This book was just okay for me. It started off REALLY well. I was drawn in right away. I was so excited for the book! The plot line was really great, the idea itself was fresh. Where the story lost me is that it was kind of drawn out. There is so much that could be cut out and you’d still have the main plot line. It drives me nuts when there is so much useless filler in a book.
The story is told in dual POVs – Ruth, the mother, and Catherine, the daughter. I like that Ruth was writing in a journal and that is how we learn about her past.
Another issue that I had is that I didn’t really feel any thrills or suspense. I wasn’t gripped or on the edge of my seat. I really think with some additional editing this book could have been 4+ Stars.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an e-ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Told between the point of view of mother, Ruth, and Catherine, daughter, this novel has all the twists and turns that you would love in a book. There were a couple that I didn't even see coming!
Highly recommend for anyone that loves a good thriller with twists.

Ominous, tense, and clever!
Gone Tonight is a sharp, compulsive, psychological thriller that delves into all the deep, dark secrets people keep even from those closest to them and highlights just how easily people can be emotionally manipulated, controlled, and exploited by those they love.
The writing is crisp and edgy. The characters are distressed, unreliable, and vulnerable. And the plot, told by alternating perspectives, unfolds subtly into a murky tale full of twists, turns, surprises, familial drama, lies, secrets, manipulation, love, dysfunction, wickedness, deception, mental illness, and murder.
Overall, Gone Tonight is a crafty, sinister, engaging tale by Pekkanen that kept me engaged from start to finish and was a fantastic reminder of all the complex bonds and emotional ties that bind mothers and daughters.

This was an immediate "need to read" - and it did not disappoint! I was intrigued from the first chapter, and the storyline definitely took turns I didn't see coming. I loved the cat-and-mouse game throughout and the mother/daughter dynamic. Also, THAT ENDING?! I didn't see it coming - very well done by the author. Also, the audiobook is narrated by Kate Mara, which made this book even more incredible! Overall - give this one a try!! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the gifted copy.

I read mostly thrillers and mysteries, and Gone Tonight is the only one in recent times to leave me with a vague unease and eeriness.at the completion of the book. I literally had trouble sleeping when I finished it, and not because of blood and gore, but for the hanging questions at the end of the book and the mood it created. I consider that to be good writing!.
Author Sarh Pekkanen uses the now common device of telling a story from two points of view, but rarely have I seen it carried out so skillfully and smoothly. It's like being on a train that moves you forward in the story, yet each chapter unsettles some of what you thought you learned in the last chapter. Rarely is the unreliable narrator handled so well. I can't stand books with truly unreliable narrators, ones that you can't trust anything they say. That is not what is happening here. We have the viewpoint of Catherine and her mother Ruth. They love each other very much, maybe obsessively. But they each have concerns about the other, and as we slowly unwind past history, we begin to understand why that is. They are not necessarily unreliable in that they are lying, it is just that they are showing their different points of view, and we have to figure out who we most agree with.
Although there is not much real danger to the characters until the end of the book, the author still manages to create a sense of foreboding. I raced through this book in a couple of days because I found the characters so compelling and wanted to see what happened.
Thank you to author Sarah Pekkanen, St. Martin's Press, and NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC of Gone Tonight in exchange for an honest opinion.

This one had so much potential and ultimately just petered out. I was so excited to be reading a thriller book where I wasn't predicting every little thing until everything just got so easy to guess and boring. There could have been some excellent twisty endings here but no. No more of this author for me.

This is a suspense thriller about a mother and daughter, told in each of their voices. I'm a little tired of the dual timeline in thrillers, but this was executed well. There's secrets, lies, a bit of a twist, and it's all quite entertaining.

The latest book by Sarah Pekkanen does not disappoint if your looking for a good thriller/mystery. The story introduces us to a mother/daughter team, and we quickly learn that certain instances that we thought to be true in the book are not. The story is told in alternating timelines, and the story of the mother, Ruth, to me, was by far the more interesting story. Regardless, the story moves quickly and comes to a satisfying conclusion. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good thriller read. Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for an advanced copy.

This was my first time reading this author's work and it will not be my last. It is a riveting thriller about a mother-daughter relationship built on many lies. I enjoyed the characters and the two points of view. The build up of tension as we find out more about what is really going is effective and the slight twist at the end was well done. I also enjoyed the retirement setting and respect shown to the it. I really enjoyed the book. 4.25/5 stars

Thank you St. Martin's Press for my #gifted ARC and audiobook! I opted to listen to this because it was narrated by Kate Mara and I love when celebrities narrate books.
I’ve been a big, big fan of Pekkanen’s other works, so I was so excited to get an early copy of this! I loved the mother/daughter duo and relationship. It felt like a new take on this dynamic and one I haven’t seen often! The dual POV was so good. I did end up enjoying the mom’s POV most because of how the past started to unravel.
This is more suspense than it is a thriller, but it was perfectly paced. Things begin to unfold and at exactly the right time. It will keep you engrossed the entire time.

This was an interesting thriller about a mother and daughter and the secrets we keep..Ruth, the mom, has been diagnosed with dementia and through the split point of view writing style, we learn she isn't at all who you think she is. This was an enjoyable novel with good pacing.

Previous books by this author were good and I looked forward to more of the same, but not in this case.
Mother and daughter have only each other and it has been this way since the daughter was born. Now she is about to move out and move on to a new path and finds herself needing to cancel those plans when her mom starts forgetting too much. A diagnosis of Alzheimer's seems in order with the mom's secret history of her own mom having had early onset Alzheimer's. That is something many of us could understand.
What's ironic is that the daughter's job is caring for patients with Alzheimer's in a memory unit. She is filled with horror at the thought of her mom going through that. Spoiler alert! Mom isn't who she says she is and it actually seems mean to inflict that on her child, knowing how the patients weigh on her daughter's mind.
Daughter does some light research and finds enough info to not trust mom anymore. She tries to find mom's real identity which leads to a mess, of course. Mom is in hiding.
The timing and other aspects just all fell into place too easily and the alternating chapters were so closely related that I had to stop and see which one was telling this chapter. It started off good, but then somewhere the ball was dropped and it was a struggle to want to finish. I really didn't care what happened, just make the book end!
3 stars as it started off good, but that can't be said for the entire book. I received this book as an advance reader copy and submit this honest review voluntarily. Thank you NetGalley.

This book was so well-written. I couldn't help but keep reading and/or listening to the audiobook to see what would happen next. The twists and turns are well-planned out and flow easily into the storyline. The author is clearly gifted in creating a story that the reader becomes obsessed with.
Catherine and her mother, Ruth have always been close. For this reason, Catherine believes she knows her mother. So imagine her surprise when things happen one day and her mother seems to be a different person from he woman she always suspected her to be. At times the plot twists can feel a little far fetched but by and large, the book is a solid entry for this genre and I enjoyed it immensely.
AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: In addition, I also reviewed the audio version and found it to be quite well done. The narration felt perfect for the characters and really kept me sucked into the plot. Well Done!
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.

I'm a big Sarah Pekkanen fan, particularly of her books co-written with Greer Hendricks. I had high hopes for this one, but I struggled with a few things. The overall story of Catherine and Ruth's life was 1) far-fetched and 2) obvious in that it wasn't a normal life. As Ruth's story became more and more unraveled, and Catherine's childhood history was told, it was so clear that things just weren't as they seemed. So the further the story went, the less believable it became. Overall, I enjoyed the characters (although I had a hard time truly liking Ruth) and the story was intriguing enough to keep my interest through the end, but I think I had an expectation for the book based on previous books I read, and it just didn't meet it for me. It wasn't bad; I just hoped for more.

Thoroughly enjoyed this new thriller from Sarah Pekkanen! I was obsessed with both POVs, which really had me suspecting the other person the entire time as they were switching back and forth. I also loved the idea of them being a mother/daughter duo - I'm not sure I have read a book like that before! I didn't see the twists coming at all and loved reading it all unravel through the ending. While one part of the end was not my favorite in the way it just seemed too good to be true, the other left me wanting more in the BEST way. I will definitely read more from her, and I absolutely must try lasagna pizza now - if you know, you know!

In Gone Tonight we follow two main characters, Ruth and her daughter Catherine. They have both just found out the devastating news that Ruth has been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's Disease. Catherine is dealing with the thought of having to take care of her mother who has a condition that is irreversible, when she starts to develop feelings that maybe that isn't really the truth. She starts to realize that maybe she doesn't even know her mother at all. The book is told in dual points of view, and through this we get told the truth and see how this story folds into something else completely.
While I did enjoy reading this book, I felt like it just was very average for me. I didn't feel like there were parts that really blew my mind as far as the thriller go, and it was just too much of a slow burn for me. I felt like the characters fell flat and wished that we spent more time with them at the end when all the action happened instead of such a long build up to the major twist. It wasn't bad, just not something that I'll probably remember in a years time.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book. All opinions within this review are my own.

Gone Tonight is a slow-burn thriller. Started off a bit slow, but then kept me on the edge of my seat as the story unfold. Twists that NOBODY will see coming!
I had an e-copy as well as audio. The audio was very well done and I appreciated her different voices for the characters. With dual POVs (Catherine and Ruth) sometimes this is difficult to do.
Gone Tonight was an emotional page turner and recommended for anybody who loves a twisted tale! Loved it so much!

I really thought I would like this book more than I did!! But still I thought that was okay. I would not read it again, but definitely recommend

6/10 - This book reminded me a lot of Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter! A very similar plot about the relationship between a mother and her daughter. Coincidentally, I gave that book the same rating lol.
Overall, it was a quick read with a very predictable ending. I was hoping for a bigger twist at the end, but I still enjoyed the mother/daughter bond that was displayed throughout.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for sharing this digital copy in exchange for my honest review.

I was approved for this one after pub date, but I couldn't wait to finally read it after hearing so many positive reviews!
Everything you have heard about this book is true. It's fantastic. It grabbed ahold of me and didn't lose my attention. I don't often reread books, but this one one I will probably read more than once. Highly recommend!!
