I’m squeamish. I don’t like blood or fleshy scenes in tv, movies, not even books. Just the idea makes me gag. But I couldn’t put this book down! Or, my phone, I guess, since it’s an eARC. It is a perfect ending, and I felt like everyone got the ending I wanted. Is it historically accurate? I have no clue, actually, so maybe if that matters to you, you’ll have to find another review, but I can say that it is CUTE. I actually cared about the new cast of characters, which is hard to do with shorter books. Hazel is just wonderful, as always. Lastly, while I didn’t really enjoy the casual grave robbing of the first novel and the descriptions made me queasy, the medical parts of this book didn’t bother me as much, so that’s a definite plus.

Thank you to the publishers for this eARC. All opinions are entirely my own, and I publish this review with full honesty.

I was super disappointed with the ending to ‘Anatomy,’ so no one is more happy than me that this follow up installment was written. I think it was desperately needed as Hazel and Jack's story deserved closure.

That being said, I think this could have done better as a #1.5 novella instead of a full-length #2 sequel. The purpose of this, to me, is to answer everything that was left unsaid at the end of the first book. Nothing else really matters, thus becoming filler.

But it's really easy-to-read filler. I raced through this because of how nicely the writing flows and how entertaining the content is (even if it's not wholly necessary). So all in all, this is a very entertaining sequel and an ending the story needed!

This was such a good read! I loved stepping back into the characters lives and world, and greatly enjoyed the book. I would absolutely recommend the book to older readers, as well. It’s got the awesome female defying gender roles, and I loved all of it.

This is an incredible follow up! I adore this book, again the writing is so lush and incredibly fulfilling to read right after the first book.

Returning back to the story of Hazel Sinnett was something I have been looking forward since reading the first novel Anatomy: A Love Story. The gothic setting was perfect for the macabre events that take place in Hazel's life as a female surgeon. This novel was just as gripping as the first, and carried on the question of "what happened to Jack?" the man that Hazel loves and believes to be dead. As she deals with her grief and works on treating the patients around the family castle, Hazel finds herself to be shunned by society for her work, and trying to determine where she now fits in the world.
When a patient comes knocking at her door in the middle of the night, a series of events spurns Hazel to be swept off to England to care for the beloved Princess Charlotte who is dealing with a mysterious illness.
Schwartz did a phenomenal job of carrying Hazel's story forward, developing her character into a strong, independent, and intelligent woman who loves deeply and only wants opportunities that wouldn't normally be given to her as a woman. I enjoyed the historic liberties Schwartz took to bring the story to life, creating a story around the figment of truth while still bringing a fresh new perspective of the life of Princess Charlotte.
The pacing was easy to follow, the writing captivating, and interesting.
If desired, this novel could easily have an additional book in the series/trilogy to end it, but it also concluded in a way where if there was no additional book it wouldn't leave too many questions unanswered, only that the question of immortality leaves the door open to return to this world where living forever is possible. I am curious to see if this is the final book we will see about Hazel, or if more will be written. I felt satisfied with the conclusion of Immortality, but would love to see another.

Once again, we follow Hazel Sinnett, an aspiring surgeon. She’s convinced that the events that took place a year before were all in her imagination, though she can’t stop herself from looking for Jack within each and every crowd. Once she’s arrested after saving a life, Hazel gets the opportunity to work with the Princess, Charlotte, who is very sick. She becomes more and more entangled in the court and still can’t stop her heart from searching for the person she loves most.
I absolutely adored the first novel and rated it five stars. That being said, I did not enjoy this one as much as I had hoped that I would.

Let’s begin with the pros: Hazel and other characters that we know and love are here and we do get some answers the questions the first book left us with. I love novels that have a bit of political intrigue and this book did delve into that a bit, which was pretty fun. I enjoyed the plot itself in general.

Here are the cons: The atmosphere felt a bit off and slightly different from the first one in a way that I struggled with. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the first and felt out of place in the story with this one. There’s also a character that I felt acted differently, though still probably logically. They just didn’t show up when I thought that they would. I had hoped that I was going into the second novel to see an active search or a quick reunion, but that didn’t happen until half way, if not slightly over, through the book. I can see why the choices were made the way that they were, I just didn’t personally enjoy it. There’s also a bit of a love triangle that felt weird in this one, especially since we had one in the last book too.

Overall, it’s a good book. I can’t deny that it’s as good as the first. I was just hoping for a different outcome and dont fully agree with quite a few of the choices made.

I was anticipating this book after reading anatomy because I love Hazel Sinnett. If you’re a fan of Enola Holmes or Stalking Jack the Ripper you will enjoy this continuation. A gothic romance that is Full of twists and turns, historical settings, and a whole lot of mystery. Very difficult read to put down.

The sequel to Anatomy: A Love Story does not disappoint! In addition to court intrigue and a budding romance with a male doctor, Hazel learns more about the history of Dr. Beecham's immortality potion when she enlisted by a secret social club called the Companions to the Death.

Anatomy and Immortality: A Love Story is my new all-time favorite duology and are some of the best young adult books I have ever read. Dana Schwartz's storytelling, writing, and characters are incredibly compelling. Not only did I fall in love with the protagonist, Hazel Sinnett, a lady and female surgeon in 1800's Scotland, but the side characters were also wildly interesting. Dana Schwartz writes about incredible, relatable women with desires society does not understand. Immortality explores gender and themes relevant to modern culture and society.

Few books find a perfect balance between character development and plot the way Immortality does. I found the book fast-paced, with a stunning storyline, grand romances, a secret society, and delightful plot twists.

This is one of those books that are so wonderful I will be recommending it to almost everyone, regardless of age and genre preferences.

Huge thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and Dana Schwartz for the advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.

After reading and falling in love with Dana Schwartz’s debut novel, Anatomy: A Love Story, (and the gorgeous cover) I couldn’t wait to read the sequel, Immortality: A Love Story.

Hazel Sinnett is alone and half-convinced the events of the year before were a figment of her imagination. All she can really do now is treat patients and maintain Hawthornden Castle as it starts to decay around her.

When saving a life leads to her arrest, Hazel seems doomed to rot in prison until a message intervenes: Hazel has been specifically requested to be the personal physician of Princess Charlotte, the sickly granddaughter of King George III. Soon Hazel is dragged into the glamor and romance of a court where everyone has something to hide, especially the enigmatic, brilliant members of a social club known as the Companions to the Death.

This YA novel was almost as good as the first one. I was totally engrossed in the story with a great cast of characters and the overall theme of doing what matters most in life. I loved how the author wrote a beautiful genre mashup to include, romance, fantasy, a bit of mystery, and historical fiction. If you enjoy adventure and gothic novels, this one is for you!

Thank you for my complimentary eARC from St. Martins Press/Wednesday Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview this upcoming sequel!

A sequel to a debut novel that delivers! I really enjoyed Immortality; the pacing was faster than Anatomy, the stakes were high, and I liked the characters. I tend to favor Adult over YA, but this story was still mature, macabre, and mysterious enough to keep me entertained. I definitely would have enjoyed this duology as a teen. There isn’t a cliffhanger at the end like the first book had. There are still some unanswered questions, but nothing to truly agonize over.

I’m a big fan of Dana Schwartz and her Noble Blood podcast. It makes reading these books even more fun when you get to draw comparisons between them and real-life history.

(Also, the cover art for this series is extraordinary! I love the Reese’s Book Club journey for the author, but I really hope this sequel doesn’t come with the PRINTED ON book club sticker.)

Hazel Sinnett is a doctor who is still reeling from the events of the past year in which her mentor turned out to be an immortal killer and her beloved was hanged and accused of being a murderer... and the fact that she gave him a veil that turned him into an immortal. She’s been waiting for Jack to find her, to come back to her... but it’s been months and not a single word or visit. he spends her day wondering if he is alive or dead. She takes patients and maintains Hathornden Castle. When saving a life leads to her arrest Hazel thinks she is going to be sentenced to rot in prison... until she is specifically sent to be the personal physician to the beloved Princess Charlotte, the sickly granddaughter of King George III. While Charlotte’s disease eludes Hazel, Hazel soon finds herself being attracted to a new doctor and being drawn into the mysterious club known as the Companions of Death. Charlotte begins a sort of romance with the brilliant doctor Simon while still in love with Jack, she’s flipping between her feelings for the both of them, and then there is the mysterious social club that calls to her... all of the members who are famous people who are now immortals including Voltaire and Byron. Then Hazel’s life completely changes when she spots Jack, very much alive and avoiding her. She is going to hold onto him no matter what and demands that he explain why he has left her this whole time. Jack can’t see a future for them when he is immortal and she is very mortal, he can’t watch her die, he doesn’t want her brilliant future as a surgeon to be weighed down by someone who has nothing to give her, but Hazel won’t have any of that. Jack has her entire heart and the only way he says they can be together is if she can undo his immortality. When Hazel realizes that the princess’s illness isn’t actually an illness but something much more difficult, she is determined to help her and that means getting Jack to help her do what they do best... retrieve a dead body. Meanwhile, Jack and Hazel must find a way to create a future together, which might be threatened by the Companions of Death when Hazel inadvertently ruins one of their plains... and one of their members might be out for her death... but Hazel has a little secret up her sleeve, and after all this is a love story. This was the sequel to the first book and though it definitely wraps up everything nicely and sweetly, it was a bit harder to get into this one than the first book. This one suffered from the issue that many sequel books do, pacing, lack of story and overall motivations. The first third of the book deals with Hazel helping the princess and her new love and it definitely feels slow and a bit bogged down, but it definitely picks up by the end when Jack makes a return. I did enjoy the ending of the book as Jack and Hazel do get the happily ever after they deserve and overall the series was a great one to read.

I wish I didn’t have a life to live so that I could have read this from start to finish. I did enjoy how the author wrote and played with some historical events to make her story more worthy. I also enjoyed how she connected the first book into this book. Love = immortal. Some things you never see coming. Hazel never gave up on what she wanted and what she believed to be true.

Thank you to @netgalley and @stmartinspress for allowing me to read the ARC for my honest review.

Immortality begins right after the events in Anatomy. Hazel is struggling with Jack's death, or is he dead? She continues helping those in need but has found that she is lonely. She dives into her work, especially writing her treatise. After helping a woman in need and saving her life, Hazel finds herself in an impossible position. She is saved by an unlikely person and whisked away to a new life. Hazel uncovers many mysteries and reunites with someone unexpected. Will she have the life she's always dreamed about?

I really enjoyed this book! It has a slightly different feel than the first book IMO but it was still so rich. This one definitely has more of a Historical Fiction feel. Great duology!

Immortality begins where Anatomy ended, with Hazel’s grief, not knowing if Jack is alive or dead. But in true Hazel spirit, she knows her purpose. Despite the loss of her love, she continues her work as a physician and her work on a medical book for the common people.
Due to a surprise patient who shows up at her home (and who’s life she saves), Hazel is arrested and found guilty of a crime. Just when she’s sure she is headed towards her punishment, she’s whisked away to London to be employed as a physician to the Princess Charlotte, granddaughter of King George III.
Hazel adjusts to life around the royal court, and continues her work. She also gets invited to join the Companions to the Death society-a group of profound minds who offer her a once in a lifetime opportunity. But, Hazel learns that saving a life is not always as easy as curing a sickness.

Hazel is the heroine I wish I could have had a long time ago. She has her own moral and ethical compass which make her actions are ahead of her time. She thrives through many circumstances that should have hurt her social and professional standing.

I absolutely loved this story; just as much as I loved Anatomy. The twists and turns were heart pounding and riveting. The relationships, while complex, were beautifully built. The plot tangles and untangles masterfully.

And finally, I really enjoyed the author’s note at the end.

Thank you NetGalley, Wednesday Books, and Dana Schwartz for the digital galley.

I really enjoyed the first installment Anatomy and this follow up didn't disappoint. It follows Jack and Hazel's story from the events of the first book. A bit of romance and a triangle but overall more substantial and thought provoking than your typical YA romance. I enjoy Dana Schwart's writing style and pacing.

I genuinely enjoyed this series, the world building was so vivid and I couldn’t get enough of Hazel’s story. All in all a great quick read.

The first book in this series has been on my TBR since it came out, but I never got around to reading it. When I got approved for this book I hurried and bought the first one so I would be all caught up. I am so glad I read both of these books! I loved Hazel's character. Her drive to follow her dreams and to eschew society's expectations of her were so awesome to read in a Young Adult book. I love that she was always ready to press through hard times to continue the good work she knew she was doing. The immortality arc was interesting, but for me, it played second fiddle to the "I'm a doctor, dammit" storyline. I also liked the Jack storyline, although I kind of liked the other guy too. All in all, this was a fun and quick read that I would absolutely pass on to my teenagers to read!
