I found this book highly enjoyable, however the writing style took me away from the story at times. I'm very much still looking forward to the sequel.

Okay so I feel iffy about this one. The author is a wonderful story-teller, and it has elements of everything I love in a fantasy. The magic system was also quite interesting. I was super excited for this read but it did fall a bit flat for me. It was good, it just did not WOW me, you know? I do love Hannah Whitten though and I love her writing as well.

The Foxglove King was a great start to what could be a great series. Definitely a lot going on and the first book of a series like this always has a lot of work to do to establish the world, and I thought this one did it well without distracting from the plot too much. That being said it did drag on a little bit but the ending more than made up for it.

I'm writing this review a couple days later and I have not stopped thinking about these characters!!! Say what you will about HW's world building, her characters truly stick with you.
For context, I enjoyed For the Wolf (4 stars), but not enough to continue with For the Throne. As many others have already said, the world building felt like even HW herself wasn't sure was happening. (and i didn't really care for the sister tbh)
Nonetheless, I would highly recommend The Foxglove King to those that did AND those that did not enjoy FTW!!! You truly notice the growth in HW's writing and the world building was exponentially better here. All that was loved in FTW is here and the parts that lacked were left behind.
I also feel I must add that no matter how different HW's books are, you can tell they're written by her. I can't really explain it but both books i've read of hers have left me feeling the same way. I cant wait to see what else writes!!
Side Note: Some other reviews have hinted at a love triangle but I want it noted that I have been rooting for a poly relationship since I first saw the fanart S

This story didn't grab me. I found it hard to enter into the world and the overall story. I did not finish this book either because of that reason. More backstory might have helped, but the dots just did not connect for me and it was hard to focus and be drawn into it.

I spent most of this book just kind of confused and being thrown a many different directions. I think that the concept of the story and the story itself is interesting. it was just a lot for my mind to grab onto and also stick along with. I will say i love prince bastian, he is such a great character and i did like Lore too. i LOVED for the wolf and for the throne by hannah whitten but i just didnt get that pull in this book.

Unfortunately I decided to DNF this fantasy romance. I loved the concept of this story and really wanted a new fantasy to fall in love with. However I struggled with the world building and writing in the first few chapters. The writing was extremely detailed making it feel long and drawn out. On top of that, I felt dropped into the world and struggled to keep characters and world straight.

Sadly, this one just didn't work for me and I won't be continuing with it or the series.

I loved For the Wolf, and finished it in one day. This book took me longer to get into, but when it finally picked up I didn't want to stop reading.

The strength of this book is definitely in its worldbuilding, and its magic system. The reader is never given a full explanation of how it works, but there are enough hints spread out throughout the book that it never feels like we're missing essential information that the characters don't know. If anything, the characters don't know it either.

I also loved the complicated relationships between the characters, and their complicated motivations and feelings.

Thank you to the publisher for the eARC I received.

The Foxglove King was my first Hannah Whitten book and it was pretty interesting!

The book had a lot of heavy info dumping but I overall did enjoy it. It’s honestly pretty unique and even though the info dumping was quite a lot of had be struggling at times I do appreciate Hannah’s hard work she put into creating a complex universe. I loved the dark gothic vibes going into this book and the court intrigue but I got to say though I wish their was more im the romance aspect of the books.

I went into this book thinking it was going to be Spicy and have this dark gothic romance but honestly it really didn’t…. And it had a love triangle w/ a miscommunication trope which o didn’t like.

Overall this book was a good start to the series and I shall be reading book 2!

Thank you to Netgalley and Orbit books for sending me a E-galley of this book in exchange for a honest review.

A good story and an interesting premise. Some of the plot points are a little clumsy, but I will definitely be picking up the next one.

I was skeptical about staring this because I read this authors other book called For the Wolf and I had to put it down. I didn't give up on it but I haven't opened it back up either. Once I started this book though I could not stop. This was a romantic fantasy and I was here for every page. The whole world was fun to be in and it was a very unique story. I cant wait to see where the series goes from here.

Lush, atmospheric, and delightfully gothic, Whitten reinforces the fact that she is a master at capturing a vibe. ‘The Foxglove King’ is beautifully wrought and filled to the brim with charged emotions and gorgeously immersive imagery.

The world of ‘The Foxglove King’ itself is richly imagined, and the delivery of lore is organic. Each turn of the developing mystery feels well earned.

While I don’t generally like a love triangle, the three primary characters are well developed, grounded, and all have excellent chemistry with one another that left me hoping for a “why choose” result by the end of the planned trilogy.

If you like gothic atmosphere, spooky mysteries, necromancy, dead gods, and romantic tension, this is absolutely the book for you!

Thank you so much to Orbit Books, Netgalley, and Hannah Whitten for the opportunity to read an advanced e-galley of this book in exchange for an honest review. It’s always a privilege and a pleasure to read Whitten’s work.

Classic trope: a nobody little girl dragged literally from the catacombs with a Big Secret Power (TM) to become a pawn between power brokers. Lore is no longer a little girl but WHY do all these young folk in fantasy novels think they can outsmart people like August and Anton who've be handling power and people for decades? Yes, we've got the unexpected courage of youth, yadda yadda, but I just kind of rolled my eyes when Lore, Gabe, and Bastian all got outmaneuvered by the King and High Priest. Bastian's ascension to kinghood also felt jarring and out of step with his character from the past 300 pages.

Hannah Whitten is such an incredible writer. I first came across her writing in the GATHERING DARK anthology and I LOVED her short story. And Foxglove King is a really fun start to a new duology/series (I'm not sure how many books there will be!).

The beginning was a bit info-dumpy that was harder to follow, but it did help set up the book in a way that made the rest of novel easier to follow.

The writing was so descriptive and lush that I was very easily able to picture everything in my head so clearly. our leading character was so strong willed. And I even enjoyed both of the male characters, pretty much equally, which makes for an interesting love triangle!

Im excited for book 2!

Rating: 3.25 ⭐️

The Foxglove King was an okay read. While, there were some elements and moments I enjoyed, there was just something missing in the story for me to fully love it.

I was able to listen to the audio version at the same time and the narrator was fantastic. It definitely made the story a bit more enjoyable.

It’s in the heroine, Lore’s POV only and there are some interesting tropes such as, religious trauma, political intrigue, church vs the crown, and a love triangle. I definitely would recommend checking the content and trigger warnings just in case.

The overall premise was pretty intriguing. There was a lot of political talk, dark magic, necromancy, and secret missions. The world building and descriptions were really interesting as well. Unfortunately, the pacing was really slow as nothing happened until the very end. So I was bit bored throughout the story to be honest. I was also a little bit confused on certain aspects and would have liked for some more development or backstory as well.

The romantic subplot was very minimal, which was fine. The story definitely focused more on Lore’s mission and powers. The love triangle was not my favorite to be honest but both hero’s, Gabe and Bastian, each had their own romantic moments with Lore. I will say that there was some good banter and tension between them all.

The last few chapters were really fast-paced and there were some twists and betrayals that were quite interesting. While, this book doesn’t leave off an a cliffhanger there are two more books in the series, so I’m curious to see the aftermath of the events in this book.

Overall, a decent read I was just expecting a bit more from the story.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

An exciting read. I can see many people really enjoying this book. I am not a fan of love triangles, so that turned me off, but I can understand how someone who likes them (or at least doesn't mind them) would love this book. Dark, twisting, and full of tantalizing indecision and the sweet power of death at one's fingertips.

DNF at 40%. I tried so hard to continue this one but I found the pacing to be off and I did not connect with the characters or the plot unfortunately.

I do think the magic system is very unique and interesting I just would have liked the plot to develop faster.

I don’t know where to start to be honest. This is going to be a short review because I don’t know how to keep the spoilers at bay.

I really enjoyed everything about this book to be honest. I know that there are mixed reviews generally. But if you want a witchy poison, dark and death, love triangle situation, this is for you.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-arc of this book.

I have really enjoyed this book. It was so atmospheric, I could feel the old-world opulence and the death magic so well. I loved all three of the lead characters, though love triangles aren't my thing, so I felt there there was good chemistry with both of the leading men, but honestly, I would prefer the story to end up "why choose" or even just neither of them (but we have at least one other book before we know that).

Loved the story, lots of lies and twists to this book. Very interesting read, kept me captivated to the end. I am hoping that there will be a continuation of the story. The author did a great job describing the landscape and setting the tone of the book.
