Wow what a wild ride! I had no idea what to expect from this new book by Holly Jackson but it is exactly what I expect from her after the fabulous AGGGTM series. This book had the perfect combination of suspense and mystery and nothing clued me in to how it would all end up. She shocked me in the best way and I had a hard time putting it down!

So the first half of the book I was irritated because I LOVE A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (the series) and mentally I wasn't ready to be out of the world. So I couldn't stop comparing. Around the half way mark though, I was hooked. I had tears in my eyes the last parts of the book. Wow, just wow. Holly Jackson you've done it again. I have bought so many copies and I will continue to recommend this title to my students because I know they will love it.

Holly Jackson is an incredible writer and I would love to interview Holly for my podcast, Raise Your Words. This thriller is incredible and I can’t wait to read whatever Holly writes next!!

Red Kenny thinks her senior year Spring Break will be filled with underage drinking, long days on the beach, and maybe a kiss or two with the boy she's spent all year crushing on. She, and her five friends, are brutally unprepared for the turn their trip takes when they meander down a dead-end country road. Instead of turning their RV around, they find themselves stranded and in the middle of an active shooter situation.

Trapped in the dark, with no cell service, and no obvious means of escape- Red begins to realize that even those closest to you can turn into complete strangers when the right pressure is applied. The longer the night stretches Red can no longer be sure if the biggest threat is inside the RV or outside. With tempers rising as she can only look on in horror, Red will be shocked by the lengths to which some of her oldest friends will go, both to keep their own secrets and to ensure their own survival. Red's determination to do the right and fair thing won't be enough to get everyone out alive...

I flew through this book. I couldn't stop reading it. That is one thing that happens when I read thrillers or mysteries. I just cannot put the book down. i needed to know what was happening. This book was wild and full of turns. I like Holly Jackson's writing style. its easy to read and its not over done. This book was great and i really enjoyed the ride. I definitely recommend reading it. Now I'm going to have to read her other books.

This book was another crazy ride by Holly Jackson. I did not love it as much as the good girls series but that could be because I didn’t develop the same attachment to these characters. Still a great book which I found hard to predict and that is always my goal when selecting a book to read

thank you for the ARC!
I have read the author’s series, a good girl’s guide to murder, and really enjoyed it so I was really excited for this book. Overall, it was a fast-paced read, hard to put down, and suspenseful. The twist at the end wasn’t as original as I’d hoped, but I enjoyed the ride and look forward to the author’s future work.

Another great book by this author. I was hooked right from the beginning. This is the perfect YA thriller!

Having loved AGGGTM as much as I did, I was expecting so much from this book, and sadly, it did not deliver. The first half of the book was extremely boring. I usually like closed in threats, but something about this setup and these characters just wasn't good. The narrator also was not the best for this story. I have loved Emma Galvin in many other audiobooks, but when it comes to multiple points of view/third person narration, she is not it. She doesn't change her voice or emotions to fit each character and it just makes the book seem like it's coming from first person even though it's not, if that makes sense. Just not the best experience.

I really really enjoyed this one. I was really nervous to read this after not loving the authors last book but this one was full of twists and turns

Wow! What a wild ride this book was! The ending was shocking! It was much more emotional than I expected. It was overwhelming and stressful to read at times because of the content. It was an edge of your seat story. The pacing was off at times and could drag but the ending made up for it. Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read this!

As someone who dislikes both YA and thrillers, I'm not sure why I requested this. Honestly, I think I deserve this reading slump I'm in. I didn't like any of the children. I didn't care that they were being shot at. I didn't care about the "betrayal." I just didn't care.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC digital copy. I was not compensated for this review and all opinions are my own.

Fast read! I completely felt the intensity of this mystery. Lots of action driven by well-developed characters with a variety of traits: deep/shallow, rich/poor, mean/kind, frantic/patient….

Highly recommended for high school libraries and YA collections.

4 out of 5 stars and much respect to the author.

A compelling premise - six teens held hostage in an RV overnight, only five survive, according to the title, at least. The suspense is well-written and exactly what made me enjoy AGGGTM so much - I just had to read one more chapter before putting it down, then another, and another.

I was disappointed that the characters all seemed generic and unmemorable - it could have been a throwaway cast from any teen horror film - so felt difficult to truly feel invested in any of their fates. The confinement scenario only really works well with intriguing & complex characters that we'd want to root for and see survive; not so much when you're not too bothered either way and just want them to stop bickering.

I'm glad I picked this up to read more from HJ, but just wish there was more depth to each character's personality and story. May be more enjoyable for older teen YA fans than adults, as long as gore and excessive gun violence can be tolerated.

Were you looking for a YA thriller full of suspense after reading a A Good Girls Guide to Murder? Then Five Survive will definitely be the book for you, because it is at least as suspenseful and thrilling as the AGGGTM series.

The story takes off quite fast after the beginning and it gave me literal chills the whole time while I was reading it. I am not easily spooked but this did it for me. The whole plot takes place throughout 8 hours, we follow 6 characters as they try to navigate a life or death situation. We get to know them, their relationships and dynamics through flashbacks and how they react in a dangerous situation. At least for me every character was unlikeable and you can never tell who you can trust, but it made be on the edge of my seat more while reading.

If you like a fast paced thriller, where the characters are cornered this one is definitely for you, I promise you won't be disappointed.

This was a very good story but it lulled between chapters 16-23. I enjoyed most of the characters. I did find the main character, Red to be really annoying when you're supposed to be sympathising with her. Oliver was done really well, unravelling as the story progressed. Arthur was also really well done. I would recommend this to my teens.

This was good! It was quick and enjoyable but it didn’t live up to the first books shes written in my opinion. It was still a good book but it was still twisty and had me guessing the entire time!

I can see what Jackson is going for here. An extreme situation and the things regular people might do to survive. It just goes too far and lacks charming characters to make it compelling. Even the basic scenario - a sniper with a mysterious vendetta - is a bit extreme but the ultimate reveal is over the top. Jackson is really reaching in the explanation and the characters are a mess.

3.5 stars.

Okay, the last 40% of this book really picked up. But, overall this book was a bit of a slog with absolutely horrible characters. Truly, truly, truly, ____ needed to die about 10% into the book (if you've read you get it). The ending was great and was what I was looking for throughout the entire book. It's hard not to compare this to A Good Girl's Guide to Murder because I absolutely loved that book and thought it was perfect.

Five Survive felt very repetitive for the first 50ish%. Narcissistic, abusive character makes poor decision, can't take any responsibility, railroads every decision, and everyone around just cowers and gives in. That was really frustrating for a lot of the story. However, the last third did pick up and from that point on I couldn't stop listening.

This book was fine. I think if you haven't read AGGGTM yet and this is your first Holly D. Jackson book then you'll really like it. But, if you've read and loved AGGGTM then this one might miss the mark and miss the magic.

YA is not usually my genre but I devoured this book. The imagery and writing were great - I could picture exactly what Jackson wanted us to. I think this book made me a die-hard Jackson fan, she is such an excellent writer and really knows how to keep a reader engaged.
