After meeting on-line, Seb travels to Australia to meet Caroline in person. They feel an instant connection and not only get married, but Caroline accompanies her new husband back to England where his parents own and operate a village pub. While Caroline knows that the initial meeting with her new in-laws will be somewhat awkward, she isn’t prepared for Seb’s mother’s reaction. Lilian is angry and hostile towards her new daughter-in-law and it’s obvious that she’s unhappy with her son’s unexpected marriage. In the days that follow, it is clear that her new family has secrets but Caroline does, too.

The Daughter-in-Law slowly builds in suspense, as the story is told from different points of view. There are several twists that make the story interesting, although the final twist didn’t seem necessary and, for me, didn’t really add to the overall appeal of the book. The characters are varied but I didn’t particularly empathize with any of them, including Caroline. Nevertheless, I enjoyed Ms Boland’s latest book and will definitely be on the lookout for her next endeavor.

I found it so compelling right from the first page. The Daughter-in-Law is so fast paced and will keep you engaged from beginning to end! What a great book!

I love Shalini's work, her books never fail to disappoint and they always leave me wanting more.

I thought the story was brilliantly well written and the characters are all so very well portrayed and believable. I was gripped and sitting on the edge of my seat with ever chapter, right to the very end. As for that sneaky twist come the end, absolutely loved it, never saw it coming lol.

I've said it before but I'm going to say it again, Shalini has such a way with words that she just draws you in right from the beginning, keeps you enthralled throughout and leaves you with bated breath right to the very end. Which is exactly what she did with this latest book of hers.

So if you are looking for a book that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat in eager anticipation as to what will happen next, with a shocker of a twist come the end and be completely captivated throughout, then you really need to read this book

Amazing twist and turn. Could not put this book down . Great thriller , a must read, will not disappoint.

I am a big fan of Shalini Boland’s books and this one certainly didn’t disappoint. This is a complex story of two families. We read about Amy and Michelle Nelson. They are sisters who live with their parents. Amy is studying medicine which her parents are extremely proud of but they are unhappy when Michelle, the younger sister, wants to study art. This leads to a family fallout and Michelle leaves home cutting off all ties with her family. Caroline and Seb are travelling to the UK to live after meeting on social media and marrying only a few months later in Australia where Caroline lived. They are returning to live at the Fletcher family pub run by Seb’s family. His parents are overjoyed to see him but are really shocked when they realise that he has brought a wife home with him as they nothing about the marriage. Lilian, Seb’s mum, takes an instant dislike to Caroline and makes that quite clear. The family pub is run by Lilian and Brian, Seb’s father and also Felix, Seb’s brother who lives nearby with his wife and baby. As Caroline tries to fit in she find out that Seb has been keeping a huge secret that he has been married before but we also learn that Caroline has secrets of her own and we discover how the two families are connected. This is an addictive read, with so any twists and turns and revelations. A gripping read.

This book has me hooked from the beginning. What a beginning it was. Exciting plot. It was so different and fresh to other books I’ve read. It was very well written. Twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your chair

Seb Fletcher's wife left him for another man several years earlier. He is finally able to move on and meets a young woman from Australia online. He flies to meet Carolyn in Australia and after a whirlwind romance, they marry and head to England where Seb's family owns and operates a pub. What Carolyn didn't know was that they would be living with Seb's family above the pub. Carolyn gets a very cold reception form Lillian, Seb's mother, and the pub employees. It seems that she is being sabotaged left, right and centre and Seb and his brother Felix don't really stand up for her very much either. Will this marriage last? Will Carolyn ever be welcomed into Seb's family? Will we find out who the body was that was at the beginning of the story?

The Daughter-in-Law is told from various POVs: Carolyn, Lillian (mother-in-law), and sisters, Amy and Meg. There was a past and present storyline and I was curious how it was all going to fit together and how all the narrators fit together. I felt terrible for Carolyn. Having no one on her side, no one to make her feel welcome and being blamed for things that were not her fault would have made me jump on the next plane back to Australia. Lillian was a piece of work. She ruled the roost and I surprised that her husband and two sons put up with her, as well as why Seb's first wife left. As the story continues and the mystery is revealed, I was shocked. I was not expecting the twists that came and revealed all including how all the characters are tied together and the final reveals. Another wonderful thriller by Shalini Boland. I did a read/listen with this book and enjoyed the narration by Katie Villa. I recommend this book if you enjoy thrillers and mysteries in either format.

I have read other books by this author and whilst this wasn't my favourite overall, it was a good solid mystery. Some interesting twists and mini cliff hangers as you read. I didn;t particularly root for any character but would reccommend the read

Loved this book , a really good mystery read with lots of twists and turns. A brilliant story with really good characters that kept you guessing to the very end , would highly recommend this book to anybody who likes a good thriller.

This was a good slow build thriller with a bunch of little twists thrown in. Overall, it is a very strong book with a good amount of suspense. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because I felt the twists were slightly predictable (although they werent meant to be) and the final twist at the end wasnt necessary. Overall, I would recommend this book if you like suspense whodunnit thrillers about family dysfunction and a strong female protagonist.

Normally I love a book with a bitchy mother/mother-in-law so when I saw a book from Shalini Boland about one, i was so excited. But something about this book was very lacking. Not up to the authors usual standard. Its not going to put me off her future books. This one was just a hiccup from a normally brilliant author.

It seems that I am on a Shalini Boland reading binge. I have finished two of her books in the past week. It’s not surprising though as Shalini Boland is one of my favourite authors. Her books are always entertaining and engaging and keep me guessing til the very end.

The Daughter In Law is a psychological thriller about Seb and Caroline. The two met online and had a whirlwind romance that led to a quick marriage. The only problem is that Seb’s family were unaware he was married. So you can imagine the scene when Seb returns home to the UK from an Australian holiday with a surprise bride. Seb’s Mum, Lillian was not pleased and gave Caroline a very cool and unwelcome reception. Seb tries to smooth things over but it was rather difficult as Seb and Caroline now live in a room in the family home above the Family run pub. Yikes!

While Caroline tries to settle in and help out around the pub things go from bad to worse. She doesn’t get along with her mother in law, nor her sister in law and a few of the bar staff and patrons. On top of that Caroline discovers a huge secret that Seb has hidden from her. She confronts him but he refuses to discuss it. Caroline is miserable but is determined to get to the bottom of all the secrets and lies even if it may lead to her demise.

The Daughter In Law is told from a few POV but the main focus is Caroline and Lillian. Though there were several characters in the novel, I found it easy to follow along. There were several plot twists, one I figured out but the last few completely caught me off guard. I was so shocked. Well done Shalini Boland for writing such a captivating domestic psychological thriller. You really got me with that ending 🤯🙌🏻!

Any book by Shalini Boland is a slam dunk. The Daugher In Law was no exception. A fast past, can’t put down, thrilling good time. Highly recommend!

Really enjoyed this story told from several different viewpoints.. the twists were interesting and unexpected to say the least..

The opening of The Daughter-in-Law will grab you and keep you flipping the pages late into the night. Caroline has met Sebastian online and they've been chatting that way for a couple of months. Sebastian wants to meet Caroline even though she's in Australia and he's in England so he takes some time off and surprises her. Sebastian is head over heels and ends up bringing Caroline home as his wife!! Seb lives above his family's pub restaurant with his parents. Caroline isn't sure that's the best situation for her, but doesn't want to rock the boat after moving halfway across the world to be with her new hubby.

Once Seb and Caroline arrive home, they break the news that they're married. Seb's parents, Lilian and Brian, don't seem thrilled over the news. Lillian seems downright angry over the news and treats Caroline coldly. Brian is more mellow and tries to get to know Caroline. Caroline has worked as a bar manager back in Australia so working at the family pub should be a breeze. However, Lillian tries to make Caroline's life miserable at work and ends up putting her in the back on kitchen duty. She doesn't trust or like Caroline and can't believe Seb has married someone so quickly.

Seb's brother, Felix, has been away working on a private yacht as a chef. He is normally the head chef at the pub. When he returns, he finds out that Caroline will be working in the kitchen as a prep person. Caroline made the mistake of standing up for herself and twisting a customer's arm when he grabbed her butt. Lillian was horrified as the rich young man threatened to sue. Instead of sticking up for Caroline and understanding why Caroline did what she did, she sent her out of the pub and gave the boy and his friends their meals and drinks for free. This made Caroline very angry as it sent the wrong message to the boy and to everyone watching.

Felix and Caroline get along well as tension between Caroline and Seb rise. She wants to move out of his parents apartment and into their own place. Caroline and Seb haven't had sex as she says she's not comfortable with his parents in the next room. Seb thinks this will blow over as Caroline gets more comfortable, but will it? Someone in the pub mentions Amy to Caroline. Who is Amy and where has she gone? Why is everyone in the family so upset when Caroline mentions Amy? Caroline wants to know more. Someone in the family is hiding something and they don't want the secret getting out. Will Caroline be safe? Will she find out the secret about Amy?

This is a very good mystery as the suspense builds until you can't turn the pages fast enough. I highly recommend this book and rate it 4 stars. There are a few twists that you won't see coming that make this book fun to read. When they return to England and go to the family pub where both sons and parents have their own job roles. The Mother in Law is not overwhelming in her greeting to the new wife.
Everyone involved has a secret and it isn’t until the story is near the end, when all the pieces come together that we found out what has happened
