love or you hate.

The title is amazing and what drew me in to this story.

The set up is there to be an amazing book- isolated environment, a murder, lots of suspects, and everyone has the potential to be the killer. Definitely Agatha Christie vibes all around.

But the constant interruption of Ern breaking the fourth wall just didn’t work for me. The pacing was already a little too slow for me, but the fourth wall breaks slowed the plot down too much and made me want to just jump to the end so I could be done with it.

I also feel as if the stakes could have been much higher and it would have made for a much more intriguing story.

Overall, I think this is going to be better suited to a TV series/miniseries rather than a book.

I’ll give it 3/5, because the good parts were really good, but the bad parts were really bad.

This book had A LOT of characters. It was definitely a well told story but in a unique way. You only got parts of the story, which made you think you were missing things but it was all wrapped up in the end! I have read a lot of books and never read anything even close to this before. The narrator was fantastic. I really enjoyed this book!

This was a fun book! I loved the sarcastic and dry main character. I think that is where this book really thrived and was unique. It was also family focused (obviously) so I liked that aspect as well.

A fun and irreverent romp through the murder mystery genre, with a third-wall bending narrator and a plot that kept on twisting. A reluctant author and teacher attends a family reunion at a on-its-last-legs ski resort high in the Australian mountains. Attending will be the brother he turned into the police after he witnessed him murdering someone. Of course in a mystery on a frozen mountainside with limited cell phone service and access to authorities we expect to see more than one murder and we are not disappointed. Read this if you enjoy slightly unreliable narrators, sarcasm, dark humor, and locked-room style mysteries.

"Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone" is a fun and witty "whodunit" book that I would highly recommend. The author does a great job of building suspense and keeping the reader engaged throughout the story. Such a clever story!!!
A crime writer tells a story about a crime committed by his brother, and then also recounts how all the other people in his family have killed someone.
Much of it is explained throughout the story, with the narrator, Ern, short for Ernest, telling you where you should look for clues and murders. He also mentions rules for writing a crime novel and things you should not let fool you.
This was such a clever way to tell a story, and it kept me interested the whole time. I loved it!

This book was definitely....different. I can't say I was a fan of the writing style but I did find it quirky and creative. After a couple of chapters though it did get a bit confusing (and annoying) with the narrator constantly interjecting and referencing different sections of future and past chapters. I did appreciate the uniqueness though and think it will be greatly enjoyed by the right reader.
