Perfect for fans of the runaway bestseller The Wager by David Grann, this book does a satisfying deep dive into a selection of maritime mysteries throughout history.

***** I have received and read an e - ARC from NetGalley in exchange for giving my honest feedback. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.*****

I’ve always loved the sea, so I was looking forward to this book.

It was okay. Not terrible, but not good.

It reads more like a dry textbook than the synopsis had made it out to be.

I love these sorts of books! Short true stories and mysteries, this time about the sea!

The weather has been bad outside creating the perfect setting for this book, re-engaging in stories i knew and discovering some i did not. I especially like how the book mentions the fateful Franklin Expedition as my interest in this topic has been a slow burning peak since the wreaks where found and then covid put a stop on the investigation.......

Highly recommend this book as it was easy to read and the author tells the stories in an interesting way.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. All views are my own.

Who knows? Perhaps my lifelong interest in maritime history is due to the Navy men in my family, which is why I picked up Michael and Mollie Hardwick's The World's Greatest Sea Mysteries.

Originally published in 1967, the Hardwicks cover a wide range of maritime mysteries in twenty-eight chapters. The book's emphasis is slanted to British readers, and-- due to it being over fifty years old-- it does occasionally feel dated, but it still held my interest throughout.

The precariousness of life can be seen in letters returned to senders marked "Sailed for England" or the much more dire "SHIP FOUNDERED". Readers can learn about men who had similar experiences with whales as Jonah. There are pirates, lost treasures, and men disappearing in their attempts to find the Northwest Passage. Perhaps the most unsettling to me were the floating derelict ships, but the most mystifying was the racehorse found on an uninhabited island many miles from the mainland.

If you have an interest in the sea and its centuries-worth of mysteries, you should be able to find several items of interest in this book.

I love reading about unsolved mysteries and was very hopeful for this book. However it felt all one tone and wasn’t as exciting as the potential it had. I’m glad I learned of some new-to-me mysteries but I feel it could have done with some updating to make it more intriguing. 3 stars.

This title lit up the 8-year old in me when I saw it. I remember loving those DK trivia books and collections of mysterious events. I am still a sucker for a book on sasquatches or sea monsters. The Hardwick’s collection did not disappoint. Each chapter recounts the tale and history of a vessel lost at sea, a spate of sea monster attacks, ghostly ships, and the like. The chapters are short, succinct, and leave the reader wanting to know more — and isn’t that the purpose of a mystery?

The prose is a bit dated — the Hardwicks wrote the original back in the 1967 — but there is nothing wrong with this. Indeed, that kind of syntax adds a little historicity to the collection. There is something familiar about it and nostalgic in a way. But maybe that’s just me remembering my childhood and the long, lovely hours I spent reading books like these that let my imagination fly wild.

A great collection of tales of maritime disasters. The author does a great job of weaving each story to keep your interest. A great read for the history and ship enthusiasts.

Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

A decent mix of stories. This may not be as good as other anthologies, but still may be worth a read.

Thanks very much for the free review copy for review!!

Interesting read but very repetitive. Started with the interesting stories then began to tail off in the final few chapters. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.

A series of unusual events and mysteries set at sea. Like all such books, have some stories that captured the interest and others not so much. All well researched and written, it is difficult to pick up and read beginning to end, excellent however as a coffee table book to pick up from time to time and read the chapter of your choice.
Thanks to NetGalley and Sapere Books for providing me with an Advance Reader's Copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

This is an unusual statement from me, but "this book was written 55 years ago and goes unupdated".
The authors died in 1991 and 2003, so why was the book republished. There is nothing in here that is important and the style is appalling. If you look at the Table of Contents this could have been a ledger account. Name of Ship, date of sailing, boat lost. So what.

This is a fun book for anyone interested in mysteries at sea. It’s not written in a particularly sophisticated stle and meandees a but, but is still entertaining

Interesting book about maritime mysteries, ships that disappeared, crews that disappeared. It is an older book, but since these mysteries haven't been solved, it holds up.

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!

First off, this is a book originally published in 1967. That's not a problem because so many of the mysteries, oddities and stories are older and they remain open questions; there was a missed opportunity to provide an update on the Erebus and the Terror, though.

I enjoyed this because it reminded me of the omnibus mysteries I used to read when I was younger, I enjoy the random collection of stories tied together only by no clear explanation or resolution. There used to be a lot more of these in the older shelves of my grandfather's library!

I received a copy of this from Netgalley to read and review.
