THE GIRLFRIEND is the eighteenth psychological crime thrillers by bestselling author K.L. Slater, a gripping psychological thriller from the author of the number one bestseller The Marriage. This novel ticked all the boxes for me: a gripping plot, well-developed characters, and a fast-paced gripping read. Another winner!

This is my review of The Girlfriend.

Cole Fincham and wife Jennifer and their two children, their thirteen-year-old son, Miller and their five-year-old daughter, Sylvie have the perfect life…or do they?

The story opens with Cole and Jennifer currently hosting a Halloween bash, to show off their newly renovated house to business associates. If Cole manages to be successful with a tender deal, this will end his financial worries.

Then that night, a tragic event unfolds. Cole is killed in a car accident. Jennifer and her kids are devastated!

Soon after, a woman comes knocking at their door with an infant in her arms. She tells Jennifer that her name is Sara and that she is Cole’s girlfriend, that the baby in her arms is his son, Rory, and that she owns their family home and all their assets.

Sara, tells Jennifer that she doesn’t want to throw them out on the street, but says she and Rory will be moving into the house to allow her baby to grow up with brothers and sisters. With no family, no money and no home, Jennifer had no choice but to accept her offer.

But Jennifer is determined to find out the truth of the cause of her husband’s death, and find out what Sara role has been in all this. What exactly does Sara want from Jennifer?

This was a well-written, fast-paced psychological thriller with lots of twists and turns to satisfy the reader. Very enjoyable read!

Many thanks to the author, Bookouture and Netgalley for my digital copy.

What would you do if you found out your husband of 15 years, the father of your two children, lived a double life? This is exactly what happened to Jennifer the day after her beloved husband Cole died in a car accident. The day after police informed Jennifer that Cole had died, a beautiful young woman shows up on her doorstep claiming to be Cole’s long time girlfriend. Sara, THE GIRLFRIEND, also drops another bombshell and claims that Cole was the father of her baby son. What an absolute nightmare! Can you believe it gets worse? Trust me it does! Cole’s death suddenly turns into a homicide investigation and Jennifer is soon to be penniless and homeless because Sara now owns all of Cole’s properties and possessions. I couldn’t imagine!!

In true K.L. Slater form, The Girlfriend is riveting. It’s fast paced, full of drama and plenty of twists. The tension between Sara and Jennifer was so palpable at some points I couldn’t handle it. I was stressed out 😅! I eagerly read each page wanting to find out how it all ends. I was surprised. I didn’t see the ending coming at all.

K.L. Slater has done it again. I absolutely loved The Girlfriend I think it might be my favourite K.L. Slater book so far.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for my arc of The Girlfriend in exchange for my honest review.

Jennifer's husband was killed tragically in a car accident. She then discovers that her husband has a mistress, Sara, and a baby, and Sara now owns their home and wants to move in with Jennifer and her kids.

I don't know, this was very repetitive and I didn't quite understand how Jennifer just accepted everything so easily.... This was all pretty unbelievable! There was a twist I suppose, but I just felt this was an average read for me. If you're newer to thrillers and don't need insane plot twists and tension, you may enjoy this one.

2.5 stars

K.L. Slater never seems to miss the mark for me with her thrillers. This was my 5th book read by her and I really enjoyed this one. It was a quick read which was great because I didn't want to stop reading. This really kept me on the edge of my seat from the get-go and never let up in drama. There were so many revelations and twists in this that my head was starting to spin...in a good way! There was a full cast of characters, but they are introduced slowly which made it easy to keep each of their parts in the story straight. I think this definitely better read as an ebook or physical copy though due to the number of characters, twists, and storylines to keep track of. The characters in this were all so fun to follow and Sara was especially wicked and interesting. Another character I really ended up liking was Miller, who really took me by surprise in the end with his bravery and loyalty. This was really nicely wrapped up and I thought the ending was so fitting and explained very well. I can't wait to read more from K.L. Slater. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I wanted to love this book so so much. I read the description, and heard all the hype about it, going into the story feeling prepared for the murder mystery/psychological thriller novel of the century. It fell flat of that for me, and I really wish it didn’t.

I started the book thoroughly confused, the context clues were missing, there were characters and scenarios and memories I had no prior knowledge of and this left me at a loss. I powered through the first few confusing chapters, in hopes it would all make sense but it seemed I had more questions the further I read through. It felt like the author tried so hard on the mystery aspect of the book, that they forgot to incorporate any answers or context.

I got to the big shocking point and that confused me more. It seemed false, forced even. The interactions between the characters were very obviously manufactured (more do than it being a fictional novel), they didn’t flow and by the end of the book, the conclusion didn’t scratch the itch I’d been dying to resolve.

I felt barely any attachment to the characters throughout, and what made this book salvageable from the DNF pile was the children in the book. They were a shining light through all of the confusion, and the main reason I kept reading. The confusion and angst they felt was relatable, they acted how I’d expect them to, and made me keep reading.

I really did want to love this book, I’m gutted that it didn’t scratch that itch for me. I’m glad I read it, but it won’t make it to my reread pile any time soon.

This is a good psychological trigger with a little family drama thrown in. Shortly after she receives the news that her husband had passed away in a car accident, a woman shows up at her door with a baby . This had a slightly unbelievable story line with the two of them moving in together. Thank you to net galley and the publisher for an ARC of this book

Thank you NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.

How would you feel if upon the accidental death of your husband, some strange woman, with an infant shows up at your door describing her .life and relationship with your husband? Would it complicate things if she told you the child was his?

Things take an interesting turn when this supposed ‘girlfriend’ claims that your house is hers and that she bankrolled the upgrades and decorating of the newly renovated home. Maybe you would begin to question the relationship you had with your husband and his loyalty to you and your own children.

Well, things are not always as they seem. There are several plot twists that take things in an interesting direction. The characters are intriguing and the story is fresh. This is a satisfying read. Pick it up and get into it.

You're husband is killed in a car accident and then a strange woman and her baby show up, saying the child is your husbands and so is your house, you feel your world fall apart.. When you do whatever you have to for your 2 children and agree to let this woman move in but something isn't right.
This book is full of suspense and secrets, that when exposed will surprise readers. I enjoyed the fast paced action in this story and I definitely will be watching closely for this authors new book.

This book sounded like it was going to be great end I had high hopes. To me it felt flat and predictable and the MC wasn’t likable at all.
Although there were a few “twists” (if you want to call them that) it just never got off the ground for me.

Thanks to netgalley for the ARC.

I have to say, I think this book hyped itself a little bit too much in it's synopsis. I absolutely loved Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train so I was ready for a real psychological thriller.  The Girlfriend took a really, really long time to get anywhere I'd even remotely describe as "thrilling".  It also probably needed several dozen trigger warnings...

The story begins with Jennifer and her family preparing for a big Halloween party to debut their new house that has just been renovated.  Jennifer's husband, Cole, stumbles out of the house and takes off without telling anyone, though his son Miller sees him go and tells his mother he thinks his Dad is drunk and took off with the car.  No one seems to think anything of this despite the fact that he had previously lost his license for a year and they continue on with getting things ready for this party.

Shortly after, Jennifer is visited by some police officers who inform her that her husband has been in a car accident and did not survive.  Shortly after that, a woman shows up on her doorstep with a baby and says that she is Cole's girlfriend and she also is the mother to his son.  After some investigating, Jennifer finds out that Cole was bailed out of near bankruptcy by Sara and her trust fund and now Jennifer has nothing - the home belongs to Sara and so does all her money.

The two decide that Sara and her son will move in with Jennifer and her son and daughter which I think everyone else in the book and the world didn't think was a good idea... and all sorts of chaos ensues.

The rest of the book is all sorts of twists and turns as Jennifer tries to find out what she didn't know about Cole, what her son did know and kept from her and what other secrets Sara is hiding.  The police then let the women know that it wasn't the accident that killed Cole but rather he got struck in the head before his death and that caused the accident.  Now on top of everything else, they want to figure out who it was that actually killed Cole...

While I have to say I didn't see some of the twists coming, this book just wasn't it for me.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

The Girlfriend is an intense tale of deceit, secrets, and family loyalty. Entertaining and enticing, this offers escapism for readers. I love books by this author; the plot twists are always unpredictable, and as it all unfolds, I often find myself kicking myself that I hadn't seen the little clues weaved within the story. The writing style draws readers in, losing hours between the pages without noticing. This held me captively until the shocking conclusion was revealed....as per my expectations. The Girlfriend does not disappoint.

It's hard not to add spoilers so I will leave my recommendation here. If you like psychological thrillers that make you doubt everything that has come before within the storyline, or if you want to play detective as you read, here is a book for you

The only reason this isn't a five-star read is that I have enjoyed other reads by this author slightly more. However, this is only my personal preference.

There are scenes that some readers may find upsetting, so I advise taking note of any trigger warnings.

I love K.L Slater books and when reading the plot I just had to read it. It isn't one of her best but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. It was more of a family drama with some twists and turns, it is a little slow to start with but it quickly starts upping the pace. I will definitely be reading the next book that comes out!

2 things I wanted to get done today - finish this book and take down our tree. Finishing The Girlfriend took priority!

This was a fast paced domestic thriller and I thought I had it all figured out - but I didn’t. There was one plot that had me genuinely shocked! I will be checking out K.L. Slater’s backlist after this one.

3.5-3.75 stars

The plot of this book pulled me in right away, and there were some interesting twists; ultimately, though, it was a pretty typical domestic thriller with a lot of the expected tropes, patterns, and reveals. I enjoyed the changing perspectives and did find that, generally, they helped to build suspense throughout the story. I wanted something I could enjoy without having to put too much heavy thought into it, and this entertaining read did provide what I hoped it would. I’m sure I’ll be checking out other books from this writer in the future.

I usually love this author but this one wasn't a win for me.

I loved a good psychological thriller, but there was nothing thrilling about this book. This was more of a family drama, with a little crime thrown in there. The writing was good, as it always is with this author but I felt like i has to suspend my beliefs for this book to work for me.

Also the MC was terrible, you are being pushed out of your house and you didn't contact a lawyer? Find a job, start making money to support your children? Just doesn't seem believable to me.

Jennifer knows the news is bad when two policemen are at the door. And indeed, her husband has been killed in a one car crash. As if this isn't bad enough, a woman shows up at her door with the news that she was her husband's mistress and had his baby son. And by the way, she owns the house Jennifer and her children are living in, and the husband's business.

Thus Jennifer enters an unconventional relationship with the girlfriend, where they both live in the house with their children. But as time passes, Jennifer begins to wonder, could the girlfriend have had a role in her husband's death?

I found this a fast paced and interesting read. I would rate it 3.5 stars, but I'll give a 4 as it really held my interest.
