I was so happy when I found out there would be a sequel to Anatomy. I wanted to see more of Hazel and her trailblazing the way for women in medicine. I also hoped we'd see Jack again and have a happily ever after for the couple.

This was a different story from the previous one, less grave digging and disguise and more of Hazel making her way in the world and setting up her future. I enjoyed how smart and clever Hazel is, as well as how she stands up for herself in a time when women were barely working and mostly designated to the role of wife and mother. There are some great ladies in this and they made the book a lot of fun.

The ending was a bit different than I imagined it would be, but I thought it was well written and a nice conclusion.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All opinions are my own. Thank you to Wednesday Books and NetGalley for the copy.

After thoroughly enjoying last year’s release of Anatomy: A Love Story, I was anxious to pick up this sequel once I learned that book one’s ending was, in fact, not the ending at all. While this installment takes a somewhat different route plot wise, I still enjoyed reading it and being immersed in this familiar world once again. This book isn’t as gory as book one, which was a real shame, but I understand why the author chose to go the route that she did. There is a love triangle introduced here, and that made my heart anxious because of my love of Jack in the first book, but I think it was well done and felt content with how things wrapped up in the end. If you enjoyed part one of the Anatomy duology, I think it’s worth the read to continue on with book 2.

Great ending to this duology! I think Anatomy started a bit slowly for me and I didn’t love how long it took for the fantastical elements to come out. This one, however, kind of ran with it! I liked the changed history and the historical figures we got to interact with. Lord Byron is always fun to hate on. I loved seeing the conclusion to Hazel’s journey being about her success in her career and her love!

Satisfying follow up to Dana Schwartz’s novel Anatomy. Highly recommend the series and hope for more.

I'm obsessed with this cover! And I'm so glad we weren't left hanging after Anatomy.

In this book, we pick up right where we left off. Hazel is devastated by Jack's hanging but pushes on and continues treating patients. However, she ends up in prison until she's taken out because she's being requested to treat Princess Charlotte. Once in London, she meets the Companions to the Death, works with a handsome doctor, and becomes involved in the royal world.

I will say that it took me a bit to get into it. I feel like it wasn't until the book's second half that I was fully invested in the story, but then it was really good! The romance wasn't as good as it was in Anatomy, but I'll forgive it because the plot was intriguing. Loved Charlotte's story and I do feel like we got closure in most areas of this book.

I'm glad we got this book and I can definitely see more books with Hazel in it but I think I would be content if this was the end.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion and review.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC! Immortality is the second installment in the story of Hazel Sinnett. While I didn't read the first book, Anatomy, I would say that I was generally underwhelmed by this story. I loved the descriptions of the era, the history of medicine and inclusion of several key figures. After that, it was a remarkably quick read but lacked a lot of substance. The romances left me wanting more and the twists and turns did not have as much of an impact as they could have. Overall entertaining but could have pushed further.

The covers of this duology will forever draw me in. They are stunning which is a complete understatement. This is the second book in a YA historical gothic fantasy romance centering around the female main character Hazel Sinnet. Book One wraps you into the story of Hazel with her love of surgery, her journey to becoming one of the few female physicians of the time, and her young love story with Jack. To be transparent I would've been happy if book one was the conclusion of Hazel's story as I felt the second book lacked not only in plot but also relevance and substance.

It took me a long time to get into this book and I'm not sure that I ever truly did. Much like the first book this also had what felt like endless filler content that leaned more to aid in filling out the length of the text and less as a needed addition to the content. The number of times I had to step away was frustrating. In book one once I was past the slump of the book I found myself immersed in the story. I kept picking up this novel with the same hope as well. If I could just get past this part then I'll fall in. With 30-35% left of the book, the plot seemed to kick in.

All that to say it does not mean that I didn't find aspects of this story enjoyable. More so I found the duology as a whole moving. Book 1 creates a beautiful ache in the budding romance between Jack and Hazel. Even with a more somber ending you still find yourself much in a position of hope as Hazel does within the second book. She is hopeful as she thinks back to her time with Jack. The romance in this book does not contain the same burn but it is a bright spot within the book. I also loved the pull of a mystery in her circumstance that starts with the girl on her doorstep, her eventual arrest, and a very new predicament she found herself in while being the personal physician to Princess Charlotte.

I also really love the author's ability to add in her strength of capturing history as it was. I have read many historical fictions that do not live up to providing accurate depictions of the time that are written within. That is not the case in this book. Ms. Schwartz has a way of dropping subtle depictions of the time that allows you to not only recognize that she is knowledgeable of the era she is writing within but making it relatable that regardless of the timeframe you feel a part of the characters and story itself. Not many have the ability to do so. While I am tough in my critiques of the book overall this aspect alone had me driving up my rating.

Thanks go out to Netgalley, St Martin's Press &Wednesday Books for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

What can I say about this book?

I have been looking forward to this book ever since I finished Anatomy, and this one did not disappoint. Loved the characters and how they developed in this continuation. This book's plot kept you hooked the entire time. Could not recommend this book more.

Dana Schwartz‘s Immortality is the second book of a historical/science fiction duology. Like its predecessor, this is a fast paced book with lovable characters (and some villains). While clearly not set in the present, Schwartz makes characters relatable. Hazel’s determination is what propels the plot forward, but this is very much a new story in a new setting, with new characters. Most of the book is spent setting up this new story rather than resolving the unsolved plot points of the previous book. To avoid spoilers I will be vague- it felt like we didn’t get enough time with a certain character from the first book and that reunion seemed too easy. I definitely enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to reading more of Schwartz’s work!

Thanks to Wednesday Books and NetGalley for the eARC for my honest review.

After the cliff hanger of book one, this was a thoroughly enjoyable book 2 experience!

The pacing and writing flowed so well, it was a quick and easy read to follow Hazel as she moved to a new adventure with so much intrigue.

While continuing with an empowering feminist voice, Schwartz cleanly tied up any lingering questions from book one and gives readers a thrilling conclusion to the duology!

Immortality is the sequel to the wonderfully written Anatomy. (which I absolutely DEVOURED). This is no different. I loved the originality of this duology and am heartbroken to see that it is finished. More secrets await in Immortality and you will find yourself completely engrossed in the words Dana Schwartz has written for us. Truly spectacular story teller. These two books have moved her to my "must buy" author list. I don't care what it is. Dana Schwartz is THAT phenomenal.

a HUGE thank you to netgalley, the publisher, and the author for the opportunity to read this a few days early.

Loved Anatomy and couldn't put this one down! And LOVE this cover!!
Really enjoyed the twists and turns of this sequel. Perfect amount of mystery and romance. I highly recommend reading the first book, Anatomy, before reading this one! Dana Schwartz's writing is so well done.

In this second book of the series Hazel has started treating patients as a surgeon and is starting to get her life back together. She has no idea if Jack is alive or dead, but she starts to venture out from her gloomy castle. When she treats the wrong patient she finds herself thrown into jail, only saved from the gallows by an unexpected order from the royal court.

It is great to have another novel with Hazel in it. She is a very strong feminist character, and I love how sure of herself she is with confidence way ahead of her time. I found the royal setting and Princess Charlotte very interesting, and liked the change from her working alone in her Scottish castle. A wonderful job was done with the historical details and I really appreciated it. I did think the jail scenes were a little hard to believe in the way she is suddenly released after being told little about her charges. The secret society was SUPER intriguing and I enjoyed the cast of characters - especially the unique way that Hazel could help it's members.

Based on this book alone, I found myself more invested in Hazel's relationship with Simon instead of Jack. Everything draws from where their relationship left off in the last book, and Jack does nothing to really convince me that they have a great love that can endure. I was just left wanting more from them both.

Once again the cover is beautifully done! I do recommend this book, especially if you like strong women and medicine. It is not nearly as graphic as the first book when it comes to medical procedures, which is a plus. This is definitely a YA book and the romance is fairly innocent. Looking forward to more from Schwartz in the future. I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley and St. Martin's Press.

First off: I cannot express how much I enjoyed being in Hazel’s world. As a woman who loves science and healthcare, I immediately fell in love with Hazel’s plight to study and learn in this space. And as a lover of dark academia, this story was a beautiful combination of everything I adore. Immortality was a great continuation of Hazel’s journey, getting to see her shift into navigating a royal court was fascinating and interesting. Dana Schwartz’s sequel seemed less gothic, but still riveting nonetheless.

Thank you Netgalley for this wonderful ARC in exchange for my honest review.

First of all, I can’t start this review without openly marvelling at how the cover is absolutely gorgeous like the first book!
This book was a great wrap up and conclusion for what happened in the first book, anatomy: a love story, since there was a lot of things unanswered with that (sorta) open ending.
But, I honestly think that this book was too unnecessarily long and would have been better as a novella to the first book thought. Returning to the historical/medieval vibes was great, I’ll be missing it!

I've been a fan of Dana's since her twitter fame days and I really loved Anatomy when I read it last year. I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion, but I adored how Anatomy ended -all bittersweet and open ended but with a lot of hope and I didn't really wonder about what happened with Hazel and Jack because I thought it was implied.

That being said, while I didn't think Anatomy needed a sequel, I was very curious about Immortality. Dana's writing is so good and I enjoyed just sitting down with her prose. I read this book very quickly and I liked the way the story wrapped up which felt true to both Hazel and Jack. However, I'm still not sure this book was really needed. There wasn't really a plot and the "villain" was sort of boring. There was also an introduction of a love triangle that didn't really serve the story.

I still really loved reading it and being back in that world and it was lovely to get closure for these characters.

Thank you SO much to Wednesday Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an E-Arc in exchange for an honest review.

Immortality is the much awaited sequel to Anatomy: A Love Story. It follows as Hazel continues her work as a doctor to the poor. Although I love the premise of a female doctor in this time, I felt that this sequel was lacking luster in comparison to the first book in the duology. Overall, I did enjoy the book, although it is nothing of what I anticipated. I also love that the author clearly has no shortness of talent when it comes to illustrating their words into a picture.

Thank you so much to NetGalley, Dana Schwartz, Wednesday Books, and St. Martin’s Press for the digital arc of this book.

I really liked this installment in Dana Schwartz's series/duology. Even though I did enjoy the Anatomy better I could love and appreciate what was said in this story. 3.25 rounded down to a 3 for GoodReads.

Book Review: Immortality by Dana Schwartz

Immortality: A Love Story is the second book in the “Anatomy Duology” by Dana Schwartz. It is a young adult historical novel with elements of royal intrigue, fantasy and gothic romance.
When Immortality opens Hazel Sinnett is still working quietly as a female surgeon out of her estate in Edinburgh. She doesn’t know exactly what happened to her lover Jack after she gave him the immortality serum nor her former teacher the murderous Dr. Beecham. After helping a local woman Hazel ends up in hot water with the law only to get a last minute reprieve from the royal family in England. Princess Charlotte of Wales is in poor health and they hope a young female doctor might able to help. Hazel finds herself embroiled in the politics of the monarchy, a secret society in London that includes some of the greatest minds of the time and a flirtation with King George’s personal physician.
Immortality combines the gothic vibes of Anatomy with some details about the British monarchy in 1818. Although it diverges from the actual facts it still has some fun name drops in its alternative history. I enjoy Hazel as a character because of her unending quench for knowledge and need to be herself at any cost.
I recommend this sequel to anyone that enjoyed Anatomy: A Love Story and is looking for more science, dark deeds and romance.
