My thanks to Harper and NetGalley for an ebook ARC of this short title to be published in April.
Sitting on a fence on this one.
On one hand, its historical interest, and that it is 2 pieces Kundera wrote (one a speech/talk/lecture at a conference, the other an earlier published essay) does make it publish-worthy.
OTOH, the 2 pieces are over 50 and 35 years old each. So, we do see that Russia has not changed much since 1983. But perhaps an update on how Hungary and Poland moved from rebellious freedom fighting populations to neo-fascist elected governments would be appreciated.
And Kundera's thoughts on what it is to be a "small nation", particularly in Central Europe, are worth consideration. It is just that they need filling out and updating here and now (there are some notes for them pieces).
Speaking of "filling out", I deeply appreciate the free ebook ARC here, since Harpers is choosing to charge readers $25 for a book coming in at 96 pp - of which maybe 60 are actually written by Kundera. These pieces are not that important that they need to be published on their own. Nothing else could be found to add to the volume?
Kundera's writing, especially his thoughts on Central/Eastern Europe and their relationship with Russia, are worth reading. While his insights from 50 years ago, and how some are still true today, are worth a read, some of his other comments are so slim and outdated it is hard to justify paying the price for this also slim volume.
