What an interesting entry in the Heroines of WW2 series! I thoroughly enjoyed learning about a little-known aspect of the war in the Atlantic—right off the coast of North Carolina! A group of Girl Scouts rescue a man they find on the beach after torpedo sinks an oil tanker. At first the girls keep him a secret, but eventually they introduce him to Ginny, their leader. Ginny is a coastal watcher, volunteer nurse at the local clinic, and works at the ferry. She resents leaving nursing school before her last semester to come home and take care of her mother and sister while her father works away on ships. Tim is the British intelligence officer who washes up on the shore. He is looking for a German officer who has the plans for the German war against the US in the Atlantic. Tim was escorting the German to New York. As the search continues, the relationship between Ginny and Tim strengthens. A satisfying conclusion includes the Girl Scouts, their parents, and a harpoon. Great story!

On My Honor
By Patty Smith Hall
Publisher: Barbour Publishing
Series: Heroines of WW2
Rated: 4

Back of the Book: “A Girl Scout Troop Joins the Battle of the Atlantic
Full of intrigue, adventure, and romance, this new series celebrates the unsung heroes—the heroines of WWII. Ginny Mathis was finished with nursing school and had no intention of staying rooted in the Outer Banks—then war broke out. With her father away, she feels duty-bound to stay and help her mother and younger sister. While working as a clerk for the Oregon Inlet ferry, naval officers ask Ginny and others to be watchful for German U-boats reportedly spotted in the area. So to help occupy her teenage sister, Ginny enlists the Girl Scout troop she leads to help watch for suspicious activity along the coast.
Timothy Elliott is no stranger to death. As a British reporter working with the M-6, he’s numb to the losses of war after two years of fighting the Germans. Maybe that’s why he volunteered for this mission—to connect with an ex-German naval officer who stole the Furor’s battle plan for the Atlantic war. When the boat giving him passage to New York is bombed near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Tim is thrown from the boat and wakes up in the care of a group of young girls.
Ginny follows her sneaky sister on a clandestine mission and discovers the shipwreck victim. Ginny knows she must take charge, but is this man the enemy, or does he hold secrets that could turn the tide of the Battle of the Atlantic in the allies’ favor?”

Impressions: What a fun perspective of WW2. Seeing the severity of war on the shores of their island prompted this Girl Scout troop to fight back. I enjoyed the ingenuity of the girls as they educated themselves and were ready to serve as needed. It was a cozy WW2 read if that is possible. Although the dangers of war were real, but the girls and the budding romance stole the show and deflected the atrocities that were happening elsewhere. I think this was a sweet novel but it wasn’t long enough to create depth in the characters and plot for a more dramatic read. The romance felt fast and shallow. I enjoyed this book though and think younger readers might as well.

Quotes: “… ‘when we can’t find the words, Jesus is there praying right along side us.’” -What a great reminder of how Jesus intercedes in love on our behalf.

On My Honor is a Fantastic story! It's got romance, faith, coming of age, self-empowerment, action, friendship, & family all wrapped into a relatively easy to follow storyline. I honestly want to be friends with all the main characters & hope Patty Smith Hall keeps writing more heart warming stories like this. Highly recommend!

5 stars, Dedication of a Girl Scouts Troop in WWII

ON MY HONOR (HEROINES OF WWII)
by Patty Smith Hall

Ginny and Belle Mathis are sisters trying to live productive lives during World War 2, on the Outer Banks. Ginny has been summoned home to help care for her mother and her younger sister Belle. Ginny had been attending school, to become a nurse. Ginny works two jobs at home and has also adopted a local Girl Scouts troop, to help encourage the young girls to excel.

Tim Elliot is a reporter with a secretive past, who washes up on the beach near the Mathis home. He is injured and needs medical help. What he gets is the lively Girl Scouts troop.

Ginny and Tim and the troopers all join together to solve a mystery.

This is a great book, it gives another angle of WW2 that not everyone may realize. All of the #HeroinesofWorldWarII series books are stand-alone and may be read in any order. I have read many of them.

Highly recommend. I was a Girl Scout, I'll confess, we never had as many adventures as these girls did.

A good read, but I feel the story was drawn out. It wasn’t a book that I could say ‘ I couldn’t put down’.
I felt something was missing in the storyline and to me the end was rushed.

This is another interesting historical romance. One from which I have learned something new about history! If you're a fan of historical romance, I definitely recommend this book for you.

I enjoyed the quick read about my home state of North Carolina's Outer Banks during WWII. I feel the author did a good job of making some of the parts of this area ring true under the perilous torpedoes of German U-boats. Other parts were harder to see as realistic, and I grew up in a coastal NC town just a short ferry ride from Ocracoke. The quick relationship between two main characters (who seemed more trauma bound than anything else) was hard to believe for me.

Such a heartwarming read. Ilove this authors writing style. The topic of this book was totally new to me. I did not know that our coastline was fired upon during WWII. Very interesting read. I love the characters in this story. Romance, trials, suspense, healing of relationships all included in this read. Must read! I was given an advanced reader copy of this book from NetGalley and I am freely leaving my review.

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

I’ve really been enjoying Barbour Fiction’s Heroines of WW2 series because they feature ordinary women making extraordinary choices to support the war effort at home. In this book, our heroines are a group of teenage Girl Scouts and their leader, and the setting for the homefront at war is the Outer Banks. Now, that’s a fresh perspective - a Girl Scout troop joining in the Battle of the Atlantic!

I loved the thought that although these girls were too young for active military or auxiliary service, they could still use those skills to ‘help people at all times.’ And, indeed, they did. When the opportunity arose, they were able to help Captain Timothy Elliott and the Royal Navy.

Adding to my enjoyment was the author’s exploration of God’s providence.

The author was also able to present a unique setting. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Torpedo Junction, a sunken oil tanker, and the Battle of the Atlantic brought close to the Outer Banks, all offered something fresh to wartime fiction.

Patty Smith Hall brings intrigue, adventure and romance in her celebration of the unsung heroes of WW2.

Intriguing Historical Romance!

I am still thinking about this book since finishing it! First off, the storytelling was fabulous as the author wove together an engrossing story of life on the home front during World War II, this book taking place on the barrier islands of North Carolina around Cape Hatteras. The setting was unique and depicted beautifully, making me wish I could time travel back to the area in 1942 and see it firsthand. Also, the characters were very engaging which made for a captivating read. Belle and her Girl Scout friends contributed so much to this story with their actions and conversations and Ginny and Tim were such an endearing couple as they tried to sort out the mysterious happenings around the island while getting to know each other better. I also loved that prayer was an organic part of these characters’ lives. What amazed me most of all is learning about a part of history that I didn't know had occurred in the U.S. during World War II, that of German U-boats targeting ships off the North Carolina coast. While I have read a little about the Battle of the Atlantic, it was mostly in reference to what transpired in the shipping lanes of the North Atlantic Ocean. I was completely astonished to learn about this piece of history I had never before learned in school and am now eager to find out more. I have been enjoying this entire series and each new historical angle presented in the various books. This one will stay in my mind for a long time and I heartily recommend it!

I really enjoyed ON MY HONOR by PATTY SMITH HALL and highly recommend this novel, first of all for the strong Christian message running through it and the way the main characters hold onto their faith in this traumatic time, also for their courage in facing the danger that has come to the Outer Banks, and for their loyalty and service to their country. The book forms part of the Heroines of WW11 collection and it is easy to see why, as we follow Ginny Mathis and her younger sister Belle, together with the rest of the Girl Scouts, on their quest to do their duty to their country. I like the friendship amongst the girls and Belle’s relationship with Ginny, who is also her Girl Scout leader. There are many secrets and there is much intrigue as they befriend Tim Elliot, a reporter and M6 operative who is washed ashore, and try to help him find Rolf Schmidt, whose knowledge of Germany’s attacks in the Atlantic could save lives and even shorten the war……
The book is full of thrilling adventure, sweet romance and unforgettable characters.

Enjoyable story about a young woman leading a girl scout troop during WWII along the Carolina Coast, and how they cope with the very real fear of enemy invasion,

A little different setting for a WWII novel, set in the OuterBanks area. A group of Girl Scouts, rescue a man who had been injured after a tanker he was on sunk. Belle has a hard time keeping a secret from her older sister, Ginny. A fierce Girl Scout leader and the girls in her troop, are doing what she can to keep everyone safe. Once Ginny knows about the girls secret, the story takes on a different tone. I enjoyed this book, it would be good for young readers.

When I was young and going through elementary school, I wanted to be in the Girl Scouts. Unfortunately, my mom was teaching in a district 20 miles from where I lived, and my dad worked a semi-swing shift. I would have no ride home. I also wanted piano lessons, but we didn't have a piano, but that's another story for another time. 😆

"On My Honor" is part of the Girl Scout Pledge that is recited at every meeting and sets the stage for the premise of this Heroines of WWII series. Ginny has come home right before her last semester of nursing school to help take care of her mother and younger sister. In taking on her younger sister's Girl Scout troop, she begins teaching them the skills they need to be of service during the war, even though they are too young to actively serve in any of the auxiliaries to the military.

After an oil tanker is torpedoed by a German U-Boat, the girls find a man washed up on the beach from the tanker explosion and take him to the cottage by the lighthouse to treat his wounds and give him a warm place to stay. Ginny's sister, Belle, ends up stitching a wound in his side, while Clementine, another troop member resets his dislocated shoulder.

The man, Tim Elliott, had been guarding a German soldier and was taking him to New York because he had vital information about German U-Boat movements. Tim lost the soldier in the explosion and eventually enlisted the help of Ginny to find the soldier. With the help of the Girl Scouts under her charge.

Barbour Books has partnered with quite a few authors to write this series of ordinary women aiding in the homefront during World War II. These books are always interesting with great plots and relatable characters. Patty Smith Hall has done a wonderful job in detailing this plot and making it move at a readable pace.

This is a five star book, two thumbs up, and a crab bake on the beach.

I love WWII history and historical fiction. I had never read about the Battle of the Atlantic or Torpedo Junction off the coast of the Outer Banks. This aspect of the story is very interesting, as well as the facts of how the Girl Scouts/Girl Guides helped in the war effort here and abroad. I would love to read more about both these topics.

The fictional story around the history in this book was engaging, but left some to be desired. It feels like it is geared towards middle school girls. It moved somewhat slowly until the last third of the book, then it got more exciting leading to a swift end. It is not suspenseful or un-put-down-able, but it was a good story.

On My Honor by Patty Smith Hill is a unique perspective on a World War II novel. With the story set in America with the affects of the Battle of Atlantic on the coastline, I had not seen a Christian fiction novel that has taken place during this era. I wanted more of the history of the actual event than a side story that featured more of the romance between the heroine and hero. I do enjoy the idea of the Girl Scout and showing how important girls can be for the plot. On the other hand, the romance was totally unbelievable. I had a hard time believing that the heroine and hero actually had feelings for each other. They both really didn't do anything to attract the other person besides steal a kiss from each other once and a while. Overall, On My Honor by Patty Smith Hill had an interesting concept that I could get behind, but the plot and romance did not deliver.

Probably one of the more relatable books in this series for American readers, and in particular younger readers, this book looks at the homefront battle on the Outer Banks. U-boats were a menace along the eastern seaboard during WW2, but aren't something featured in most history lessons. This book puts them front and center, along with German spies, and other issues that were dealt with on American soil. The Girl Guide aspect brings it down to a younger level, with a refreshingly innocent tone that makes it a lighter read for adults and more accessible for younger readers interested in learning about this era.

A great read with a new to me author.
I think that what I most liked about this book was the setting of the Outer Banks. I learned much about this place.
The author has described this place so well that I could visualize it and pretend that I was there without leaving the comfort of my home.
I really enjoyed Ginny and Belle's journey of growing up and learning to do things on their own. I feel like they deserved a medal of honor of their own.
This book gave Girl Scouts a new meaning to me. The way this version of Girl Scouts puts today's Scouts in a not so good way.
I was in the Scouts and we did nothing but sit around and talk. No earning badges or nothing. I was so disappointed. However; we did sell cookies and oh my those are my most favorite cookies! Particularly Shortbread and Peanut butter patties. Yum!
So yes, I can relate to this story some.
I felt sorry for April. Caught in the middle of some nasty business with her dad.
I didn't like Rolf from the get go. The author did a fantastic job with him. Pretty sneaky if you ask me.
Overall, a great story and one I highly recommend!
Well done for keeping my interest all the way through.
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

This book didn’t quite click for me. I really liked the setting-I’m a sucker for anything set on the Outer Banks - and liked that it drew attention to lesser known worries of a US invasion in WWII. The story elements just didn’t quite come together, though. It was almost as if the author had a checklist of plot and character elements to add in and just marched right down it so ideas were introduced but not fully integrated into the story. The relationship between the two main characters also seemed to move unconvincingly fast.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest opinion.

This is a book in a series that celebrates the unknown heroines of WWII. I liked it - it held my interest, and I wanted to know what would happen, so I kept reading. The author has obviously done her research and I liked that the setting and plot of the story was so original to what is mostly on the market currently. Overall a decent read, and I thank the publisher for the ARC.
