Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
I have not read the previous books in this series, and think it was would be advantageous to do so due to the large number of characters in this book. However, it is possible to read and enjoy this novel as a standalone. Previous events were referred to so that I understood what had happened but historical cases would have been clearer if I had read about them in chronological order. I liked the characters, a great team working together, intertwined with personal relationships as in any workplace. I thought the story was fascinating, filled with clever twists, and have signed up to follow this author. Please note whilst the story does not exactly end on a cliffhanger there are links to the next book and I'm sure, like me, you'll be hooked!

When all you want is to begin with a fresh start in a new city and a new home. What could go wrong? Holly moved with family to a new home with a mysterious past. Now, someone or something wants them out of there. An entertaining thriller, with well thought out characters and an exciting plot. This book is fast paced read and the flow of story is reads nicely.

This was good but I wish I had realized it was a continuing series so I could have started with earlier novels for context. Great story though and enjoyed the dynamics between the lead characters.

Rating: 4.5 Stars

Joy Ellis is a crime writer who is at the height of her storytelling powers and she has outdone herself yet again with a gritty, gripping and gruesome new thriller that will keep readers up all night: Solace House.

Holly Stewart and her family had been looking for a fresh start and Solace House seemed to be the answer to all of their prayers. Holly was fully aware that the property was a steal because a murder had taken place within its walls, however, she doesn’t know the full story. When things begin to go from bad to worse for Holly and her family, it quickly becomes apparent that Solace House isn’t the new beginning they had envisaged for themselves. Who is prowling the garden at night? And who wants them gone?

Jackman wants to help them, but his attention is completely on a cold case from twenty years ago. A young woman had been murdered two decades ago, but her head was never found. A new witness has come forward with some crucial evidence that could help close this case for good. However, this case quickly takes an even more sinister turn when, days later, dismembered human limbs are found by litter-pickers and a symbol identical to that found on the headless girl twenty years ago.

There is a clear connection between the two cases. Has the killer struck again? Can Jackman – with the help of Detective Marie Evans – put this case to bed for good? As the past and present merge in the most unexpected of ways, Jackman and Evans will have their work cut out for them in their quest for justice.

Joy Ellis knows how to write a tense, thrilling and terrifying page-turner that chills readers to the bone and she has done it again with Solace House. Deftly plotted, nail-biting and full of twists and turns that will make readers jump, crime fiction does not get any better than this!

Wow what a rollercoaster ride this book was,
I love joy Ellis books and have read/listened to each of the Jackman/Evans books. The characters blend in with the storyline perfectly, they don’t distract, they work together in solving horrific crimes in this book (in fact all the books).
Joy Ellis tells a truly great crime story and at the same time brings in characters that you like and care about. I cannot wait for the next instalment
Thank you Joffe books, Joy Ellis and NetGalley for getting a copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Solace House by Joy Ellis
It took me a while to get into this book because it has been a while since I read the previous book in this series. It was very good, as usual. I enjoyed the increased time we spent with Jackman’s mother. His dad is mostly missing in action until the end.
My only complaint would be a spoiler so I can’t really say what it is. Longtime readers will know what I mean when it occurs. Still, I am looking forward to the next book from this author.

Fantastic writer, fantastic story. Each time I read one of Ms. Elliis’s books, I feel like I’m coming home to old friends. She is an incredible writer and is adept at creating characters that feel real and atmospheres that elicit the mysteries she creates. I have yet to read a book she wrote that I didn’t love.

This was a good police procedural. It was unpredictable and fast paced. Detective Inspector Rowan Jackman, and his crew are investigating a deadly cult in their area who have sacrificed several people and at the same time are looking at possible reasons why a family are being terrorized by someone who wants them to leave their newly purchased house. I highly recommend this book to other police procedural readers. I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley, and the opinion expressed is strictly my own.

Totally absorbing.,,, Holly and Hugh Stewart and their children move into this house and terrible things start to happen. Someone doesn’t want them there.
DI Jackman and team investigate while investigating a cold case of a headless corpse.
This is the ninth book in the series!

A new family moving into a house with a dubious past are taken under the wing of DI Jackman when strange events occur that unsettle them, even though the murder that took place at the house is in the past strange goings in the present time link back to house and the family could soon be part of the houses history

As good as ever

Another wonderful book by Joy Ellis in the Detective Jackman series. Holly Stewart and her husband and two young children moved into the house called Solace and find someone wants them gone! Jackman with the help of DS Marie Evans investigate a case 12 years old that was never solved and find that the killer has killed again! I would recommend this book (and all Joy Ellis books) to anyone who likes a good thriller.

This was such an interesting read and I was left guessing the ending until the ending.

I loved the premise of this book, a family finding what is effectively their dream home in the quiet countryside which then suddenly turns dark due to events from the past. The police aspect of this story was told brilliantly, not too much superfluous detail but certainly enough depth to characters to make them likeable and part of the fabric of the novel.

I would definitely read more books in the series and by this author.

Thank you to Joffe Books, Joy Ellis and NetGalley for an ARC of this book

This is the ninth book in the Jackman and Evans police procedural series, and I'm sure this is the best yet.
There's been a slow down among the criminal class of Saltern-le-Fen, so much so that DI Jackman has taken to reviewing cold cases. One nasty crime from 20 years ago, the murder of a young woman, catches his eye. Others have reviewed it but so far no one has succeeded in breaking the case. He'd love for his team to have that success. Just as he's getting started a witness comes forward with new information. A couple days later Sgt Evans is called out to a dismembered body with the same weird symbol carved into it's flesh as the young woman 2o years before. Added into the mix is the modern case of vandalism. A young family has moved to an isolated farmhouse not far from Jackman's parent's stable. They're finding it hard to copy with country life and it hasn't been made easier by the vandalism directed toward their new home, a house called Solace. As the book moves forward the past and the present collide.

I love the characters in this series and enjoy their comraderie. It's rare to read a police procedural without all the angst of the lead detective and their dislike for upper brass or colleagues. It makes such a refreshing read and is one of the reasons this is a favourite series. I've recently heard the books have been optioned for TV and I can't wait.
