Stop everything, don’t read the synopsis, just trust me on this one. Go get The Girlfriend by K.L. Slater right now. This author is so consistent in her excellent writing that you don’t even need to know what you’re getting into. There are several authors who write books that are always good and K. L. Slater is one of them.

But if you need to know, here is the synopsis:

My husband’s dead. She’s at my door. She owns my home…

The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her buttery blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms.

As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts.

She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I know this will be hard to hear. But I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.’

My world implodes. And then she tells me that she owns our home – and that she’s not going anywhere…

An utterly gripping psychological thriller from the number one bestselling author of The Marriage. If you like Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train and Lisa Jewell then you will be hooked by The Girlfriend.

You cannot go wrong with any books by this author! The Girlfriend comes out on October 27!

Jennifer’s husband, Cole has died in a car accident. While Jennifer is dealing with the loss, a beautiful woman shows up at her door carrying a baby. She claims that she was Cole’s girlfriend, the baby is his, and she owns the house. Jennifer and her children’s lives have totally altered. The girlfriend wants to move in with them. Jennifer allows it or she would be out on the street.

There are so many twists and turns. An ending that I wasn’t expecting.
The Girlfriend by K.L. Slater is a totally gripping psychological thriller from page one to the last.

Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and K.L.Slater for the ARC. AMAZING!!

Book Title: The Girlfriend
Author: K. L. Slater
Publisher: Bookouture
Genre: Mystery/ Psychological Thriller
Pub Date: October 27, 2022
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐+ Stars!

I am a K.L. Slater fan; I have read only three novels "The Marriage" ,"The Widow", and "The Apartment". All were great. One earned 4+stars while the other two earned 5 stars from stingy star me!

This story starts with Jennifer Fincham grieving over the sudden death of her husband Cole.
Sara a young attractive blonde arrives at the door. She is carrying a baby and claims she is Cole's girlfriend and the baby is his. She also states Cole had borrowed money from her and that this home, car etc. are actually hers.
Yikes!

She says she wants their son Rory to grow up with his siblings -Miller 13 and 5 year old Sylvie – (Cole & Jennifer’s two children) - she then moves in and takes over!

This story is a major page turner.
Near the end I was getting dizzy from all the twists and turns!!

I am a big psychological thriller fan and K. L. Slater (aka Kim) did not disappoint.

I always enjoy reading the author’s Note and/or Acknowledgment. In – “A Letter from K. L. Slater”, we reads learn that sometime ideas are collaboration between herself and her agent Camilla, and her editor Lydia. She herself has always been fascinated when reading a true-life situation such as when the parents in a loving relationship begin to live separate lives and actually have another family - yet are able to hide the situation from the other. What would you do in Jennifer Fincham’s shoes?

One more inside scoop ~ the story setting is Nottinghamshire where Kim Slater was born but she has taken the liberty to change some street names!

Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for this early eGalley.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for October 27, 2022

I love this author because she writes the most deranged and odd stuff, but it is also somehow relatable. That takes serious talent.
There is no way I'd move my dead husband's mistress into my house before he was even cold in the ground. I'd go prolonged camping if I needed to.

Thanks for the ARC. I very much enjoyed this, even if it did give me some serious anxiety.

Jennifer and Cole have the perfect life – a gorgeous and newly renovated home, two darling children, and a loving marriage – until the day the police show up on the doorstep with the devastating news that Cole was in a horrible car accident and didn’t survive. Jennifer’s life couldn’t possibly get worse until it does –a gorgeous young woman named Sara rings the doorbell, declaring that she was Cole’s girlfriend and that the baby on her hip is Cole’s son.

Maybe you think the secret girlfriend of the dead husband has been done before, but it’s never been done the way K.L. Slater has done it! Because it turns out Jennifer’s idyllic life was a lie, and her home and everything else she has is legally owned by Sara. Worse yet, Sara is moving in and there’s really nothing Jennifer can do except go along with it unless she wants her children to be homeless.

K.L. Slater is an absolute queen of twisty suspense, and “The Girlfriend” is a prime example of why! This domestic noir is brilliantly executed – a totally fresh perspective on a favorite thriller trope, clever and unexpected plot twists, and expertly crafted characters. Sara is delightfully sinister; I love how horrible she is and the evil way she manipulates people, especially Jennifer’s children. Slater skillfully builds the tension until you could cut it with a knife – I could not put this book down even though it was bedtime, I had to find out it would all end! I was tired the next day but I don’t regret a thing!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me an advance copy of this book.

Jennifer's husband is dead and now a young beautiful woman is knocking on her door with a baby boy in her arms saying she's his girlfriend and it's his baby, she also owns the house Jennifer calls home and she intends to move in.

I liked this story but I wanted a little more. I feel like it was a bit rushed. So much more sinister-ness could have happened but I felt like it got cut short.

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
* Psychological Thriller at its best!
Kim is the number one bestselling author of sixteen psychological crime thrillers. She has sold over two million copies of her books worldwide. She has also written four Carnegie-nominated Young Adult novels as Kim Slater for Macmillan Children’s Books. Kim has an MA in Creative Writing and lives with her husband in a small Nottinghamshire village.
I have always been fascinated with reading true-life accounts of women who discover their partner is not who they think he is. She is completely unaware. This one just puts it over the top!~
" My husband’s dead. She’s at my door. She owns my home…"
A nightmare scenario that I truly enjoyed reading. Fury! Shock! Grief! It has it all.
I recommend this book.

Beware ‘The Girlfriend’
Especially if you are a wife who has recently lost her hubby and she turns up at your door, bringing with her the son she says is his
Oh and then telling you she owns your house, cars and everything….right down to your last penny 🙃
Superbly intriguing psychological thriller that puts wife and family against girlfriend but as with all this authors books there is way more to it than that…not just a few twists and turns but a whole book full of them makes this a well told and exciting read and takes the theme of ‘cuckoo in the nest’ to a new level
This author constantly writes great books and this the 17th I have read is just as good as the 16 read previously
Loved it

The perfect, renovated, expensive house in an upscale neighborhood. The perfect marriage and nuclear family. The perfect forgiveness of a husband and his previous affair. The perfect Halloween / birthday party thrown by the perfect husband for the perfect wife. The perfect killing of this husband leading to the “perfect l” girlfriend and new baby in tow landing on a grieving widows doorstep. What could be more perfect than that?

Well, when KL Slater writes a novel, she will perfectly blow you away. So many suspects. So much craziness abound. This novel will keep you guessing, until her perfect ending that you just won’t see coming!

Highly recommended for those who love mystery/thrillers, family drama, and psychological suspense thrills. Who did it you ask? Grab The Girlfriend and jump in the mix. You won’t be sorry you did. A perfect addition to your October thrills and chills reads, conveniently being released Oct 27, 2022. You won’t want to miss this one!

Another brilliant book from one of my favourite authors which I couldn't stop reading then I was annoyed with myself for finishing it so early.

I just love books like this that keep me on the edge of my seat and all the characters were well described, I liked them all, some more than others.

I found this to be a fast paced thriller from the very beginning and did not expect the ending to be how it was, just brilliant.

Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this great ARC which I have no hesitation in recommending.

Jennifer seems to have it all, a nice house, fancy cars, a loving husband and two children. Well, all is not as it seems. The night before Jennifer's birthday party she gets a knock at the door, her husband was in an accident and didn't survive. Devastated, as you can imagine, she gets even more to deal with. A woman named Sara knocks on her door with a baby and claims she has been with Cole for the past year. Another problem for Jennifer is that Sara claims she owns everything of Cole and Jennifer's, since she provided backing for all of Cole's loans. What will happen to Jennifer and her family?

Talk about a page turner! I couldn't imagine being in this situation at all! K.L. Slater is an expert writer! She can tell a good story that you will not want to put down. I highly recommend picking this one up, you won't be disappointed.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Wow, just wow this book is brilliant. Such a well written book and very gripping, The story revolves around Jennifer who discovers her husband had an affair when the woman and her child turn up on her doorstep. I have read and loved all KL Slater's books but this one is the best one she has written in my opinion. I highly recommend this book and can't wait for her next book. Easily 5 stars from me.

This is another fabulous domestic noir by KL Slater. I’ve loved all of this author’s books and this one certainly didn’t disappoint.
There were plenty of twists throughout and a fabulous ending.
I’d definitely recommend this book. It’s another fantastic page turner that is well written and engrossing.

This was pretty good, but I wanted a bit more from it. The situation main character Jennifer found herself in was awful, and maybe I'm a little twisted but I would have liked to have seen Sara really ruin her life. Just as things were starting to really get interesting and I felt a threat in the air, everything was resolved rather quickly and that was that. I did enjoy the book but I don't think it will be particularly memorable.

Not for me, what a bunch of misery with the main characters not being trustworthy, and every single one of them in their own way unstable. Most of them being female this annoyed me quite a bit.

And as I'm already complaining, let me suggest some diversity when it comes to skin color, sexual preferences, religion, history, cultural background, income (or lack of), and chronics.
