Squire & Knight is a cozy, little, adventure by Scott Chantler where a squire needs to help the knight he serves after he embarks in a very dangerous mission to confront a dragon who is being terrorising a nearby town. But maybe, just maybe, there is something more going on in this town…
As said, this is a short, funny graphic novel where nothing is what it seems. Most of the humour comes from the characters facial expressions, which are just perfect in every panel. Sir Kelton is a caricature of what a knight should be, but he doesn’t seem to notice. Squire knows what everybody thinks of him, but he also knows he is the only one that can save everybody. Shadow is a dog, or at least, he used to be a dog. And the dragon… well, you will need to read Squire & Knight to know more things about him, and I assure you, you will not be disappointed.
In fact, the only thing this graphic novel is lacking could be… more pages, more adventures. It really feels as the first chapter of an amazing, long, fantasy tale where the characters slowly evolve and find their true place. It really leaves the reader wanting more.
Here’s hoping the author returns to this world and shows us more of it.

I love a graphic novel that turns the expected on its head. This was a great example of that. I really enjoyed the characters, especially the dragon. I hope the Squire gets to use his intelligence and deductive skills to solve more mysteries in the future.

Off Sir Kelton goes to save the day, leaving Squire to twiddle his thumbs. But Squire has a curious mind and discovers something about the town is amiss.
This is a fun story with humorous characters, great artwork, and is appropriate for all readers.

So many of us have met people that take credit for things that they didn’t do–this is a story just as that where the knight, who claims to be a hero, needs his squire who he often looks down on. Filled with monsters and magic, this graphic novel is a fun read.

Middle-grade suitable fantasy graphic novel about a young, bookish squire whose genius is not always appreciated by either the knight or the communities he serves. There's nothing particularly special or objectionable about this one and it appears to be a stand alone work.

Squire & knight tells us the story about a knight that is not so good at his job, and a squire that is good at his, at least in the information department. They arrive to a town where the villagers are scared and poor because of a dragon. But this is not your typical dragon (yes, it breaths fire, likes gold and eat sheeps, but it also talks and gives time for que squire to figure something out).
I know that this comic is midddlegrade, but I enjoyed nonetheless. It's a very funny story, easy and quick to read, that is going to give you the time of your life.

A beautifully illustrated and wonderfully told story of an under appreciated squire. Squire uses his brain and his kind heart to help the town out of their troubles, an antithesis to the knight who is ready to kill anything appearing monstrous without a single thought.

Squire & Knight is a very fast, very fun story. I adored the artwork and the muted color palette! There is a lot of heart and humor packed into a quick tale of a squire using his brains and books to help a town seemingly plagued by bad luck. I think my 8-year-old will really enjoy this one!

A very nice graphic book that I read in one sitting. I was hook to the story after the fist page! Adult and kids alike will have fun reading the adventure of this brainy squire and his bothersome knight.

This was a fun, fantasy-style adventure graphic novel perfect for all ages! I planned to only read a few pages before I was sucked into the world and completed the story in one sitting! The characters were charming, I loved the use of light and colour within the pages, and the mystery was brilliant.
If you like dragons, magic, undead doggos - this is the perfect one for you.

Squire & Knight takes classic fantasy elements and adds a twist, resulting in a funny, heart-warming story. Squire is the put-upon squire of Sir Kelton, a knight who is more talk than action. Squire prefers books, himself. The story accelerates when the pair arrive in a seemingly-abandoned town. The villagers claim a dragon is responsible for all their troubles. Sir Kelton sets off to slay it, while Squire stays behind. A nerd after my own heart, Squire checks out the town archives and begins to put together the pieces of a more complicated story. Without spoiling too much, negotiation and cooperation save the day where violence fails.

Loved this middle/lower-grade graphic novel about a young squire and a dragon that is destroying the town. Can't wait for it to come out to hand to all the kids I know.

I would first like to thank Netgalley and First Second Publishers for sending me this E-arc in return for an honest review.

I quite enjoyed this tale, it was cute and funny with the banter between the knight and the village. As we see the main character try and solve the villagers problems, and if it is really all related to the dragon that is looming nearby. It was a quick read, and one I know many children will enjoy reading. It made me laugh, and wish there was more to read.

In Squire & Knight, a Squire follows his braggart of a knight, Sir Kelton, to a desolate town decimated by a dragon. While the knight goes off to slay the dragon, the Squire begins to investigate around town and discovers that a possible curse could be the real culprit behind the town's misfortune. Squire & Knight is incredibly fun. It had me laughing and smirking the whole way through. Scott Chantler's wink and a nudge towards Sherlock Holmes and Dungeons and Dragons pays off in this graphic adventure by twisting common fantasy tropes to great comedic effect. The character designs are brilliant, from the sleek, black dragon to the monstrous archival clerk clueing the reader into the story's main theme - that things are not all what they appear to be. The sparse, muted palette of grays, blacks, and shades of orange brings to life an autumnal fantasy world. The pacing at the end felt rushed and as a result, the mystery's solution is not wholly satisfying. As a reader, I wanted to spend more time in the world Chantler had created. Squire, a boy who solves the mystery using observation and knowledge, is a character I hope we get to see more of.

This is a charming graphic novel about a blustery knight, his clever squire, an amateur magician, and a slightly bemused dragon. The story was satisfying and funny and the art was well-drawn. I will be putting this book into the hands of our graphic novel fantady readers.
