I loved this book, and I hope there’s more to come!

It was fun and new to have a doctor/coroner as a lead, and I really enjoyed following her as she went from her past working in a fast-paced ER to being the doctor (and coroner) for a small Scottish village. I also got a chuckle from Dr. Em trying to figure out the role of the coroner (thank you, BritBox haha).

The premise, quirky yet endearing small-town characters, and mystery made this book hard to put down.

Thank you to #NetGalley and #CrookedLaneBooks for the ARC in exchange for an honest review,

Dr Emilia McRoy recently arrived in the small island of Sea Isle in Scotland is finding
her new environment to be totally different from the busy ER she faced in the States.
Emilia wanted a peaceful pace plus she was running away from personal tragedy. She did
not expect open antagonism from one man, followed by a murder, a general cover up from
the entire community and wheels within wheels.

Being the doctor she was entitled to deem the death suspicious despite the Chief decrying
her stand. Forced subsequently to accept that things were not as they seemed on several
fronts, Emilia was also under threat with several attempts on her life. The story was unusual,
the setting was beautiful and the characters were varied and quirky in turns. A fery charming read.

often i take a chance by requesting a galley from an unknown author on #netgalley, and often i am so rewarded with a terrific story. "#anamericaninscotland" by lucy connelly is one of those chances taken - it's delightful. some exceptionally chilling moments, this was a hard read to put down. i guessed the villain before our intrepid heroine, and my only quibble might be that for someone so smart, she missed the big tells! look forward to more from ms. connelly.

p.s. thanks to #netgalley for the ARC.

Making new friends while escaping a shattering heartbreak half the globe away.
From a busy ER in Seattle to being the only doctor in a small, isolated town in The Highlands where the nearest hospital is a helicopter ride away is only slightly less dramatic than finding the first real friends Emilia has ever had. And who is this omnipresent and unsettling "laird" who runs this small world and seems to be as rich as Croesus. The characters are each so very real, and with some of the descriptions I swear I could smell the coffee and even the stew on the Aga. The plot is very tight and full of suspense, complete with some amazing twists and dramatic red herrings (and lots of blood!). The publisher's blurb isn't bad, but I don't want to go overboard in summarizing. LOVED IT!
I requested and received an EARC from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. THANK YOU!

This was such a lovely refreshing book! I loved how Ms Connelly made even the atmosphere in Sea Isle a character in this novel. I loved the plot, pacing and all the food references! Please write more!

This was a cute read, but it's all very fantastical (not in the ways of fairies and unicorns, but in the Elon Musk-beyond billionaire way). Emilia McRoy has been hired as the new doctor in a picturesque village in Scotland where everything seems to be owned and funded by the wealthy laird..who's also the chief constable and bossy and sexy (of course). This has a predictable rom-com feel to it but it's a pleasant way to spend the afternoon.

Thanks to Crooked Lane Books for access to a digital ARC via NetGalley.

When the high body counts and grit of traditional mysteries and suspense gets to be too much, I love to get lost in a good cozy mystery. Reading An American in Scotland allows you to get lost the a dream scenario for a burnt out doctor from Seattle named Emilia McRoy. Dr. Roy gets hired to move to a small, Scottish town to take over a practice (and residence) in a converted church with every bell and whistle she could want. The practice comes with highly competent staff and a wealthy benefactor paying the bills. I was on board the second the good doctor recognized her devol kitchen and mentioned the Aga range.

There is a requirement that you suspend some disbelief about Emelia's office and living situation to fully enjoy the ride that Lucy Connelly takes us on. That might actually be the strategy the author used to have us breeze by a couple clues to the guilty party in the murder that takes place in this story. There is a blatancy in the writing that might have you thinking the amazing thing you just witnessed (Land Rover? Helicopter? MRI machine?) is just more of the cherries being heaped on top of the sundae.

There are two potential love interests for Emelia, but unlike many series, she is a widow who has no interest in dating. It'll be interesting to see how her feelings evolve as she gets settled in her new home.

All in all, this was a fun start to a new series and it'll be interesting to see how Emelia navigates her new, fancy life in Scotland.

Note: There was an odd jump between chapters 26 and 27 that might have been a glitch. An incident was introduced at the end of chapter 26 and chapter 27 started the next day. The incident never played out. There were also a few continuity issues that were distracting.

I knew I would enjoy this book as soon as I saw the title because I love stories that take place in Scotland, especially from the point of view of a foreigner. The main character Dr. Emilia McRoy moved from Seattle to Sea Isle, Scotland to start a new life. Her new life is a mixture of meaningful work as a village doctor and the local coroner, and adrenaline fueled adventure solving a murder mystery while trying to stay alive. Her new home is an idyllic village with a close-knit community, and she lives and works in an old church. This book has a beautiful world building and well developed characters, lots of excitement, some romance, and humor. I absolutely loved it despite the fact that Dr. Emilia McRoy was extremely naive for someone who worked in the ER in Seattle and lived in the USA before moving to Scotland. It did not bother me at all but I might be a little biased because I adore Scottish settings in books. This was the most delightful cozy mystery I have ever read so far. I really hope that this is the start of a new series because I would love to return to the Sea Isle. ⁣⁣
Thank you NetGalley for this lovely ARC that was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

An exceptionally good beginning to a new mystery series. Set on the coast of Scotland, Dr. Em has come to begin a new life. Having finished the book I am ready to go to Scotland and visit these wonderful people.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and the author for a chance to read the ARC for this book. I truly enjoyed this book and think that it beautifully portrays Scotland. If you didn't pine to visit before, you will after reading this book. The main character, Emilia McRoy is well written as a strong, independent woman, and I felt her interactions with other characters and the setting were described beautifully. I recommend this to anyone who loves a little mystery and romance together!

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and the author for a chance to read the ARC for this book, An American in Scotland by Lucy Connelly.
There isn’t one thing about this book that I didn’t absolutely love! I adore visiting Scotland and I think the author has captured it’s vibe perfectly. She has set this novel in the most idyllic Scottish place and now I want to move there even more than I did before.
The characters were so enjoyable, the way they interacted with each other and seemed very genuine. I love the main character Dr Emilia McRoy. She is smart, tough, capable, kind and has a great sense of humour. It’s nice when the heroine in the novel is a strong role model.
One downside to the book is it made me hungry…more than once. The author describes food in a way that makes me want to try and track down the item in question immediately. This book was a great combination of mystery, medicine, Scottish life and a bit of romance and I really hope there will be more of these books from this author! I am also a fan of BritBox and Acorn TV murder mysteries and I feel like this novel was the printed equivalent of one. Just so good!

Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for a copy of "An American In Scotland" by Lucy Connelly in exchange for my honest opinion.

We are introduced to Dr. Emilia McRoy who has left her life in Seattle behind to move to Sea Isle, Scotland. Her new office and home are in an old church. She also learns that the doctor is also the coroner. She really didn't read the fine print in her contract. No sooner has she arrived than she is involved in a murder mystery. She works closely with Deputy Chief Constable Ewan Campbell who is also the Mayor and Laird.

The story moves along at a quick pace and Emilia is getting close to the truth when she receives threatening notes, and her sleuthing almost gets her killed - several times. Who among her new friends is out to hurt her? There is mystery, suspense and even some possible romance.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Connelly's writing and I will be recommended this book to all my friends. I sincerely hope that there will be a new book soon as I read this one in one sitting, I simply could not put it down.

In the last months of 2022, the best mysteries I read were often cozies. Cozy mystery authors, including Lucy Connelly, have added a depth to their books, sometimes a darkness and reality, that wasn’t always present in cozies. An American in Scotland is an intriguing kick-off to A Scottish Isle Mystery series. The characters, particularly the protagonist, Dr. Emilia McRoy, are well-developed, but not without flaws. The setting is atmospheric and chilling at times, with the rain and wind.

Dr. Emilia McRoy spent fifteen years doing emergency medicine in Seattle. But, there’s no longer anything for her there; no family, and only a burned out career. She was recruited for the position of general practitioner in Sea Isle, Scotland. She was eager to move halfway around the world. It didn’t hurt that her recent DNA test showed her relatives came from that part of the world. But, maybe she should have read her thirty-page contract a little better.

Em is surprised to learn her new practice and home are in a deconsecrated church with a cemetery in the backyard. She has so much to learn about Sea Isle, and the people in the local pub, The Pig & Whistle, can tell her stories. For instance, why does a man named Smithy refuse to drink in the pub when there’s a McRoy at the bar? Three hours later, she takes shelter in a small hut during a rainstorm, and finds Smithy’s body. She’s about to run for help when she smacks into Ewan Campbell, the constable, mayor, laird of Sea Isle, and her new boss. Ewan has a second surprise for her. Dr. Emilia McRoy’s contract says she’s the local coroner.

When Ewan suggests Smithy’s death was a drunken accident, and Em insists he was murdered, they’re on the way to the first of many conflicts. Em is determined to find answers to her first case as coroner, although her only training comes from hours watching murder mysteries on BritBox and Acorn TV.

Em is reluctant to get too close to people after the tragedies in her life, but the people in Sea Isle work their way into her heart. She finds two people who take care of her house and garden, female friends she never had before, and a town eager to welcome their new doctor. The setting is attractive for a mystery series, but, if you read for character, as I do, you’ll find a well-written, appealing cast.

I hope An American in Scotland finds its audience. I want to return to Sea Isle with Dr. Emilia McRoy..

I absolutely loved it! This book caught my attention from the very beginning and held it throughout the entire book. This book was full of drama, heartache and suspense! The narration was outstanding! It will keep you entertained! The author did an amazing job with the character builds and plot!

I could smell the salt air and pine in Sea Isle through the wonderfully vivid descriptions in what I look forward to as the first installment of a new cozy series set in Scotland. Dr. Emilia McRoy is beginning over as the town physician, and, much to her consternation when she stumbles on a dead body, it’s coroner. She becomes the target of a killer when she is convinced, unlike the local constable, that the death wasn’t an accidental fall by a drunken Smithy, but murder. With new friends to help her and a number of suspects Em isn’t going to back down. An enjoyable read with likable characters, I will definitely be on the lookout for the next book.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy, I enjoyed being transported to Em’s new home in Scotland.

What a fun start to a series! This is like my fantasy--moving to a Scottish village and having a church-turned-home forced on me, along with finding immediate best friends who decorate said home, an assistant who's so skilled she's practically magical, and an entire village who's thrilled you're there because they need a resident doctor. That would be perfect! Well, except for the murder.

There are fun bits of humor as Emilia discovers how things work in her new home--the big walk-in freezer is for bodies, not veggies, for example. Em also has two possible romantic interests, both impossibly kind and promising, but the romance angle is more hinted at than explored in depth, so it doesn't derail the mystery.

This book has an engaging mystery plot, a setting I love, a main character I can relate to, and a resolution that leaves me satisfied. I can't wait to visit Sea Isle, Scotland again in the next installment.

I read this one in two sittings it was so good. I love that it is based in Scotland. Dr. Emilia McRoy left Seattle behind after accepting a job in Sea Isle, Scotland. She is hoping to settle and live a quiet and slower lifestyle. It doesn't last long when she finds a dead body.
This was so good and I loved every moment of it.

ER doctor, Emilia McRoy has taken a job in the village of Sea Isle, Scotland. She hopes that leaving her hectic life in Seattle will give her time to stop and smell the roses. Unfortunately, she stumbles over a dead body almost immediately after arriving and has to work with the local constable, a rather annoying man, Laird Ewan Campbell. And in a town this small, the village doctor is also the coroner, so she’s responsible for the body, which has gone missing. All in all, Emilia’s new job looks to be a relaxing as a bagpipe solo. This is an enjoyable cozy accompanied by a beautiful setting and a cast of quirky characters

Emilia leaves heartache behind when she leaves the US and heads to Scotland to become a village doctor. Finding a dead man murdered the first night sets off a lot of tongues wagging. The fun of small town life. Not knowing who to trust, she jumps right in and starts asking questions, which of course puts her in the line of the killer. Enjoyed this one, and the village characters. Would recommend.
