This is a late review, but this book was so cute and clever. I loved the art and the story, and am looking forward to the sequel.

Charming storytelling accompanied by enchanting art. A familiar story made new with a creatively whimsical perspective.

Squire & Knight happen upon a village that is in desperate need. They have a dragon and he is ruining every thing. Knight goes off to slay the dragon and Squire waits in the village. Days go by and Squire does what he does best: read. He researches the history of the village and discovered that not all the stories are as they are told. When he confronts the dragon, he strikes a bargain, but it'll be hard to win if the village attacks first.

This was a fun read. Squire is a character one can easily sympathize with. He's the voice of reason where Knight is brash and impulsive. In a way, how did they two come to be paired up? Squire is behind the stories and their endings but his Knight gets all the credit. Squire impressively saves the day and finds a way for things to work out. Looking forward to more of these adventures! I actually hope we see the dragon again. A fun read for fantasy fans.

It looks like a dragon had destroyed the bridge in a small village at the start of this story. We see Sir Kelton ride off to slay it, while Squire decides to stay behind. When Sir Kelton hasn’t returned for a good while, people fear something bad happened to him. Yet when Squire starts digging deeper into this mystery, they uncover some surprising things. As this graphic novel comes to a close, life for Squire will never be the same.

The plot of this book doesn't bring a lot of surprises based on the set up: a braggart knight and his bookish squire arrive in a town troubled by a dragon. It's classic brains versus brawn as the knight charges into a fight and the squire questions the stories he hears from the villagers. The power of this book is in the artwork. Each panel contributes to the narrative, lending action, details, and dynamic facial expressions. The limited color palate keeps the page from becoming chaotic. It's a book you can read repeatedly and be entertained every time.

Squire and Knight is such a charming graphic novel about the importance of intelligence and doing the right, brave thing no matter who gets the credit! I loved Squire's character and think readers will be satisfied with the storyline. The art style is great and I loved the colour palette of blacks and oranges. It really brings the story to life. I'll keep my eye out for Scott Chantler's work in the future.

This was a fun graphic novel and I have purchased a copy of it for my library. I enjoyed both the artwork and the story. I will recommend this to all my graphic novel readers.

A sweet fantasy mystery that allows listening and thinking things through to be skills worthy of celebration. The art was lovely, and the plot absolutely charming. I will be recommending this book to anyone I can.

This is a short, fun fantasy graphic novel with a mystery at the heart of it. Everyone thinks a dragon is destroying the town, but is something else really happening here? The overlooked Squire thinks he might be able to figure it out. This story is for the soft, quiet kids out there who might be overlooked for not being bold and brash, but have just as much or more to contribute.

Scott Chantler has done it again! He has taken a simple concept, turned it on its head and made it enjoyable for all ages. Squire is a book loving boy accompanying Sir Kelton who loves to brag about all his accomplishments. When they arrive in Bridgetown with its broken bridge and cursed by a dragon, Sir Kelton rides off to slay the dragon while Squire stays behind. After a while he starts exploring the town and investigating the contradictory stories regarding all the disasters that have hit the town. Squire comes to a startling conclusion which he then needs to confirm before Sir Kelton, the townsfolk and the dragon are completely caught up in one final battle. A fun adventure that may be the beginning of a series of adventure!

Thanks Netgalley for the opportunity to read this tale!

Described as a story about a young squire and the knight he serves who always takes the credit, I thought Scott Chantler’s Squire & Knight would be absolutely perfect for fans BBC’s Merlin. The art and colour palettes are skillfully done, but I found this story to be lacking. There is little about the Knight “taking credit” and the story develops quickly and for the most part off the page. I believe the author intends for this to be a series, so there is hope for a more developed relationship between these titular characters and more insight on their personalities. Overall, a quick and cute read for any fantasy fan who has an hour to spare.

This was so much fun in a quick to read package. The characters are fantastic and I enjoyed the middle grade level mystery with clues dropped throughout. I’m of course all for a dog character and the dragon was great. I could have used a little more story and while I loved the dragon depiction, it was hard to read emotion without much facial detail.

Still super cute and something I’d love to have a copy of. Dragons and dogs and knights in shining armor led by a bookish kid. It’s everything I love! This is an easy recommendation to share!

A delightful and pleasant surprise. This is a book that I'm sure fantasy loving kids will adore -- complete with a bumbling idiot of a knight, a clever squire, a ghostly dog, and a snarky dragon. The panel work is well done and even with a minimal color palette, a world is created.

This immediately became one of my favorite graphic novels. I love fantasy and books like "The Sword in the Stone" (cited in the back matter), so naturally I enjoyed this comedic take on that genre. The art is very fun, especially the shopkeeper's three-lensed spectacles and the dragon's gracefully intimidating anatomy. Arthurian comedy gold - a delectable romp for fantasy lovers!

Squire & Knight by Scott Chantler is a middle grade graphic novel currently scheduled for release on May 9 2023. A young squire tackles mysteries, monsters and magic, but the inept knight he serves takes the credit. Every time. Squire is brainy, bookish, and terribly under-appreciated by the brawny, inept knight Sir Kelton, who somehow always gets all the glory. So when the two mismatched heroes find themselves in a cursed village plagued by a demonic dragon, Kelton rides off to slay it and Squire stays behind to catch up on some reading. But Squire starts to notice that something isn’t quite right about this town. Can he uncover its strange secrets?

Squire & Knight is a fun graphic novel that has fantasy, mystery, and character growth. I was glad to read in the author comments that the squire and knight in the story were inspired by T.H. White's 'Wart' and his brother from Sword in the Stone, because that was the vibe I got from the pair as I was reading. I enjoyed getting to follow the squire around as he explores the town and investigates what is happening and how the problems could be solve while the knight goes off ready to fight at a moment's notice. I thought the art and story were perfectly matched and I really liked the art style. I think this graphic novel will appeal to a wide range of readers, from elementary school age readers through adults. It is well balanced in the adventure and mystery, and I enjoyed every moment of the story, and think that others will as well.

Squire & Knight is a well written and drawn story that had me entertained and engaged the entire read. I am looking forward to more.

Squire and Knight volume 1 follows aptly named Squire who works for Sir Kelton, a knight of great renown. They reach a town where a dragon torments and tortures the villagers. Sir Kelton goes to defeat the dragon, but Squire cannot help but think there is something more afoot.

I really enjoyed this fast paced, middle grade fantasy graphic novel. I loved the Squire's capability versus the knight's incapability, as well as his level headedness. I didn't think it was going to end the way it did, but I deeply enjoyed it.

A dragon threatens a town and a knight comes to save the townsfolk. At least, that’s how the story usually goes. What happens when the dragon is just trying to get the news about the weird things he sees from his tower, and the knight gets captured trying to slay him? A cute and funny story about a squire who saves the day by reading unconventional stories and piecing together the puzzle of events that led the town to be in their current predicament. Sometimes brawn is better than brain, but sometimes a situation might require just a little more thought.

A charming graphic novel that is a fantasy adventure combined with a mystery--one that our resourceful squire must solve. The denizens of this universe are delightfully varied creatures intermixed with human residents--and all of them are certain that there is a curse on their town and that the dragon must be at fault. While this delightful tale has little in way of true surprises, it's a great romp of a story that will be a sure fire win with kids who love tales of knights and dragons, especially if not quite the traditional sort.

I personally loved the many armed librarian (demon?) who our squire runs into! Hope to read more adventures of this intrepid youth and his not so brilliant knight master.

I've been diving into graphic novels lately. And so happy I had the pleasure of reviewing this. Scott Chantler is going to be a recurring author now. I was laughing, taking pictures, and having so much fun with this. I hope Squire & Knight becomes adapted. I would love to see this on screen.

Well it's a Scott Chantler book, so I'm pretty predisposed to liking it. Squire & Knight follows a young squire in the service of Sir Kelton. When the two come upon a town suffering from a curse/ghost/dragon. Sir Kelton goes off to fight evil while Squire stays behind in the town to do research. He quickly discovers not all is what it seems in the town. Stories of a long dead, yet tricky wizard, a missing spell book, an enchanted tower nobody can access, and incidents that keep happening, but nobody witnesses are all pieces of a story that Squire must fit together if he wants to . . . save the town?

As always, Chantler's art is great and there's an underlying humor throughout the book that brings levity to the plot and characters. If this is a stand alone, it's solid. If it's a new series, I can definitely see it working out like the Three Thieves series.
