She's a reliable queen of the genre for a reason! Complex characters, multiple timelines and motives all converge in an ending you'll be invested in.

I have read many of her books including The Stranger Inside, but this one was my least favorite. The plot was a bit too disjointed. It explores the complexities of family, secrets, and genealogy, with a focus on the characters’ personal struggles and the eerie atmosphere of the isolated cabin. In theory, this should work, but I just couldn’t get into it. This book is mysterious, dark, medium-paced, and focuses on character flaws.

Hannah is a good character but has surrounded herself with awful people- her brother is a jerk, her best friend is vapid, her husband is keeping secrets. When they all go to a secluded cabin rumored to be haunted, with a big storm coming through, things don’t go as well as anticipated. Meanwhile, there’s an entire backstory of a seemingly unrelated character. And of course, it all comes together in the end, but this one just didn’t work for me.

I honestly had such high hopes for this book and BAM, it was just the half sister trying to kill her brother. And it almost seemed to convenient that only she died and the cops came in at a perfect moment. I did love the back story and loved how Henry fit into the story.. just wished it was more thriller than stated.

I did also listen to the audiobook version and it was good!

This was requested when I first found out about NetGalley and I had requested so many ARCs that I could not get to all of them before they were archived. I really wanted to get to this one, as it seemed interesting. If I can find this somewhere for a reasonable price, I will try to get it! I am giving this book three stars, as I don't want to give it a good or bad rating, since I did not get to it and we have to leave a star rating.

Lisa Unger is just a staple in the thriller genre. I still haven't met anyone who does not like her books. They are action-packed and she is able to always pull those cliffhangers that leave you gasping for air in the middle of the night.

A loving brother has arranged a luxurious weekend in the wilds for himself, sister, their good friend plus partners.
So what could possibly happen, apart from that old chestnut of a storm - well quite a bit actually! This is another of those books which would be greatly improved by cutting out a huge chunk. Endless descriptions of things that don’t really matter and because of that it takes ages to get to where this novel actually starts. Characters who shouldn’t have more than a mention in passing get starring roles. Didn’t care for any of the characters, they were all as bad as each other. In a nutshell, this is a family drama but maybe not in the way people would expect. Not really a thriller which is how it’s categorised. I liked the idea behind it despite some unpleasant topics.

A thriller that had my spine tingling! With complex characters and a haunting setting, the author has created a page turning physcological thriller. It's so intense that I felt tight as a piece of string. The plot is deliciously dark and deeply disturbing.

This was a hard read for me. The disjointed POVs were really distracting especially because it takes so long to understand their importance. The one entire POV that was more or less a red herring could have been eliminated in my humble opinion. The characters were also pretty unlikeable as a whole.

HOWEVER, somewhere are little over halfway through the book when we started to learn how the origins test was really about i started getting more interested and wanted to know more.

Ultimately, I'm glad I read this and am thankful I was given that opportunity, but I am more likely to recommend other books of Lisa's to friends.

This was suspenseful and I enjoyed. At times the story plot was hard to follow but would still recommend.

This book was all over the place for me. Normally I LOVE multiple POVs and timelines in a story, but this one has so much going on that it truly felt like 3 separate books to me. However, that was not the problem for me. Where things fell apart is that this book was essentially a book about genetics and eugenics which is not storyline I ever want to read. Was the concept interesting? One could argue yes. But for me, if I had known how much of the book was about genetics/eugenics, then I wouldn’t have picked it up. I personally felt like what happened in the synopsis was only 25% of what ACTUALLY happened in the book which really disappointed me.

I love Lisa Unger. Where she goes, I will follow. Wherever she takes us as readers, I'm on board. She's an auto-read author for me and I can't wait to see what she writes next!

I was really looking forward to this story but sadly a few things stopped me from enjoying it as much as I hoped I would.
It being written in the first and third person made it more difficult than it needed to be to connect with the characters.
And speaking of character, these were some of the most unlikeable that I have encountered in a while.
I need there to be some redeeming qualities to truly care about what happens to them and sadly in this type of genre not caring what happens to them isn't ideal.
There were also just far too many characters in general.
It was just a bit all over the place, from the multiple POVs to hopping back and forward in time.
I wanted to love this but unfortunately I didn't.

When you need a good thriller to take your mind off of reality, Lisa Unger never fails to deliver! There's a dynamic cast of characters here, and loads of foreshadowing at play right from the beginning. A family with secrets decides to go to a secluded destination to unwind and reconnect...what could go wrong? I found myself immediately trying to pick out the antagonist. There's some twists and turns along the way, and even a red herring or two. I was not overly shocked by the ending, but that is OK. This book really kept my interest, and I liked how there were many elements of both revenge and justice because nothing is more frustrating than seeing a narcissist go free! Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six by Lisa Unger is a psychological thriller.

My Synopsis:    (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Hannah and Bruce leave behind their 15-month old little girl GiGi, for the first time.  But they are going to be staying at a luxury cabin called The Elegant Overlook for a much needed break.  Hannah is a little concerned that the cabin is so secluded.  It's 20 miles down a winding road to the nearest town, and other than a small second cabin, with no neighbours but the wild forest.

Hannah's best friend Cricket and her new boyfriend Joshua join them at the lavish cabin, as do Hannah's brother Mako and his wife Liza, who are the ones that organized and paid for this trip.  Always the best for Mako!

They have a personal chef, who tells them a bit about the rather unpleasant history of the place, but things are about to get worse than a few ghosts.  There is a wicked storm on the way.  But unknown to the guests, there is already someone more deadly on the premises, and they are out for revenge.


My Opinions:
The book is about secrets and lies.  All of the characters were keeping secrets, and none of them were perfect, but that made them more real.   The book is is mainly about what truly constitutes family.  Is it blood, or is it the people you surround yourself with.  It asks the question: Can bad traits be carried through bloodlines.

The story is told in different timelines, and by different people.  There may have been a little much going on, but it was quite straight-forward.  It was interesting how Henry's story developed and merged with the guests at the cabin.

The plot was good, if somewhat predictable, but it was still fascinating, and kept me reading.

It was somewhat repetitive, and a little long, but overall, it was a very entertaining book.

This book was so good! I finished in two days. I loved the suspense and was shocked to see the couples go against eachother. The end result will have you shook!

It would be impossible for me to review this novel without spoilers so here we go, lots of spoilers ahead... I would only read ahead if you've either read it already or know for sure you will not be reading it.






































Wow do these characters suck. Other than Henry and Piper and their story line, they're all terrible. At first I wanted to dnf. This is one of my first audiobooks and I was listening at 1.5 speed so I thought maybe my issue was with not being used to the pace and hearing it in someone else's voice. But as I went on I realized the characters suck because they're terrible people so it clicked and suddenly I couldn't put it down. This is one where I rooted for the killer at a certain point and was slightly disappointed with the ending but I want to expand on that.

Mako, his sister Hannah, his ex Cricket, and all their significant others are hard people to like. Mako (actually Michael but also one of those guys) immediately gave me a creep vibe and I hated and I mean *hated* how his sister and ex who is also his sister's bestie, not only made excuses for him but actively covered up crimes for him. I hated them all for so many reasons.

When I realized that this was by design because we were meant to feel this way about them it was an ah-ha moment for sure. Genius writing on the part of the author, really, because I *really hated* these people.

I am slightly disappointed in the end where the women got off by making a Facebook post? I mean come on, but I'm also thinking that's probably what the author was going for. I get women are always made to be punished for men's actions (and I agree) but I feel like in this situation they should have been punished for something, at least more than 'losing some friends over the Facebook post'. I couldn't have rolled my eyes harder there and based on the earlier twisted narrative I think this was the goal of this part.

I do feel like the sex scenes were slightly more graphic than made sense for the level of detail elsewhere in the novel. Again, one of my first forays into audiobooks so it may have just been the fact that it was being read out loud.

I would definitely read more from this author and would recommend their work to those who like to hate the characters, it does make for a more interesting ride.

Three couples rent a gorgeous luxury cabin in the woods for a weekend. They are hoping for a weekend of fun, relaxation, and catching up, What starts as a great weekend, quickly takes a turn for the worse... It seems every character is hiding a huge secret.

I enjoyed the creepy cabin setting. We learn early on that the cabin has a spooky post. I don't always enjoy multiple POV's, but it worked in this novel. At times the story felt a bit messy/all over the place, but by the time we reached the end, I found that I genuinely enjoyed this book. There are definitely some mixed reviews on this one - if you are a fan of thrillers with some complex overlays, then this one if for you.

This is a thrilling story is told in 1st and 3rd person - I love a multiple point of view thriller but the different viewpoints took me a little bit to connect with the characters but I do understand why the author did this.

This was an exciting book that moved quickly and I was very invested to see what happened. I would just say that the end revealed a ton and everything wrapped up a bit too nicely for me - I felt it should have been a tad messier but that's just my person preference.

Overall this was a fun popcorn thriller that would be a great palette cleanser after reading a heavier book.
