There's a lot I liked about this book, but there's a lot I struggled with. I think Hannah's writing is lovely, but it took me multiple times trying to get into the story. I put it aside for a long time, before finally getting back to it. That being said, I think it's a solid read and I will read Hannah's other books!

I have to confess, it took me a while to be in the right “mood” for this book because what it does it does SO WELL, but to me, it’s autumn-toned for that very reason. The magic system is really intelligently laid out, and I love the pervasive sense of intrigue and angst—court machinations always end up being one of the most appealing parts of a book to me, and that’s something that Whitten does really well in this book. I found this to be a lot more engaging than her past series, so I’m really grateful for the opportunity to read this. Will definitely be reading the next one!

In this captivating fantasy romance, the author weaves a beautifully intricate world filled with magic, adventure, and an undeniable chemistry between the protagonists. From the very first page, readers are drawn into a richly imagined landscape where the stakes are high, and love transcends boundaries.

The characters are delightfully complex, each facing their own trials and transformations. Their journey is not just about romance; it’s about self-discovery and the courage to embrace one’s true self. The chemistry between them crackles with tension, making every shared moment feel electric and deeply meaningful.

The plot is expertly crafted, balancing moments of heart-pounding action with tender, intimate scenes that linger long after the book is closed. The author’s lyrical prose brings the settings to life, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in the beauty and danger of this enchanting world.

Overall, this book is a delightful escape that deftly combines elements of fantasy and romance. It’s a testament to the power of love and the strength found in vulnerability. Perfect for fans of the genre, it’s a story that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the final page. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a magical journey of the heart!

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish The Foxglove King. It was nothing to do with the book itself, only that when I received the e-galley and started the book, the fantasy setting was too similar to some other things that I had been reading at the time. It just wasn't for me.

A fantasy romance with a backdrop of necromancy and court intrigue? Sign me up. Hannah Whitten intrigued readers with her duology, For The Wolf and For The Throne and The Foxglove King is another highly anticipated release.

I didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did. I shouldn’t have been surprised. I quite liked the first book in her other series. The three main characters were delightful. They each had layers to them that were different and interesting. I have a weakness for royalty in books. The other side characters were interesting and added to the story in a positive way. I like the pace and the amount of action. The ending had to have been my favourite part. I had expected a rather predictable and cliché ending based on where I thought it was heading and instead was pleasantly surprised with something else

This book was so good. Hannah Whitten writing has really improved. I love magic and worlds based on religion are some of my favorite magic systems and this did not let me down. The characters were funny and had their motivation and own voice. I need to start book two immediately.

Disclaimer: I received this book at no cost from the publisher/author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I am leaving a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.

Hannah Whitten just gets me. When her debut, For the Wolf, was announced I was over the moon because it sounded so up my alley as to be made specifically for me. I read that book and loved it. The author's writing voice got stuck in my head. When this book was announced I was even more over the moon because this book was even more attuned to my tastes than For the Wolf was!

Whitten is a rockstar storyteller. She has an edgy and relatable writing style that is easy to get lost in. The ideas used in this book are so creative and brilliant. They truly speak to my soul. It's like she gathered up all of my favorite things in a dark fantasy story and assembled them just for me. The plot of the story is compelling and kept me hanging on every word. The world-building is so detailed and atmospheric. I felt transported into this world.

I loved these characters! There are three primary characters and they all bring something unique to the table to create interesting and compelling dynamics. The characters were well-developed and easy to connect with. I loved their personalities. Every character in this book was distinct.

The romance in this book was a slow-burn situation. There was just a hint of romance but it was so satisfying. I am not altogether certain in which direction the author intends the romance to develop. There are two primary male characters and a romance could sprout between either of them or even both. There is definitely chemistry between Lore and both male characters. I would love a convincing love triangle in this series but I won't get my hopes up. Either way, the romance is ramping up to be something worth waiting for.

Overall, Hannah Whitten has written a story that is attuned to my soul. All the tropes and facets of this story come together to create the perfect story for me. This book resonates so strongly with me and I know that it will for others as well. Whitten has a unique writing voice that captures your attention and holds you hostage. This book boasts intricate characters, an intriguing plot, and beautiful storytelling. I can't wait to read the second book and I am so eager for the finale's release in 2025.

It's predictable, but I carry on because I need to know I am write..... also this whole foreshadowing of a past with the big three is tedious. I like oh sun boy and the others can just perish.

4.5*

Hannah Whitten writes beautiful stories.
While I loved For the Wolf, and was underwhelmed by For the Throne- her writing in both blew me away. And she didn’t disappoint in The Foxglove King.
I really loved the main characters- they gave me Celaena, Chaol and Dorian vibes. The magic system was so interesting. I loved the use of necromancy.
I am both excited and scared for The Hemlock Queen, but will be reading it soon!

Thank you NetGalley and Orbit!

Hannah, I'm reading anything you put out now. I struggled with 'For the Wolf', but if you told me this book was written by a completely different author, I'd believe it. This book felt like it has more vision and more overall design for the series as a whole, which was really nice.

I thought maybe that this was just boring at first because we had to get into the story, and then I thought, okay maybe we're just getting used to the characters, and then I realized this is just long and boring. There are way too many pages for not enough plot.

There was a lot of effort put into the world building, which I will say did lend itself to the overall vibe of the story. I totally felt the melancholy gothic vibe that I think I was supposed to. The magic system was dark and interesting. But there wasn't enough development of the characters. I also don't think the spying or political machinations were done very well and if they had been, I probably would have enjoyed this much more. But her job is to be a spy and she wasn't even good at it. I also don't think there was enough court intrigue for the length of the book or the supposed stakes.

At first, I liked the mystery aspect of the multiple love interests and Bastian being somewhat morally grey. But then it felt like there was a lead up to this being a poly relationship rather than a love triangle and then when it wasn't the reasoning for them all being 'connected' was so flimsy. Lore did not have enough personality and I just couldn't bring myself to care about her specifically.

Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for a review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
