This book is excellent! It is very informative, and educational, hilts still being fun. It has great photos and illustrations of detail to really bring the mushrooms to life, in a child’s school or home environment. I loved the level of detail the book goes into, as it leaves a lot for the child to absorb and to want to return to the book to renew their knowledge with.

We used the book as an educational tool as well, to back up our findings, when out on an identification walk. It worked so well and gave us a chance to look deeper into how important mushrooms and fungi are to the world.

We highly recommend this book.

Very competent and pictorial guide to fungi and mushrooms, from what the difference between them is to what we do with them (build houses, it seems) to what would happen should they ever manage to be killed off. At least there is no eco-catastrophe soon to come where they are concerned, but that doesn't mean children shouldn't learn about them. Very well pitched, so if the school library needs such a volume still, this – for the under-eights at least – should easily be considered. A strong four stars.

Beautiful, interesting photos, easy to read modern fonts and format, and a good “hook” in the beginning (about the giant fungus) draw and keep the reader’s attention from beginning to end. This book would be a great addition to an elementary level classroom or family’s library.

Thank you NetGalley and Norwood House Press Library for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Thank you for this free copy; here is my unbiased and honest review. This was a pretty good non-fiction book teaching about mushrooms. It was a way higher reading level than I expected, which would be a pretty far reach for a lot of my first graders. Still, it had a lot of good features for teaching non-fiction reading, writing, and text features. It had headings, definitions, zoomed-in images, and the structure we typically teach when writing in the non-fiction genre. I think it could improve by adding bolded words for the definitions they already provide. Otherwise, I thought it would be a great mentor text for the genre.

I came across this book right in the midst of camping season when my children were curious about different mushrooms they saw! This book was very informative and interesting, with facts that I didn't even know. I'd recommend for ages 8-12 with a curiosity for nature!
