Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I am normally not the biggest fan of nonfiction but i was very curious about this subject matter and how the author would approach it. I think even if you are interested in going through pregnancy or not, there is a lot of interesting information and stories to hear about.

I loved this book. It was absolutely fascinating, and also kind of heartbreaking. I loved hearing each woman’s individual story just as much as I loved hearing about the history of pregnancy, birth, obstetrics, and midwifery in the United States. This was such a well researched, well written book.

I was intrigued to read this book having given birth almost 1.5 years ago.

The book takes place in the USA and stats based off healthcare in the USA which differs from Canada where I am from.

Midwifery has been around for ever and continues to grow. There are still many reasons why someone may choose an OB over a midwife or home birth over a hospital birth.

Many of the stats in this book shocked me and many didn’t. It saddens me that women only get 6 weeks of mar Leave. At 6 weeks post partum there was no way I was ready to rerun to work. I had a hard enough time at 12 months!

I also guess I was naive not to know that people or color many times are discriminated against in health care. They also have a higher chance of negative outcomes during and after pregnancy.

It’s amazing how different everyone’s pregnancy/labour and post partum journey is. No one fits all box.

White I enjoyed this I did find it slow at times and it took me awhile to get thru the book.
