Closing Shift - Charmaine Glass Davis

Thank you firstly for the e-ARC of this book, I was very intrigued by this book as it is only a short story (very short) and was wondering how it could engross you so quickly. The story pacts a punch and is definitely steamy with plenty of sex scenes, however I did feel it needed to be a little longer in order to get some much needed context and character info.

Not a fan. I realize this was a short story but it jumped so much!!! It felt like the author's outline that she slapped together as a "short story" because she didn't want to put in the work of actually creating the whole book just wanted people to know the high points and be done. This title had a lot of possibility but the writing style was unpolished and underdeveloped. I can't say I was able to fall in love with any of the characters. None of them came across as endearing (even the main character). They all just seemed shallow, 2 dimensional and totally delusional. If I could give it zero stars I would.

Oh, this was just awful. It wasn't well written, just a string of different euphemisms for sex or body parts. The "story" was, well it wasn't a story just a series "and then this", I regret the 20 minutes it took me to read it.

Short but sweet! Lots of sex, detailed scenes and dominant male figures. I think many people will enjoy this short story

Lol WHAT did I just read. This was absolutely bananas. For an only 25 page story there is SO MUCH packed in here, so many twists and developments and decisions are made in the space of .25 seconds and I just… For what the author was trying to do this really needed to be a novella AT LEAST. There was just way too much going on to try to keep up with or care about.

On top of that, the sex scenes, while plentiful, were also incredibly rushed and used really cringeworthy phrases like “wet love hole” and “pleasure wand.” Honestly if this had been any longer I would have stopped reading after the first paragraph because it was just not sexy.

Thank you to BookBuzz, Charmaine Glass Davis, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I am so grateful to have received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Please note there should be a trigger warning of abuse and dubcon in the book.

Real rating: 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4)

This book was wild. Absolutely wild. It’s only 25 pages long and so much happens in those 25 pages I’m honestly still putting it all together in my mind. There is literally an entire book’s worth of plot in these few short pages and there is a whole lot of smut to match the whole lot of plot. I literally could not put it down because so much was happening.

Some of my favourite – and least favourite – lines were
- ‘My wet love hole’
- ‘My bodacious ass’ (said seriously)
- ‘His dick popped out like a jack in the box’
- ‘I spread my legs wide to accommodate his pleasure wand’
- ‘His oiled pipe’
- ‘I guided his head to my love zone’

My main qualm with the book is a major spoiler so I will put it under the spoiler line. However, the second was just some formatting issues. There were weird page breaks at times – halfway through sentences, or sometimes there were even sections of text missing. There were also – what I assume are – page numbers spread through the text. I assume these were all formatting issues that would be fixed once the book is published.

Overall, I’m very grateful to have had to chance to read this book, while it is completely crazy, I very much enjoyed it. If you don’t want any spoilers stop reading here.

*Spoilers Ahead*

My main issue in the book is that the protagonist ended up with Russ. He physically and sexually assaulted the protagonist and was married to someone else for the majority of the story which I do have an issue with.

This book didn’t quite have enough of a character driven storyline that I was hoping for. The spice was A+ though!

While this book was a bit entertaining there wasn't anything really attention grabbing or outstanding about it. Lots of sex and thats about all.

I really, really wanted to like this book. It just wasn’t quite what I expect from a romance book, even a short one. Some of the wording was cringy at best (“wet love hole”???) and the storyline wasn’t exactly clear. Unfortunately it just wasn’t what I’d been hoping for.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
This is a very short novella starting a series so it is understandable that the author has tried to include some storyline alongside the explicit scenes. I think that the length of time she tried to cover is too long for the number of pages in the book, making it seem very rushed, especially when Samara changes her feelings about Russ within the space of a few minutes. The copy I received showed some typos and incorrect word choices although this may have been corrected prior to publication.
I thought this was only an ok read, it did not encourage me to read more in the series.

WOAH, this book packed a punch. There was a minimum of 1 twist a page and it was a 25 page book ☠️ A lot was going on, it wasn’t necessarily bad but it also wasn’t my taste. Never in a million years could I have dreamed up this story.
