Yesterday’s Tides is my first book by this author and I wasn’t disappointed. Oh my stars.

The basic premise is two generations of women living on the distant and isolated Ocracoke Island off the coast of North Carolina. The first in 1914 and the second in 1942. As this is a dual time novel, you fully understand the two stories will intertwine and these do, beautifully.

In the 1914 thread we meet Louisa Adair, who ekes out a living helping out at her family’s inn with with her widowed mom and several other women. The world is on the brink of war but Louisa’s life isn’t changing much until two new guests arrive for summer, half British Remington Culbreth and his boorish cousin. Rem delights in avoiding all his cousin’s plans and spends the summer falling deeply in love with a woman his family would never accept.

Fast forward to 1942 and while German U-boats stalk the waters of the North Atlantic, Evie Farrow helps run the family inn, until her orderly life is upended by a badly injured British intelligence officer, hunting a Germany spy. The two must work together and call on some of Evie’s surprising skills if they’re going to track him down before there’s bloodshed.

Where to start. For me, the book began slowly, because the author took time and care to set up the two plots. I spent a while trying to figure out exactly how the two fit. Then boom. All of a sudden, I couldn’t stop thinking about the characters. I wondered how Rem was doing, while making coffee, and if Louisa was okay, despite everything (not telling what I mean by ‘everything’). Over breakfast I had to pick my book up to see if Evie and Sterling had caught the rogue officer. So be warned. You will struggle to put this down.

As an avid reader who reads quickly, I’m often not as moved by some stories as I should be. This one brought me to tears for three minutes. I cannot recommend Yesterday’s Tides highly enough. If you enjoy love stories or survivor stories or war stories, the is a MUST READ.

I received a copy from the publisher via Netgalley. The gushing opinions are all my own.

I cannot say enough about the talents of Roseanna M. White. Split between World War I and World War II, she tells the story of one little North Carolina inn’s residents that spans generations and continents. Yesterday’s Tides is filled with romance, intrigue, and faith and is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time!

Roseanna's books never fail to please. I love the depth of story and the beautiful settings. I have to admit that this book took a while to hook me, but once it did, I certainly did not want to set it aside. I was deep in the story when my lunch ended and I had to go back to work...I was almost late! I loved visiting with characters from former books and realized that I had not yet read the Culper Ring trilogy. Although there are references to former books Yesterday's Tides can be read as a stand alone. so grab a glass of tea and settle in for a fabulous story.

I was given a copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations. All thoughts are my own.

I've never visited the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but Roseanna White has made them come alive here in her first dual timeline novel. Be ready to immerse yourself in both WWI and WWII and their effects on a small island on the American coastline.

When Evie Farrows finds a man washed ashore, she knows immediately that he's more than he seems. Who is he and why was he on a boat near their shore?

Louisa Adair's beauty has always drawn attention, but Remington Culbreth seems to be captivated by her spirit as well as her appearance. As friendship grows, are they willing to break social norms and challenge centuries of tradition to be together?

This book captured my attention right away. I enjoyed all four point of view characters and felt invested in them. The setting is beautiful and makes me want to visit Ocracoke and the rest of the Outer Banks. Because there were overlying people and places in both timelines, it did get a little confusing at times, and I felt some plot points got a little convoluted, as it would have helped me as a reader to have things cleared up earlier. I loved the cameo appearances by characters from some of White's other series, and always smiled when they were on the page.

I would recommend this book for fans of romantic split time historical fiction. Be ready to cheer for Evie, Sterling, Louisa, and Remington!

What a great book! I have loved all of Roseanna M. White's books. Yesterday's Tides doesn't disappoint. It's a dual timeline that takes place on Ocracoke Island during 1942 (WWII) and 1914 (the Great War).

In 1942, Evie Farrow discovers a man washed ashore after a German U-boat sinks the ship he was traveling on. The seriously injured Sterling Bertrand is a special agent who is hunting for a spy. It takes weeks for him to recover and during that time they make their own discoveries. In 1914, Englishman Remington Culbreth arrives to stay at the inn for the summer. He falls in love with Louisa Adair the innkeeper's daughter but when war threatens, they will have choices to make. Each story involves intrigue, danger, secrets and romance.

It's a wonderful story and I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend it to anyone who loves historical books. I received this book from the author and Bethany House Publishers and all opinions are my own.

Finally, finally made time to just sit down and immerse myself in this story….so glad I did!
Another amazing story from Roseanna White.
This one is a bit different from others of hers in that....well, first, it's a standalone novel, and also, it is a dual timeline.
This story is about Evie in 1942, and Louisa in 1914.
I loved both time lines, both heroines, both settings.

I really enjoyed the mystery that was interwoven in both timelines, and I loved seeing how it all pulled together in the end.
The characters were just, well, really well-written. They came to life for me, and were oh-so-relatable.
The family drama, the romance, the war and intrigue...well, it all combines to be an unforgettable novel, and I highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys a good historical fiction novel.

Grab a box of tissues and a copy of Yesterday’s Tides as soon as possible because Roseanna M. White has outdone herself with her latest release! Readers will be captivated by this exquisite dual-time tale of espionage, love, war, family, race, and history!

In two world wars, intelligence and counterintelligence, prejudice, and self-sacrifice collide across two generations.

1942 — Evie Farrow is used to life on Ocracoke Island, where every day is the same — until German U-boats haunting their waters begin to wreak havoc, and special agent Sterling Bertrand washes ashore at Evie’s inn.

After being burned in a torpedo explosion, Sterling’s injuries keep him inn-bound for weeks, making him even more anxious about the SS officer he’s been tracking and increasingly intrigued by Evie, who seems to be hiding secrets of her own. Will he finally catch the man he’s spent years chasing? And what of this mysterious island girl? Can Evie be trusted to help him complete his mission?

“It was hard to be suspicious of someone whose touch was so careful and whose voice was so bright and who had promised not only to help but to keep his secrets.” ~ Roseanna M. White

1914 — Englishman Remington Culbreth arrives at the Ocracoke Inn for the summer, but he doesn’t count on falling in love with Louisa Adair, the innkeeper’s daughter. However, when war breaks out in Europe, their blossoming relationship is put in jeopardy.

Working in her family’s inn seems to be Louisa’s destiny, or it was until she meets Rem and can’t help dreaming of a bigger future. Will their love survive the battles ahead, or will the war tear them apart?

“Sometimes I wonder how different it would all be if we could be who we are. If freedom really meant we were free—to choose, to discover, to explore.” ~ Roseanna M. White

As the ripple of the Great War rock Evie and Sterling’s lives in World War II, it seems yesterday’s tides may sweep them all into danger again today.

Oh my goodness, my heart is FULL, and my eyes are wet with tears!! Yesterday’s Tides is the most beautiful, moving, and artistically written Historical Fiction novel I’ve had the privilege to read! Evie, Sterling, Louisa, and Rem’s storylines came together perfectly! I experienced every emotion, felt like I was walking alongside them, and became wholeheartedly invested in their lives! During their journeys, the brightest star was their faith which shone brightly throughout the inked pages. No one can separate what God has brought together, and we clearly see this message woven into the plot as each couple works to fulfill the calling on their lives!

“When it feels like the wind and the water are stealing those prayers, we can anchor them to something in our thoughts, as a reminder that no one and nothing can really snatch them away.” ~ Roseanna M. White

Rich in prayer, God’s glory, and pure love that will weaken your knees, Yesterday’s Tides is one of Roseanna M. White’s best novels! I particularly loved how she incorporated her characters from previous books into the narrative, though not in a way that would confuse new readers. I am also in awe of what Roseanna did in this novel, especially after learning that she originally wrote it twenty years ago in a completely different era and genre! WOW! This is true artistry!

“Every islander knows—there’s always going to be another hurricane. Another storm. Everything buried will surface again, and everything you thought would last forever will come down eventually. But you rebuild. You dredge. You keep moving, keep adding new. That’s how we go on living.” ~ Roseanna M. White

Whether you’re a fan of Roseanna M. White’s books or new to her work, if you enjoy Historical Fiction, romance, and faith-based stories, Yesterday’s Tides is a MUST-READ!

This book was so heart wrenching good, that I felt like my emotions were on a roller coaster. The story is about two different timelines, one taking place in the years around the World War One, and the other World War two. The main location is Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. Though the timelines take us on a journey to many important places, especially concerning the wars. The story is very intricate, and the author did such a good job of putting all the pieces together. In fact, if you have read other author White's stories and her series, you the reader are in for a real treat. I will not say more than that, but I was amazed at her detail. If you have not, you will still enjoy this story immensely.

When we switched the timelines, you knew which one you were in by the titling of Yesterday or Today. This story is chock full of family, friends, romance, and political intrigue. Not only that but the first timeline seamlessly runs into the other with a few twists and turns that took me by surprise. So much so I had to read a couple of parts over again just to let the dynamics sink in.

The characters, I loved them. Both eras. There was a bit of mystery that only deepened the story more. This is also the second book I have read this year that deals with some islands in North Carolina and the outer banks that played an important role during World War Two. The historical facts and the atmosphere of impending war or war brought this story to life. And the romantic journey of the couples, priceless, though I was worried about them at times.

I do believe this is now my favorite author White book.

Yesterday's Tides by Roseanna M. White is a wonderful inspirational historical romance with dual timelines that keep you on the edge of your seat looking forward to what will come next.
When special agent Sterling Bertrand washes ashore near Evie's Inn in 1942, her life will no longer be the same because they team up to track down a German agent. In doing so what they find out from the past could put all their lives in danger.
Remington Culbreth has the summer of 1914 to enjoy himself at Ocracoke Inn while life and responsibilities continue in the rest of world, that he will soon have to return to. However he never imagined that he would fall in love with Louisa Adair, the innkeeper's daughter. Now with the war starting in Europe their relationship is in jeopardy and their love may not survive.
I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

I absolutely adored this book! The dual timeline is something new for me from Roseanna M. White, and I loved it. There wasn't a moment where I wasn't invested in both. I loved all the characters, and you cannot believe how EXTREMELY pleased I was when I realized that all of my favorite characters got a cameo in the book. I was so sad when I had to leave the WW1 friends, but Margot and Barclay and Brooke and Camden all showed up and my heart was happy. At one point, I was squealing out loud, and I really hope nobody heard me. Evie and Louisa and Rem and Sterling were so perfect. Even thinking about Aunt L and her ending right now is making me tear up again. The grandma's were perfect. I could honestly read a sequel picking right up with Evie and Sterling right this second. I loved that there was sign language incorporated. The espionage was thrilling. The setting was beautiful. I loved the relationship between Evie and the Coast Guards. The whole way this book was sewn together was to die for. I highly recommend to lovers of historical fiction or lovers of Roseanna's books.

(Also want to mention that Edith is a despicable human and I extremely much do not love her.)

I love reading a little different setting for Roseanna's books! I have enjoyed all of the ones set in WWI, but it's fun when an author branches out. This one is well written, with wonderful characters. I also appreciate how the story prods (gently) the reader to think.

Where can I even begin with this book? It’s got everything a great story needs: lost love, family drama, spies and intrigue, a beautiful setting, found family, and faith elements. And it’s got a dual timeline, with one story set during the Great War and one during World War Two. Though I have to say, my favorite parts were probably when character’s from Roseanna’s other books made appearances. It was like seeing old friends again. I think I’ve said this several times, but this may truly be my favorite work of hers. I really couldn’t put it down! I enjoyed her writing style, as always (clear and not repetitive, yet full of delicious details). The characters were complex and easy to root for (except the ones who weren’t supposed to be); I thought I would like Evie’s storyline the best, but I think Louisa’s is my favorite. She had to make some difficult choices and she did so and came out the other side okay. And Rem, he is a sweet hero. And of course I loved both romances, though I wondered how quickly Evie’s would actually come about. It did feel like the main focus was on Louisa’s story, and more time devoted to her plot line, however I guess if not for hers then Evie’s would not exist. I also appreciated the way we found out, right along with Sterling (who is also a great hero) where some of the ladies had ended up in the 1940’s. I could go on! This is a fantastic book and you should most definitely read it!

They say never judge a book by its cover, but this one is beautiful on the inside too. There’s history, romance, mystery, but at its core it’s a heart-wrenching family drama told by the generations affected in WWI and WWII.

Out of the four historical fiction books I read this month, this one is at the top. So many WWI & WWII books are set overseas, and I appreciated that Rosanna shed light on the hardships experienced stateside during both periods.

This dual timeline novel follows two women during the First World War (in 1912) and the Second World War (in 1942). I enjoyed following both stories, but especially the one during the year 1942.

Ignoring the very large number of characters, so large that I had to create a list of them to keep track, the novel flows smoothly. As you read more of the stories, you get familiar with all the characters. It's more a plot driven novel, but you do get to see the characters' development throughout. The mystery aspect of the novel, not knowing for sure whom to trust, the intrigue with the war spies and war intelligence made me turn the pages faster.

Besides the romantic plot line, where we learn about Evie Farrow's and Louisa Adair's love stories, the novel deals with themes of racism, class divisions, secrets kept hidden over multiple generations, and true friendship. The best thing was reading to see how the two story lines converge and how the characters connect with one another. It was a wonderful reading experience. I admit starting this hoping for an easy read during a weekend, but there is substance to the story, and a couple of weeks later, I still think about it, and the characters, sometimes.

For fans of historical novels, especially set during either of the two World Wars, this is a good choice of reading material. In the note at the end of the novel, the author does mention how these characters are in fact characters from her previous works. I hadn’t read anything by her before, but I didn't feel like there was a lack of depth to the way the characters were constructed. However, those familiar with her other novels will probably get an extra level of enjoyment recognizing other characters.

Yesterday's Tides was absolutely amazing! I was quickly drawn into the story and loved how it was written. The time-slip was great; I was intrigued by how the stories intertwined and trying to figure that out was a treat.

The romance was wonderful in BOTH timelines. I was nervous at times with how everything would turn out, which made the book difficult to put down.

One thing I especially loved was how this story included characters from White's previous books AND she included in the author's note all the little connections. So fun!

All in all, Yesterday's Tides was an amazing read that I highly recommend. It's definitely going on my favorites' shelf. :)

I really enjoyed this book by Roseanna White. I have always been a fan of her books and this book did not disappoint. I loved how in this book we got to see characters from past series and saw how they interacted with the main characters. I liked how Remington was a minor character in a previous series and now he got his story. I loved how this story jumped between WWI and WWII. I thought it was interesting to see how the past influenced the present. I liked how the story was told and the surprises that were in the story. I thought this was a good story and gave a good glimpse into how people can sometimes not be what we expect from outside appearances. I would highly recommend this book.

In 1914 Remington Culbreath meets Louisa Adair when he visits Ocracoke for the summer with his cousin. Remington is spending one last summer of freedom before he has to settle down to the career his parents have chosen for him that is deemed suitable for the family name. Louisa’s best friend is in Paris, and she dreams of someday traveling as well and going to college, which would be a big step for an innkeeper’s daughter. Rem and Louisa don’t plan to fall in love that summer, but they do. They come from two very different worlds, though, and when war breaks out Rem is called back to England to serve his country.
In 1942 Evie is delivering breakfast treats to the men at the Coast Guard station on Ocracoke who are on high alert for U boats and U boat victims when she stumbles across an unconscious man on the beach with horrible burns. He wakes up enough to tell her his name is Sterling Bertram but not much else. He obviously came from the British ship that was just torpedoed, but he is not in uniform. She decides to secretly care for him at the inn with Grandma See and Uncle Garrett until she can find out more about him, and in the meantime she’ll wire Davie to see if he can confirm his status as a British operative.
As Rem and Louisa’s possibly doomed love story and Evie and Sterling’s hunt for a German spy on Ocracoke unfold, ties between the two timelines and the mystery of why a spy would come to Ocracoke are revealed.

This starts off a little slow, but once I started figuring out that there are ties between the people in the two timelines, I was turning the pages faster to figure out how those ties were possible. Rem and Louisa’s story seems doomed from the start. It is stated that Louisa has slightly darker skin though her mother is blonde, but her mother refuses to tell her anything about her father, just that he was a good man and is dead. The woman Louisa has always called Grann is a former slave, but Louisa doesn’t know if she’s really her father’s mother, or just an adopted grandmother. As her story unfolds readers really get to ponder what it must have been like for those of mixed race in the South in the years not too long after the Civil War and the lengths their families went to to try and give them a better life. Figuring out if or how Rem and Louisa could end up with a future was what kept me turning pages, and there are little clues dropped in the WWII timeline with increasing details as you get closer to the end of the book and the grand reveal in the WWI timeline. It was a tantalizingly written time slip plot line with just the right amount of reveals to relieve some tension while enough questions left to keep you turning pages as fast as possible to see how in the world things worked out to get to where they are in WWII. I also really liked Evie and Sterling and how they both use their training in undercover ops to puzzle each other and the German spy’s location out. What made this an extra fun novel was that White wove in characters from all her other series. Rem eventually works in room 40 with Barclay and Margot, and their “family” adopts him. It was quite fun for me to spend more time with them. That’s the only other series of White’s I’ve read in its entirety thus far so they were the ones I recognized the most. The author lists in the back of the book all the other characters from other series who appear. So this will be an extra fun read for fans of the authors other series as well as a good pick for fans of WWI and WWII historical romance thrillers.

Notes on content: No language issues. No sex scenes or anything beyond a kiss on page. Part of the WWI plotline involves a woman who was given the impossible choice of having her loved ones killed or becoming a Nazi officer’s mistress. There is a ship sunk by torpedoes in the WWII plotline with deaths mentioned but not described and a survivor with burns (only minimally described). There’s a WWI battle scene in which two people are shot (minimally described) and it is mentioned a family member has died in battle. Other deaths in war, storms, and past hate crimes are part of the story but not described. Louisa and her family experience racial prejudice. Two mothers are threatened with children being taken from them, it happens to one of them.

“That’s the best way, I think, to handle what life throws at us. Grab hold of it. Make whatever we can with whatever pieces we have.”
I was so moved by this story- about people who face difficulty and hardship with bravery, love and hope in the One who is best at making beauty from ashes. The author weaves two timelines in such a beautiful way, with characters that will stay with me long after I close the pages.
If you are a fan of historical fiction, I can’t recommend you checking this one out enough!

In Yesterday’s Tides, Roseanna M. White jumps between World War I and World War II to tell a sweeping story of faith and family. I loved how White explored both of these conflicts from a different location than normal: Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. Through this location she was able to explore themes of race, class, and more in a way that was both thoughtful and thought provoking. As with every one of her books, White has clearly done her research which is evident in the depth and texture of the story. I loved the characters in this book with Evie, Sterling, Remington, and Louisa capturing my heart and interest as I read about their individual struggles and stories. I also enjoyed the references to characters from other books by White. While it took me a minute to find my footing in this story because of the multiple timelines and narrators, in the end it all came together in a wonderful story that was well worth reading.

Yesterday’s Tides by Roseanna M. White is an exceptional work in historical fiction/romance. Spanning two generations, two world wars, and the Atlantic Ocean, this dual-timeline story will immediately grab your attention. I always love the mystery between timelines in stories like this, and in Yesterday’s Tides I was completely obsessed with knowing how Louisa and Rem’s story from the WWI era would blend into Evie and Sterling’s WWII era story. The history surrounding the U-boats off the east coast of the United States is fascinating. Ocracoke Island is charming and inviting, a perfect setting for holding secrets. And the romance is genuine and swoon-worthy. I fell in love with the strong women in this story who battled through prejudice, injustice, and persecution with strength, grace, and faith. The spiritual wisdom and maturity of these ladies inspired me and challenged me in my own walk of faith–a mark of a great Christian fiction novel in my eyes.
There are many references to Roseanna’s other books in Yesterday’s Tides, but I haven’t read them all and never felt out of place. Historical romance lovers will want this at the top of their TBR stack.
