Darby Piper and Tate Porter own and run Two Girls Detective Agency (Tate inherited his half from his aunt) and they are hired by Tate's former girlfriend, Cecily, to protect her husband who has been getting death threats. They are all at a ski lodge for New Year's Eve and unfortunately Darby and Tate were unable to keep Cecily's husband from a murderous end. There was loads of suspects and a smart dog that helped in the investigation.

The story was entertaining, characters were fun, a totally enjoyable experience.

Frozen Detective is a good cozy mystery by Amanda Flower.. It is the second novel in a series but does fine as a read alone. I recommend this novel.

Frozen Detective

by Amanda Flower

I returned for a second serving of the Piper & Porter Mystery Series with the cozy mystery Frozen Detective. Darby Piper and Tate Porter are still getting used to working together as private investigators in the Finger Lakes area. Needing more work than just background checks, they accept a job from Cecily, Tate’s old classmate, from Harrington, NY. Clearly, now a sophisticated and rich businesswoman from New York City, Cecily hires the duo to find out who is sending threatening notes to her husband.

Darby and Tate find themselves working undercover at the Garden Peak Lodge, the most expensive ski resort in the area as “guests” of Cecily and her husband Dr. Madd, a dermatologist with a successful line of expensive skincare products. After a New Year’s Eve bash with a lot of uncomfortable guests, Darby spots someone lying in the snow in the early morning chill. Darby and Tate’s investigations, of course, refocus to find the murderer. There are lots of people invited to the weekend with motivation and opportunity. The spotlight bounces to various possibilities including the victim’s daughter and son. The clock is ticking as guests are eager to leave since the host, their potential gravy train, is out of the picture and a blizzard is on the way. Will Piper and Tate be able to solve the crime with the help of Tiny a lovable St. Bernard?

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Rating: 5/5

Category: Mystery

Notes: # 2 in the Piper & Porter Mystery Series but could be read as a standalone.

Publication: December 6, 2022—Hallmark

Memorable Lines:

“I’m usually easy to find around the lodge. Tiny is always at my side.” He let his hand rest on the massive dog’s head.”

There weren’t many things I was afraid of, but hurling myself down the face of a mountain on a couple of slick boards was one of them. Any bravado I’d been feeling when I first said yes to the idea had dissipated.

Instead of doing as I asked, he ran farther away from us and then stopped to look back. He barked again. “He wants us to follow him,” I said. “Sheesh, did this dog go to Lassie school or something?” Tate wanted to know.

This is the second book in the Piper and Porter Mystery series and a perfect series to get in at the beginning if you haven't tried an Amanda Flower series yet. Darby Piper runs Piper and Porter Detective Agency in Herrington, New York. When her partner Samantha died, she left her share in the agency to her nephew Tate, so he is now Darby's partner. He doesn't know much about the PI business, but has a military background. In this story, they are hired by the wife of a dermatologist and old friend of Tate's, to investigate who has been sending her husband threatening letters. They are invited to a ski resort, where he is wining and dining some acquaintances and business associates, hoping the sender will be in attendance. When Dr. Madd is found dead, shot by a crossbow, the case takes a different turn. Unfortunately there has been a major storm and they are snowed in, so no police can get there to investigate at first, so it is left to Darby and Tate.

Frozen Detective was a great addition to this series with a mystery that kept me guessing right to the end. Cece, Dr. Madd's wife seemed like a perfect suspect to me, but as the story unfolded it seemed that several people had motives to kill Dr. Madd. With a storm causing them to be snowed in, the power going out and a lot of disgruntled people, I was dizzy trying to guess who might be the culprit. This mystery was a bit more complex than some of the other books I have read, but that made it all the more interesting. There was a great showdown with a snowmobile race leading us to the final reveal. I will say that I thought the culprit's motive was a bit weak, and that brought my 5 star review down a notch. I will continue to read the Piper and Porter mysteries as I am enjoying the mysteries and the relationship building between Darby and Tate. I did a read/listen with the audiobook narrated by Laura Faye Smith. She also narrated the first book in this series and I have been pleased with her performance. She had good expression, voices and tone. I recommend Frozen Detective in either format, whichever you prefer.

Darby and Tate are pleased with how things are going at their detective agency. Their latest job is going undercover as a couple at a luxury ski villa. A wealthy doctor is auditioning people for a business proposition, and his wife suspects one of the guests is there to murder her husband. The mystery was strong and kept me guessing until the end. I do wish Darby was a smarter investigator. Overall it was an enjoyable read, and I look forward to more in this series.

📖📖📖📖

Darby and Tate, owners of the Piper and Porter Detective Agency, get a new case with a high school friend of Tate's. Cecily, wife of a renowned dermatologist and skincare company, hires them to find someone who is threatening her husband. Darby and Tate pose as a couple for a posh New Year's weekend at Cecilys family inn on a nearby mountain. They have plenty of suspects to investigate and when the husband is killed, things really get into high gear.

In this second of the Piper and Porter Mysteries, I enjoy the banter between Darby and Tate as they work the case and interact. The setting is lovely with lots of snow and the inn itself sounds gorgeous. This is a fun mystery to unravel with some twists and turns to get there. Fun read and I would recommend it!

I’m completely addicted to this new series by Amanda Flowers. I recently read the first and quickly followed up with “Frozen Detective”. I enjoyed what are becoming increasingly complex characters layered with a lot of fun as well. I am glad I read the first for more background into how this sleuthing partnership started and to get more basis for their relationship. I missed some of the ancillary characters from the first one, but when you’re trapped on a mountain, I get that you can’t bring everyone along! Loved this and can’t wait for this next.

This is the second book in the Piper and Porter mystery series. I found it absolutely delightful. It is set at a ski resort in Upper New York. Amanda Flower has created another great set of sleuths. This one is a bit different from the typical cozy as the detectives here are private investigators and help the police. Darby Piper has years of experience and Tate Porter is her new partner.

I loved the atmosphere and the setting. I really felt like I was in Upper New York in the dead of winter. The action is set around New Year’s Eve. There were lots of suspects. I gave this mystery 4.5 stars. I definitely recommend this one. Thank you to NetGalley and Hallmark publishing for the free Advanced Reader’s Copy.

Thank you NetGalley for my arc. Another great detective read. I have read most of the books from Hallmark Publishing and this is my second by Amanda Flower and let me tell you neither have let me down. I really enjoy cozy mysteries and this one didn't disappoint. If you want a book that will pull you in from beginning to end this is a book for you

I really enjoyed this book, had a mystery, a murder, some unlikable characters and many secrets before the murder is solved. I liked the detectives - they had a little tension between, them with a touch jealousy. Due to the fact that some of the characters were so well cast, I found the ending not what I expected. But that is what mysteries are about - the surprise at the end. Thanks you NetGalley and the publishers for the DRC

Frozen Detective is the second book in the Piper and Porter series by Amanda Flower. I have read other series by this author, but this was the first time diving into this world. I didn't feel lost though, jumping into the series at book two, it can be read as a stand alone.
Darby and Tate are hired by a socialite to find out who is sending threatening letters to her husband. The couple is throwing a new years eve party weekend for their skincare company at a remote ski resort. Before the the new year has barely begun, there is a murder and the resort goes on lock down until the police and our to sleuths can figure out who may be a suspect. It has some vibes of "And then there were none" by Agatha Christie as all the players are stuck in the same place together. I love these kind of mysteries!
There are many interesting side characters/suspects, including an ex-wife, the hotel staff, a bitter half brother and a troubled hollywood it girl. There is also a touch of romance to keep things cozy. Very likable characters and an enjoyable read!

I enjoyed this one in the Piper and Porter series. When the chance for a free weekend at an exclusive ski resort, they take the offer to help find the writer of the anonymous threats. These characters are still evolving but they are fun to 'watch' as they interact with either other. It's well-written and a quick read. Looking forward to the next one in the series.

This was the second book in the Piper and Porter series by Amanda Flower. This can be read as a stand alone as I missed the first one in the series. Darby and Tate must pretend to be a couple while trying to figure out who was sending nasty letters to Dr Madd. Next thing we know there is a murder to solve in this winter wonderland. Will they figure it out in time or become victims themselves? These are a couple of quirky detectives you will really like. Also fall in love with the giant slobbering Tiny. Amanda Flower knows how to write a good cozy which includes may others as well.

Thank you to Hallmark and Netgalley for the ARC. A CEO is murdered on New Year’s while everyone is holed up together in a ski lodge for his big party. What a fun premise! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and had no trouble getting into the story. Darby Piper is a very savvy detective and a great choice for the narrator. I loved how, just like any good Hallmark mystery, the story was fun and lighthearted while also incorporating an page turning mystery. Not to mention the great chemistry between Darby and Tate. Frozen Detective is a fast, cozy read for the winter.
