An intriguing start to this new series and I look forward to the next book. Detective Matthias Honeywell and his partner Detective Cassie Malone are called to the scene of a home invasion. The homeowner followed the fleeing criminals, but when his car is found, he is gone. Was he abducted or involved in the heist? Emma Anderson, a freelance photographer, is shooting scenes on the local beach when she unknowingly takes a picture that the police need to see. She has found the missing homeowner and Matthias now has a murder case. He finds himself interested in Emma, but he backs off while Cassie tells him to solve the case so that he can ask Emma on a date. Emma is on the run from her abusive ex, but turns to Matthias when she is threatened. When Matthias becomes a target, is it because he is getting close to solving the case or to Emma? I enjoyed the spirited dialog between Cassie and Matthias and Cassie’s protective attitude towards her granddaughter. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)

It’s looking like this is the beginning of a new series, and if this book is any indication of what we can expect, it promises to be a very good one! The storyline offers plenty of action, enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and will hold your interest until the end. The characters were well developed, very likable and relatable. It’ll be interesting to get to know the characters and see how relationships develop as the series progresses. This was a thoroughly entertaining introduction to this new series!

The first of a new crime series by prolific author Annette Dashofy, Where the Guilty Hide introduces Erie City, Pennsylvania Police Detective Matthias Honeywell. Matthias and his partner Detective Cassie Malone are called to a second home invasion, where the household members are tied up. Meantime, freelance photographer Emma Anderson inadvertently captures a photograph of a hand amongst the flotsam on the beach. As the detectives investigate, Emma and her new friend yoga instructor Kira Pedersen, are considered to be somehow involved. Then, another killing raises further questions and Emma’s past comes back to haunt her. With its interesting array of characters and well-developed back stories, the series begins with this three stars rating crime read. With thanks to HarperCollins UK and the author, for an uncorrected advanced review copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own and freely given.

Annette Dashofy has been busy. She already has a highly popular series in the Zoe Chambers series, set in the author’s familiar Pennsylvania countryside but in a fictitious place. Count me in the avid fans of Zoe Chambers. She has a stand-alone, Death by Equine, published in 2021, which was not only well received by readers but also won the Dr. Tony Ryan Award last fall. And now Annette Dashofy has created another series, the Detective Matthias Honeywell Mysteries, and Where the Guilty Hide is Book One. Readers, who are devoted to an author’s long-running series, are always a bit anxious about their beloved author starting a new one. Let me quell that anxiety. The elements that have made the Zoe Chambers series successful are alive and well in this new series.

Erie, Pennsylvania has seen its second home invasion in less than a week. The second one occurs in a wealthy neighborhood in a house that has Lake Erie at its back end. Unfortunately, this time the homeowner gets loose from his ties, and follows the thieves’ van in his car. Detective Matthias Honeywell and his partner Cassie Malone arrive at the scene to find a distraught wife, Barbara, and two shaken-up teenagers. The homeowner doesn’t return home and is considered missing. His car is found empty in a lot, and while there are clues that Wesley Simmons was taken from his vehicle, there are no clues as to where he has been taken.

Emma Anderson has come to Erie to hide and to find her drug-addicted younger sister. Emma is a freelance photographer and is temporarily living in a camper at the local campground. An assignment takes her to the beaches along Lake Erie to photograph kite fliers. The day she goes is too overcast for the kite fliers to be out, so she takes pictures of the storm waves and driftwood. One large pile of debris from the ocean catches her eye, so she photographs it, too. When she returns to her car and looks at the photos on her laptop, she is shocked to see a human arm sticking out of the large debris pile.

Matthias and Cassie are called to the scene at the beach, as the body is a male who might be their missing homeowner. It is, and Wesley Simmons did not go easy into that dark night. The detectives now have a homicide to investigate, and readers will follow an engaging police procedural that shows the steps taken in the investigation and the adding up of evidence to reveal the guilty. It’s a laborious process that speaks to the character of Matthias Honeywell, as his relentlessness to uncover who is doing the home invasions and who committed murder shows a man dedicated to his job and community.

As coincidence would have it, Emma’s neighbor Joe turns out to be Barbara’s father, and Wesley Simmons’ father-in-law. The two men did not get along and Joe’s relationship with his daughter is fraught with turmoil, too. Emma seems to be caught in the middle of all that’s going on, being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Whether this is accidental or connects her to the criminal activity is what Matthias must determine. The home invasion death won’t be the last, and the time to solve the cases will become shorter and shorter.

I’m so glad that Annette Dashofy has added to her already extraordinary body of work with this new series. The cast of characters are relatable and full of interesting back story that readers will want to know even more about. The plot takes some unexpected turns that made me truly admire the author’s control of the story and its outcome. Dashofy knows where the story is going, enabling the reader to keep on track, too. The fast pacing keeps the suspense building and kept me turning the pages. And, the new setting of Erie, Pennsylvania on Lake Erie allows the author to stretch her well-honed talent of descriptive writing. She knows how to describe a place to make it a vivid image, but she also knows not to make description a superfluous barrage. It’s with great pleasure that I highly recommend the Detective Honeywell Mysteries series and its first book Where the Guilty Hide. The next book can’t come soon enough.

I received an advanced copy of Where the Guilty Hide from NetGalley and HarperCollins. I’ve provided my honest review.

Thanks NetGalley for the ARC of Where the Guilty Hide by Annette Dashofy.
This was a great novel, mystery and suspense, moved along at a good pace. This is the first of Annette's books that I read and will gladly read more
I would say two main characters, Emma has recently moved to the area, she had moved into a little trailer in a campground, she has left her past behind, she is a photographer now looking for freelance work. She happens to be taking some photos for a client and happens to come across a man sitting at a grave, turns out he is Mattias, the police officer investigating a home invasion.
This story is pretty fast paced, I certainly didn't want to put the book down. Loved the characters, plot, twists and turns. Author has developed loveable and not so loveable characters. Can't wait for the next novel

In this first novel in a new series, Erie police detective Matthias Honeywell and Cassie Malone are investigating another home invasion. But when the husband goes after the thieves & his body is found washed up near Presque Isle, it's now a homicide. Freelance photographer Emma Anderson's photo of washed up debris capture the victim's dead body. Emma had recently moved to Erie to escape her past & to find her missing sister Nell. She doesn't want publicity since Emma fears her stalker ex-boyfriend Clay Bauer will find her.

Then Emma's camper trailer is broken into, her computers stolen. Did someone want her crime scene photo or something else? Matthias & Cassie find a possible connection to another set of home invasions with similar MO in Buffalo and Cleveland. When another body is found & an attempt is made on Matthias' life, it's become more urgent for Matthias & Cassie to find the home invasion gang before they strike again.

This was a strong debut with compelling, complex characters that you care about and root for & a truly nasty villain.

I received a digital ARC from Netgalley and HarperCollins UK: One More Chapter. My opinions are my own.

This was a great thrill ride and enjoyed every minute of it of my read from the setting to the characters. Just had to stay up late and finish reading it, it so worked everything came together and I just loved it. The 'journey' of the characters works really well. What a great start for a series.

I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.

Detective Matthias Honeywell #1
MCU - Eerie City Police, Pennsylvania

A home invasion at a high price property backing onto Lake Eerie is the second in the area with the same MO. The family are tied up, the house robbed of expensive items but this time the husband gets free and gives chase to the perpetrators. Later his high price Audi is found abandoned and he’s missing. A few days later Emma Anderson, a photographer, is tasked with taking some photos on the lake front, she snaps some beach junk and finds contained within something she definitely doesn’t bargain for. The cases are investigated by Matthias and his partner Detective Cassie Malone.

This is such an enjoyable read in a great setting with mood enhancing descriptions that create a good atmosphere. It’s well written, I like the tone throughout which is sometimes uneasy, at others suspenseful with chills and some full throttle danger. There are several layers to the storytelling which keeps you intrigued and throughout you have the mystifying conundrum of the home invasions. It’s well paced, speeds up as appropriate and interspersed with good, authentic dialogue and sprinkled with some humour. What I really appreciate is the straightforward linear storyline with the author just getting in with the plot and thus you turning pages.

The characterisation is a very strong element. I find myself fascinated by Matthias who has the intense brooding presence of a character that might feature in a nineteenth century novel but very much a 21st century version! As the novel progresses you get to peak beneath the surface and this brings understanding of the demons being carried. He has that in common with Emma who has a great deal to contend with herself. She’s plucky, brave and honourable. I look forward to reading what happens in the next instalment which I eagerly anticipate!

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HarperCollins:One More Chapter for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

This is a new to me author, but I really enjoyed this book and will look for more to come in this series.

We meet Matthias Honeywell and his partner Cassie Malone, detectives in PA. They are investigating some break ins and then, in turn, a murder.

We also meet free-lance photographer Emma Anderson, who ran away from a bad situation and is quietly living in Erie, PA while she tries to find her missing sister. When Emma photographs a dead body in debris washed ashore on Lake Erie while on the beach, she quickly becomes a part of the murder investigation. Not good for someone trying to lay low, and who also starts to feel her ex is around and watching her.

I loved how the two storylines came together. I enjoyed the spark between Emma and Matthias and will be interested to see what happens with that. I will be on the lookout for additional books in this series.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins-UK for my gifted ARC.

I received this ARC from HarperCollins UK. I have never read anything by Annette Dashofy before so I didn't know what to expect. The plot sounded good so I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did! I love discovering new favorite authors! The storyline is great, I was very captivated by Emma and Matthias. I never suspected who was behind the robberies/murder and Annette's writing style is very easy to follow and "see" the book in your mind as you're reading it.

I'll definitely will read more of her books in the future.
Again, thanks HarperCollinsUK for the AR, Annette Dashofy, and NetGalley

I just loved this book and was so excited to find out it’s the start of a new series. I love when a book is set in a city or area I am familiar with. I have been to presque Isle several times and enjoyed remembering the sites. I’m enjoying the character of Detective Honeycutt and his story line. I also enjoy his connection with his partner Malone. Looking forward to their next mystery to solve

An excellent mystery you think you have solved, only to be proved wrong! Emma moves away from her home and place of work to stay in Erie, Pennsylvania where she hopes she will be safe, but unfortunately she ends up involved in a crime scene. I enjoyed this novel - the first I’ve read by this author and will look forward to reading more of Annette’s novels.

I would like to thank Netgalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for an advance copy of Where the Guilty Hide, a police procedural set in Erie, Pennsylvania featuring freelance photographer Emma Anderson and Detective Matthias Honeywell.

Emma is taking pictures on Presque Isle when she discovers a body. Meanwhile Matthias is investigating a home invasion where the homeowner is missing. Now the home invasion is a murder investigation and he wants to know what Emma is hiding. He reminds her of her stalker ex boyfriend and she’s frightened.

I thoroughly enjoyed Where the Guilty Hide, which is a pleasantly straightforward read. Obviously there are twists and turns and a bit of emotion, but A leads to B etc. in a fairly linear fashion. I found it very easy to read and follow. That is not to call it cosy, because it has a certain sharpness that that genre doesn’t.

I found the plot and the writing compulsive. The author has a way of drawing the reader in, so initially I wanted to know who was behind the home invasion and murder and I wanted to know why Emma was so frightened. Then there is a series of events that add to the mystery and make the reader want to know even more. It is very well done without being overly dramatic. I was equally impressed by the solution as it was an angle I hadn’t even considered. Full marks for concealment.

There is a hint of something between Emma and Matthias with the usual romantic trope of initial distrust and dislike leading to, well, I’m not quite sure. Friendship definitely, more than that will be explored in any further novels probably. Both are wary of romantic entanglement, but there is still something.

Where the Guilty Hide is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

Dertecive Honeywell Mystery, Book 1

In the early morning mist freelance photographer Emma Anderson takes photographs of the rocky coastline. She moved to Erie to escape a past that haunts her but the last thing she expects to capture is a dead body. Erie City Police Detective Matthias Honeywell has been investigating a spate of home invasions but when one of the robbery victims turns up dead, his case evolves into homicide. Emma's first encounter with Detective Honeywell leaves her shaken when he reminds her of her ex-fiancé - turned - stalker. Matthias misinterprets Emma's anxiety and suspects she knows more than she's letting on.

This is a well written, fast paced and gripping read. The story is told from Emma, Detective Honeywell and his partner Cassie's perspectives. Emma has left an abusive relationship and is trying to start a new life. But she discovers a body while taking some pictures for a publication. There are lots of twists to keep you guessing. Detective Matthias Honeywell has personal issues. The characters are well developed and believable. This is a quick and easy book to read. I'm looking forward to the next addition to this series.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #HarperCollinsUK #OneMoreChapter and the author #AnnetteDashofy for my ARC of #WhereTheGuiltyHide in exchange for an honest review.
